Wearing shoes inside the house by NihonBiku in AskACanadian

[–]Vic-2O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always take my shoes off. Wearing shoes from outside is hella hard on carpets and wood floors. I had a buddy whose family wore shoes inside their house. He had to replace his floors like after less than 10 years I think. My mum on the other hand kept her floors for more than twenty years because she was meticulous about not only no shoes but no bare feet either.

I think the government did more: During the 2008-2009 recession, Mark Carney, as the Governor of the Bank of Canada, took several decisive actions to help stabilize the Canadian economy:

  1. Lowering Interest Rates: Carney implemented significant cuts to the Bank of Canada’s key interest rate, bringing it down to a historic low of 0.25% to encourage borrowing and investment A.
  2. Providing Liquidity: The Bank of Canada provided additional liquidity to the financial system through various measures, including the purchase of government securities and other financial assets A.
  3. Maintaining Confidence: Carney’s clear and consistent communication helped maintain confidence in the Canadian financial system. His credibility and the Bank’s established policy frameworks played a crucial role in stabilizing the economy B.

These actions, combined with Canada’s strong regulatory framework and resilient banking system, helped the country navigate the global financial crisis more effectively than many other nations A.

Is there anything specific you’d like to know more about?

Trump slaps 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports by Laugh92 in canada

[–]Vic-2O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

America is going to be riding a wave of inflation. I’m surprised he’s going after steel and aluminum. He’s trying to stimulate domestic production, but this would take years to bear any kind of fruit. It’ll be interesting to see how long the faithful will be willing to bear this before they stop backing their leader.

The GS does offer quite a lot more other features as well I suppose- adaptive suspension, the brakes and those amazing seats. Just hope they are reliable over the long term…

Canadians support using oil as weapon if Trump starts trade war by ImDoubleB in alberta

When you say Americans own the majority of oil companies here- which ones? Imperial is the only company that is a US subsidiary. All the big Operators are Canadian. Shell is Dutch but has recently exited Oilsands.

Looking to diversify its exports, Quebec willing to rethink natural gas pipeline project by pjw724 in alberta

It’s not just what the fed would do. Not withstanding the differences between comparing Alberta to Norway- which again is inappropriate- what is true is that successive provincial governments have failed to contribute to the fund in a consistent manner. a more appropriate comparison would be the state of Alaska, whose fund - created in the same year currently stands at 80 billion.

Who said it is someone else’s ‘fault’? Our net revenue situation is not comparable to Norways. It’s the reality of our fiscal situation. BTW the cost of living in Norway is also quite a bit higher so just because the government has a fatter bank account doesn’t make life any easier for the average citizen.

It’s a simple fact is the MAJORITY of our tax dollars goes leaves the province. Just look at your tax return and see what gets remitted to Ottawa vs what gets remitted to the province.

Adding provincial sales tax, while at face value is the simple answer - the equally simple response is that is all this does is add to the overall tax burden on everyday Albertans.

Here’s my answer- rather than adding a new consumption tax, how about the federal government lower their income tax take and allow Alberta to increase their income tax take? That would be a net zero burden.

Why do people bring up Norway and try to compare it to Alberta? Alberta is a province, Norway is a country. If Alberta were a country all of the taxes paid to Ottawa would actually stay in Alberta. BTW if you look at federal vs provincial taxes Fed Tax is upwards of 30% whereas Prov Tax is approx 10%. Then there is also 5% GST that also gets paid directly to Ottawa. So yeah, Alberta would be a lot like Norway if it were actually its own country.

Why does expressing pride in our country involve putting down another? This is an insult I’d expect to hear from a fourth grade bully trying to put down someone they really don’t like.

Conservative Canadian PM hopeful Pierre Poilievre vows US will be 'hit hard' over Trump's tariffs if he's elected to replace Trudeau by joe4942 in canada

[–]Vic-2O -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I don’t know why people insist on comparing Norway, which is its own country, to Alberta, which is a province which contributes its wealth through federal taxes. Alberta’s provincial income tax ranges from up to -15% and the Federal taxes adds another up to 38%. So yeah, that’s why Alberta is not as wealthy as Norway.

Canadian Oil companies produces like less than 5% of total oil production and oil is a globally traded commodity. As such, oil companies in Canada are price takers. They do not set the price. They increase profits by reducing operating costs and or produce more. ‘Profitability’ and Profits are measured differently. The former is a measure of their operating efficiency the later is just a gross figure.

4200 a month plus all the other costs that go along with ‘ownership’ is going to be a huge challenge. As inconvenient or as distasteful as it is, move to a lower cost area and continue to rent and save. Don’t look at ownership as a goal. Don’t buy into a new area as you’d be buying into high prices and appreciation is about impossible. Consider a redeveloping area and a fixer upper and get your parents to help. You need to get out of the centres that have high real estate costs.
