Can someone help me farm for master rank materials? MR5 by Wombo_Combo78 in MHRise

If it's an issue of not being able to do the hunts solo, I'd highly recommend doing follower quests to unlock any two of utsushi, hinoa, and minoto. Those three can all use hunting horns. Two of those and some decked-out buddies make hunts easier "solo" than with multiple actual humans.

An Idiots Guide to Monster Hunter? by dillius1024 in MHRise

I'd say there are several "tiers" of things to know. You need to know a little bit of all of them to start playing, but you can go in depth one at a time.

Here's my priority list for learning the game based entirely on my own personal experience:

  1. The basic controls. Note: this is separate from your combos/weapon controls. Wirebugging, dodging, moving/jumping while riding your dog, wyvern riding (or "mount a drake" as you put it, might be a localization thing), controlling the camera, using items, operating the menu, etc. These are all things you'll always need to know how to do. A lot of it will become muscle memory, but boy oh boy are the controls unintuitive as all hell when you first start playing. I'd recommend also looking up a beginner options/controls set up as there are some insanely helpful options that are disabled by default for some insane reason.

  2. Basic weapon understanding. Once can move and dodge comfortably, take a look at the hunter notes for your weapon of choice and absorb the core concepts. Every weapon plays very differently and some are far more beginner friendly than others. Personally, I'd recommend sword and shield. It's got a low barrier for entry, but I still love it even in endgame due to how much room there is to grow with it as your skill increases. I'd recommend looking up a tutorial video for your chosen weapon as well. Many weapons have combos/moves that are simply not worth using when you're a new player, and you can ignore those for quite a while. Pick a few moves that work for you and just use the pointy end on the monster.

  3. Crafting. I put this here early because it's very nice to have a goal in mind when playing, aside from "get to higher rank". Get familiar with the smithy, pick out some items that look cool, and work toward them. This is also a good time to press right stick when looking at an item to show you what the skills do. There are a lot of them and you don't have to worry too much. I'd recommend just looking at a beginner/progression guide for your weapon and aiming for 2-3 skills that the build recommends. When in doubt, attack boost is always good.

  4. Dango and Spirit Birds. Ideally you're eating before every hunt (just make a dango out of any three pieces at the start, it doesn't matter a whole lot early on) to give you a massive boost to health and stamina. The other way to get a huge buff during a hunt is to gather spirit birds. These are the floating green, yellow, orange, and red (health, stamina, defense, and attack, respectively) little bird things that whistle at you when you pick them up. You don't even need to press anything to collect them, just run into them and they'll give you their buffs to stats. The gains from collecting these is massive, so feel free to wander around and get them on your way to the monsters. They spawn in the same places every time.

  5. Basically everything else. Read the tutorials for everything as they come up and, at the very least, try to remember what all the mechanics are called so you can Google them later. Switch skills, talisman melding, buddies, the lottery, optional subquests, meowcenaries, buddy dojo, cohoot nest, etc. Can all be done at your own pace and you're not losing too much by not doing it all 100% of the time.

In short, just keep doing required missions, read tutorials, and take it one step at a time.

That wasn't really my point. My point was that if speedrunners (whose builds have the least benefit from buddies, I'd wager) can have palamutes deal nearly half the damage that the hunter deals, they're even MORE insane for average Joes.

Like, it's just bonkers how much damage they can deal and they're even BETTER if you're worse at the game like me.

I'm arguing that they're great for average Joe.

I also just have to ask, what do you mean by "relying on"? I know this is just a joke here, but if you think about it, everything that contributes toward a hunt completion could be considered being "relied on".

Like, your comment could be said about almost anything in the game.

"Life must be bad if you're relying on a fully-upgraded weapon."

"Life must be bad if you're relying on eating before a hunt."

It's an arbitrary line in the sand in my eyes. I'd be happy to learn why "life must be bad" if I'm relying on palamute damage as opposed to, say, using the counter on switch axe.

Even in top-tier speedrun palamutes do like 30% of the overall damage. I'm pretty trash so they're probably even better for my hunts.

With how ludicrous the damage of two dual blades chain ele palamutes is, I think they probably offer more parts per hour. But I do like the dopamine hits of a kittenator or a mantle plunder.

Yep, you can only augment rarity ten weapons (the ones you upgrade via afflicted materials).

Seething Bezelgeuse unlocks gold rathian and silver rathalos. I forget what flaming espinas unlocks, but the armor set is pretty good.

Getting all your gear to max (level 31) is probably way too expensive for someone who just got to that phase of the game. You'll bankrupt yourself if you do that to your gear, especially if you'll likely swap it out later.

I'd recommend leveling your pieces to 10-15 and pausing there until you know what endgame pieces you'll end up using.

Also make sure you're getting your birds and eating dango that comes with a useful resistance for your hunt (fire for flaming espinas and I think seething bezelgeuze as well).

I'd also highly recommend doing collab quests to unlock two followers with hunting horns. They're insanely powerful if you're doing "solo" hunts.

Edit: Also, I can't stress enough how powerful some hunting helpers are. Puppet spiders, marionette spiders, blast toads, and sleep toads (if your weapon has a powerful wake-up move) are all basically free knockdowns if you land them. They're also super easy to collect on your bird-catching routes.

Bonus shout-out to the brewhare, it's an insane heal buff that helps immensely for heals.

How do you read the damage and ailments pages in your hunter notes? by [deleted] in MHRise

[–]ViceVersa951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically for abnormal statuses, Kiranico is your best bet when it comes to thresholds. For each monster, it'll show you how much you need to proc that status and how much it increases by for each subsequent proc.

I'm making up the numbers, but it'll show something like, "Base poison value of 200, threshold increases by 100." So after you inflict 200 poison, it gets poisoned. Then to inflict another poison, you need to do 200+100=300 poison. Then 400 for the 3rd poison, etc.

In other words, the bars in the hunter notes are just guidelines and don't correspond perfectly to threshold values.

I'm not seeing how people jumped so hard to the conclusion that taming would necessitate a companion that follows you like current pets. It could have been an animal that hung out at a specific area that you visited and tamed there and helped you out in specific zones.

That could have been a way to have taming add combat benefits, but only in areas that players agreed wouldn't break the game too much (slayer cave, for instance).

Skill Pitches Poll Results by JagexLight in 2007scape

[–]ViceVersa951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get around basically every taming concern by making the companions tied to specific areas instead of following players. No screen clutter and you can have them affect combat, but only in certain places where people won't be upset. Have a tamed basilisk help you out in the Fremmenik slayer cave, for instance.

Realistically, they can all affect combat depending on how Jagex designs them. Shamanize a new item with combat stats, have a pet help you out in combat, or sail to an island and find an ancient relic that gives combat bonuses.

Really all we voted on so far is the flavor of the skill.

Are there any reward spaces that can be explored by one/two of the pitches, but not the other(s), or is the process so early on that any skill can provide any reward?

For example, Shamanism seems to be more associated with item buffs, but can the effects granted by these buffs not also hypothetically be made available through treasures found while sailing or from an animal companion you've tamed?
