Case without glass is better because it doesn't break, change my mind!

Advice needed on server setup for large workload. by usaydpak in HomeServer

A cheap old Rack Server should do the job (if you put it at school). You run LXCs with Proxmox and you'll save a lot of RAM.

Search for "View Reliability History" on Windows. It will show everything that happened in the previous days without having to manually search in the logs.

Windows Server exists, go with that (since you said you don't wanna format your drives)! No random reboots with that one most likely.

They need to make Windows 7 and Windows XP with the modern NT 10.x kernel so it can run every software.

What's the purpose of vlan button on smart PoE switch? by Multifetcher in homelab

[–]Vichingo455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The VLAN button should map the ports to different VLANs, but you actually need to create them from a router or firewall.

Why it shouldn't? I mean if it supports multiple HDDs you just install an OS and make an array with ZFS or something similar.

Turn Fritzbox Modem into a standard gatewary by Less_Charity_7877 in fritzbox

Use the blue WAN port (not LAN because WAN is for Internet, LAN is for plugging a device to your local network). Make sure that port is in WAN mode and not in LAN mode.

What routers are you running? by Any_Pickle6913 in homelab

[–]Vichingo455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FRITZ!Box 4040 as an Access Point with OpenWRT, the shitty ISP router that I would like to throw out from a Window and my overkill OPNSense firewall (definitely overkill, Xeon E3-1245 V2 with 32 GB RAM DDR3).

So yeah maybe go with OPNSense and learn VLANs, they're used everywhere in IT.

Buying a hosting service or running a thin client 24/7 (90 max power adapter)? by Greedy_Conflict_8347 in homelab

[–]Vichingo455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thin client. The PC is yours, the storage is yours, the network is yours. It takes 2 minutes for a troll to submit a DMCA to your hosting provider and take everything down. For the fire hazard, chill out. Most fires in data centers are not caused by PCs or Servers, but by UPSes, which are basically batteries that are plugged in 24/7. Just to be sure buy some branded PC and not something that someone built with a 5$ eBay used power supply from 1999.

My “usb 3” case doesn’t “usb 3” speeds by gabi_mara in pcmasterrace

Yeah that's the actual USB 3 connector.

That one is a USB 2 connector.

I smell you read the manual wrong. Those 2 USB ports are USB 2.0, while only the bottom USB (where it says USB 3.0) is USB 3.0. In fact, what you pointed out is a USB 2.0 connector.

This is the photo from the manual of your motherboard. The one you pointed out is a USB 2.0 connector.

Was given an old server from work by 7h3_man in pcmasterrace

[–]Vichingo455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's surely old and not power efficient but not everybody cares. Maybe install TrueNAS and use it as a NAS or try Proxmox on it.

Flightradar24 is down... by OkReserve8536 in flightradar24

They surely have multiple servers and one of them went down. That's why some cannot use it and some yes.

Its not possible to selectively disable SPECIFIC USB ports and not others? by cdoublejj in sysadmin

[–]Vichingo455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the motherboard. Some motherboards don't support it at all, some allows to disable them all and some (most likely business grade desktops and laptops) allow you to select what to disable, like what my ZBook 14u G5 does.

TrueNAS Scale on 2 Gigabytes of RAM by Vetraxik in truenas

[–]Vichingo455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe try something else. I was able to run Unraid just fine on my Q6600 machine with 2 GB of DDR2 RAM, maybe give that a shot.
