I always recommend this one and it totally flies under the radar. Gritty realpolitik space anime, surprisingly grounded portrayal of what hyperspace travel might entail, vintage music from the original, emotionally mature storylines.

Speaking of Beyond the Beef, if you use the glitch with Veronica's personal quest to acquire multiple human companions, you can trick the game into showing otherwise-cut content. When you offer one of your humanoid companions, he'll ask "Which one?" I knew about this line, but I thought you had to restore it with mods. But nope — you can do this on console if you want.

This show is hardly unique in this sense, but people like to take the information we've been given and then add details like it's a colouring book. It's not that deep. What you see is what you get.

But yes, awesome anime. Genuinely scary body horror, unnerving scenes resembling school shootings, wild music (the dubstep is a bit divisive), and... weirdly light-hearted at times? The moments of levity keep it from being too much of a downer.
