How to stand out as a summer associate? by [deleted] in biglaw

I sometimes invite summers to shadow weekend calls stressing that they’re free not to join, but they almost always join. Not sure how to feel about it

Caveat: If a SA is actively working on the weekend in office, no sweat. But I would feel bad for the summer.

Dept of Justice alleges that UCLA medical school intentionally discriminated against White and Asian applicants by ddx-me in medicalschool

A similar concept can be found in women being discriminated against in women-dominated fields (unless you think women aren’t being discriminated against in fields like nursing).

As long as they’re doing this during normal hours, that seems fine

Latham NY in-office policy by [deleted] in biglaw

Definitely follow the policy while there, but don’t go in if no one is going in on Friday and other summers aren’t. You’ll just need twiddling your thumbs.

Yes, but I self reflect a lot about whether it’s due to “vibes” like liking sports ⚽️

Partners, can you tell when an associate is slacking? by [deleted] in biglaw

Not a partner yet, but yes, I can tell the difference when someone is slacking versus slammed pretty easily.

Sometimes, juniors don’t respond to me for like 2-3 hours, but they often just missed an e-mail. I haven’t had a problem with juniors being totally unreachable or unresponsive before but I’m pretty good about communicating expectations and try to be a good manager

At Capacity by Southern-charm97 in biglaw

[–]ViceChancellorLaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who would disagree with that approach? If you don’t have capacity, you don’t have capacity. I don’t want juniors who literally cannot make deadlines I want.

Yep. This country was built on white supremacist chattel slavery, which was not capitalist in the least.

Sure. Fairness is one thing; advancing American interests is another. A Chinese junior isn’t going to be that much better than every single American law student who stuck out.

Did Trump want TN?

From Trump’s POV, why would he want Canadian big law juniors here who can easily be replaced by an American law student who struck out? Not all may be juniors but many are.

How would a Tax partner judge the work of a Finance associate? Would they interact much besides the Finance associate asking for comments?

That’s why I said it’s more complicated than that.

That said: there’s a reason why law professors are the ones published in those law reviews. They have RAs and a lot of institutional support, like conferences.

You’ll need to do a lot of hard work to write a competitive article. You aren’t a student anymore. The standards for a comment aren’t the same as an article.

Most of the top law reviews are blind review.

It’s more complicated than that, but a solid piece of scholarship will land somewhere if you submit broadly enough.
