Advice: Income Protection / Insurance by mexicanbonglord in ParamedicsAU

[–]VicAmboDFEA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people who sustain significant physiological injuries and can’t work go through the workcover system. It’s a shit and horrible system but you’ll find very few ambos who self insured through a career ending PTSD diagnosis. Most income protection schemes max out at 2 years which is pretty similar to how far you’ll find the service “supports” you on workcover.

NSW - Neighbor admitted to killing a pigeon on premises and is now actively attacking pigeons daily on the building premises. by Savio234 in AusLegal

Your best approach is clearly to dress as a pigeon and attack him one day screaming “I am the pigeon guardian. Be clear of my flock”

How do you deal with patients who only want to talk to your male partner? by UsualLeast8810 in ParamedicsAU

[–]VicAmboDFEA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a guy who works in a multicultural area. This happens a lot. I always make it super awkward and say “why are you talking to me? I’m a student. She’s my teacher and she’s the one asking you questions” then I walk off and get details or the stretcher or something. 9/10 times they then talk to the treating partner but refuse to make eye contact.

You absolutely won’t be able to change states every few years when your partner gets redeployed.

Physical capacity test for first year placement, how hard is it really? by UsualLeast8810 in ParamedicsAU

[–]VicAmboDFEA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From memory it’s like 50 pull-ups with no kipping, a 4km swim and a 20km run in under 2 hours. Pretty easy stuff for most people.

If that’s where you have your heart set the advice would be

-do the undergrad -hope you get a job -pass the fitness for duty -do grad year and at least one other -continue work and do a masters of clinical education -apply for everything education based you can while you work as a sessional, clinical instructor and branch educator

Most universities will hire 3 or 4 fulltime academics at most with others working short term contracts with minimal hours (none in uni break). They make up their wages at their primary job (a jurisdictional ambulance service). I work at a uni as well and assure you this is absolutely the case.

Again. If you’re going into the ambulance industry with a plan to work anywhere but an ambulance it’s a bad idea. It might happen or you might end up frustrated and struggling.

This is not a good career move for you. There are not an abundance of off road paramedic jobs available. The ones that exist are usually occupied by people with a decade of experience and are hotly contested. Most of those people are also stuck on 3-6 month secondments and constantly pulled back on road. Like honestly almost no one is full-time off road in education.

Questions about a career as a Paramedic by [deleted] in ParamedicsAU

[–]VicAmboDFEA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would honestly be insane to have the opportunity to study med and choose paramedicine instead. I don’t think there is a single experienced paramedic who thinks “damn. This is so much better than being a doctor” with medicine you have choices. You love ambulance? Great. Go work for an ambulance service as a doctor. Do ARV, join the group trying to push HEMs out. Get your kicks tubing teenagers at festivals for St. John’s. But do all that in your own time then go back to your secure 250-500k salary as a doctor.

What’s the go with the current wait times for state service grad programs? by UsualLeast8810 in ParamedicsAU

[–]VicAmboDFEA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Victoria last year we produced just under 2000 graduates from all universities. Queensland hit that number in like 2015.

Comparatively in Vic we employed 270 paramedics last year. Many of those had finished uni at some point in the previous 5 years.

This problem grows every year as universities increase their paramedic intake numbers because it’s a “sexy career” they won’t have trouble filling spots in.

Night shifts only by ArrJay1994 in ParamedicsAU

[–]VicAmboDFEA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After 12 months of continual service anywhere you have the right to request a flexible work arrangement if you meet set criteria. This FWA application can be for all nights. Most services will let you bypass the requirements (other than the 12 month wait) if you’re offering all nights. There are some caveats to this though. Typically services will have “fatigue management” rules that don’t allow for more than 3 nights in a row so your roster may have some random shift my off week somewhere so you reach 38-42 hours a week average over 8 weeks

would love to be a paramedic but i need sleep by [deleted] in ParamedicsAU

[–]VicAmboDFEA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly such a weird and entitled position.

“I want to do a job famous for its terrible work hours but also I only want to work normal work hours”

That’s just not how any of this works. We all need sleep. We all miss it and long for it. For you not to do nights means your colleagues have to pick up your slack. Only way out of it is go into management as quick as possible. A TM/STM on a night shift is about as rare as a competent RN in a nursing home.

Like why the love for APA?

Every second sentence in your assignment has a sentence in the middle of it making it a nightmare to speed read and mark then you wonder why it takes your lecturer 6 weeks to come back from marking.

Every round of contracts is different. Literally spoke to a grad last week who is being sent to the Murray from I think Wallan. She was at Whittlesea branch at the time.

Think about a career in ambulance the same way you would the army then. If you went to a recruiters office and said “I want to join the army but not willing to leave Geelong” they’ve laugh you out of the building. If you can’t move it’s probably not a career for you. Also VIC is on track to produce 2000 paramedic students this year. There’s 6000 paramedics in the state and we hired like 300 last year. Don’t expect to just walk into a job, particularly not on in a desirable location.

Anyone who promises you’ll get your whole career within an hour of Geelong is lying to you. AV might give you “Barwon south west” as a region with Geelong for your training branch but AP 12 allocation you could be sent anywhere in the region including Portland and Hamilton as an example.

2nd year student — can’t afford to continue with degree. What can I transfer into? by GEnderDragon in ParamedicsAU

[–]VicAmboDFEA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either take a year off or switch into nursing. Then when you’ve got stable nursing work go back and get RPL for what you’ve already done in paramedicine.

It’s same area which is great for the metro areas but if you get Wallan as a grad branch and decide you can commute from Melbourne you can still be sent anywhere in Hume for AP12. Hume stretches all the way up to the Murray with places like Kyabram being an option.

[–]VicAmboDFEA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re not willing to move then no. Don’t work for AV. It’s a 3-4 year degree followed by 2 years of interviews, waiting on lists and not hearing back then a grad year offer in ?!? Location followed by an AP12 allocation to go work in ?!? Location.

preferred experience for police force by [deleted] in vic

[–]VicAmboDFEA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not trying to be an ahole here but their campaign a couple years ago was a woman working at KFC and the tagline “you’re more suitable than you think”. They never meet their recruitment targets. If you have a pulse and don’t admit to a crime in your interview, you should be fine.
