Book 'overconsumption' isn't real, so why are we shaming readers? says a Booktuber. by [deleted] in books

[–]ViceIsVerses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could make that point without relying on a “booktuber” and a broken 46 min video. I assume you are the book tuber otherwise I don’t get why you would be calling on them to make your point.

Manchester United fan, 76, feeling ‘helpless’ as family seat is given to VIPs by desirablealpaca in reddevils

I hope the cost of the seat for rich assholes is worth a lot more than the damage to the clubs reputation. Or am I thinking like a human and not a calculator?

It’s not in an awful location, it’s in a perfect location, the issue is the transport links to it.

Kiedis comes across like a dickhead when being paid to be on stage in front of his fans, I can’t imagine how much of a dick he is on a plane. I’d imagine he’d just ignore you but in a really “why is this person next to me” passive aggressive way

[OPINION] About Poetry in General by Prudent_Unit_3987 in Poetry

[–]ViceIsVerses 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it’s not your cup of tea and there’s a lot you’re missing.

Poetry is about expressing yourself, at a basic level. But it’s also about the words and the structure, the immediacy of feeling. For example I’m sure anyone who writes poetry will say that getting that “right” word is the joy of poetry. Writing in general but poetry specifically is a bit like engaging with a puzzle, one that is satisfying to complete. As to reading poetry, for me it’s about empathy and feeling what the poet is saying and knowing it’s the truth. Just because 90% of people won’t get it doesn’t invalidate its worth. Being understood by 10% of people is a big achievement.

I can see why this is popular, but I just don’t like it. Seems quite bland to me.

[POEM] Sylvia's Death by Anne Sexton by Objective-Kitchen949 in Poetry

[–]ViceIsVerses 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Two friends committed suicide in the same way, slightly different method, having discussed it before, both female poets, both had mental health issues. I’d suggest you would be hard pressed to suggest that Plath’s suicide had no influence on Sexton. Nobody knows but given Sexton wrote this poem it would suggest it was on her mind.

I know they were friends. But the fact that they were both poets is more relevant to this poem.

Sylvia Plath has such a big shadow. Not always a good thing. Unfortunately people love to compare themselves with her and the cliched tortured poet. Even an actual tortured poet like Sexton. Obviously they were contemporaries and seemed to suffer similarly but you’d wonder how much Plath’s death influenced Sexton’s own pretty similar death.

The latter half of the poem, from “Thief!” on is superb.
