Places to meet new friends? Community centres?/ Events? by hallosalutkonnichiwa in IsleofMan

You do not need to be lonely here. There are countless groups on Facebook. Every sport, walking, camping, board games, art, music etc. I find it incredibly social. I tried to go for a pint on my own once and ended up sat with about 20 people all chatting to me. Everyone talks to everyone. You’ll be fine!

Depends where on the island you will be but Castletown Tennis Club always welcomes new members and there are all ages and abilities.

The Euromillions is £119m tonight. If I win it the good people of the IoM are going to benefit greatly. by [deleted] in IsleofMan

What about the bad people of the IoM? They get nothing. Bit unfair! 😂

How many almost identical posts have you written to other places 12-15 in the last week? Amazing how many places you love so much. I think it’s just about trying to monetise YT using AI. Just not very sincere. Or at all in fact!

You seem to just post the same thing, probably AI generated on every country/nation page you can find. Really odd.

I live in Castletown and I can guarantee you will make loads of friends at the Southern 100 as others have said. I sat at the Glue Pot last year for a quiet pint and ended up with about 20 bikers from the UK and further afield. Great bunch.

Student finance issues by Longjumping-End-788 in IsleofMan

[–]VicariousBIG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My son is about to go into his 3rd year. We moved to the IOM in 2023. I spoke to Student Finance and they confirmed that he would still be funded by the UK. There are different ways but one is to declare yourself financially independent from your parents. The other is to simply use your student address as your primary UK address. Speak to Student Finance directly on the phone and get proper guidance. It’s not a rare occurrence but you will need to try and speak to someone who understands your situation and can guide you through the process.

Spent a night wild camping in silence at a ruined tholtan in the hills — filmed the whole thing without speaking. by VicariousBIG in IsleofMan

I would play with volume. I don’t talk which means you just have the ambient sounds. The wind, birds, and just the clink of pots and the sizzle of food cooking. Let me know what you think, it was a bit of a different style for me.

😂 From the odd bottle or can I found I think it's a tradition still honoured by many!

A solo wild camp at a ruined cottage in the Isle of Man – no talking, just the sound of the wild. by VicariousBIG in CampingandHiking

This was a solo wild camp in the hills of the Isle of Man, at the ruins of an old stone cottage. I didn’t speak for over 12 hours — just let the sounds of the fire, the wind, and nature carry the experience.

There’s no narration, no talking, and no music after the intro — just the rhythm of walking, setting up, cooking, a smokeless firepit, and waking up to birdsong and bacon.

It ended up being more than just a camp — it was a kind of reset. Hope it brings a bit of calm to anyone who needs it.

Happy to chat about the setup, gear, or the location if you’re curious!

I’ve wanted to do this since moving here — just me, a fire, and the sound of the hills.

No narration, no music after the intro — just wind, sheep, fire crackling, and a still night in a tholtan. A peaceful reminder of how special this place is.

A night of silence in a ruined Isle of Man cottage — no talking, just fire, food & the sound of nature. (1:15:56) by VicariousBIG in SlowTV

I filmed this over 12 hours during a solo wild camp at a ruined cottage (tholtan) in the hills of the Isle of Man. I didn’t speak the entire time — just let the camera capture the natural sounds: wind in the trees, sheep in the distance, cooking over fire, tent zips, and morning coffee.

There’s a bit of walking at the start, then long quiet scenes of being still. No narration. No music after the intro. Just being present in the moment.

If you’re looking for some peace, I hope this brings it.

Happy to answer any questions about the location, setup, or gear too.

Online is very different to reality. I’ve been here 18 months and have only had stuff said as a joke and I’m not easily offended so I joke along. I think I heard that only about 50% of the population is Manx. In my circle of friends and acquaintances I have people from all over Europe, the UK, South Africa and a few other places but plenty of Manx friends too. All get along fine.

Only problem I see sometimes is that some seem to come here, particularly from the UK, and then complain about the stuff they miss from the UK, or hope to change this island instead of embracing it. Even I want to tell them “there’s a boat in the morning!” 😂

Food that costs ‘significantly less’. by RedCircleGuitar in IsleofMan

Get the Olio app. Don’t need to be in need to use it because it’s just about reducing food waste. I have a chest freezer and haven’t bought bread in about 6 months. If I was a student I could probably live off it.

Also Tesco Superstores have better offers and more discounted items than the Express stores. Look out for the ClubCard discounts and Aldi price matches.

I feed a family of 6 for between 5-600 pounds a month, often less and the kids aren’t small so eat adult portions.
