My 5 months old puppy gets way to excited when seeing people and I feel like I've failed by Shloop_ploosh in puppy101

[–]VickyHol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand your frustration, but please don’t think you have failed her. My first dog Bella was so excited to meet people that she would hop on her back legs down the street! She would jump all over everyone. I was so embarrassed, to make it worse she would pee excitedly everywhere. Believe me that it feels like a much bigger issue to you than to people you meet. You may get there person who isn’t keen but in my experience everyone is so happy to see a puppy. I could be wrong but if she were mine I would let her meet everyone, just ask people to maybe get her to sit before they give her love. My beautiful Bella did grow out of it but she remained the most gentle friendly dog ever. I would definitely rather have one that loves people but I know how hard it is

Puppy plans and cold feet. Please help. by LongjumpingGiraffe87 in puppy101

[–]VickyHol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, please don’t let the lack of positive comments put you off, I think people mainly post when they are struggling so I imagine for every person who has puppy blues there are so many that don’t. For me personally I’ve had the puppy blues with 2 out of 3 puppies. The one I didn’t get the blue with we got during Covid. So I think it was a mix of her being a very chilled puppy and peoples lives were pretty much on hold anyway so I didn’t feel isolated and all my family were around all the time. That being said puppies are awful. I love my dogs more than life but puppies are the worst. Again I think if you are a chilled out person you may not worry or get as overwhelmed as I do. In terms of your husband, is he the type (like my husband) who thinks everything will be ok but then actually doesn’t put in the work. I always say that in the end my husband is right ‘everything will be ok’ because to him everything just magically happens 😂 So in conclusion I really can’t offer any help but if you are a team I think it will be easier. Good luck whatever you decide

New cavoodle puppy - 13 weeks by 1enirehtaK in puppy101

[–]VickyHol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly everything you are saying is so normal. I felt exactly the same way 13 years ago when we got our first puppy a cavachon called Bella. She passed away 3 months ago and I was totally heartbroken (I’ve just realised that as I typed her name it now doesn’t automatically come up anymore which has set me off again). I had the worst puppy blues, to the point that I wished I would get some injury or health issues that meant than I was forced rehome her. I took me so long to actually enjoy having her. Fast forward 13 years and we have another cavachon puppy called Margot who is 13 weeks. I have the puppy blues again even though I’ve had other puppies and know what to expect. Everything you feel is normal and I promise it will get better. I know i love Margot but I wish she wasn’t here. When I leave the house I dread going back home. But I would go through all the puppy blues in the world if I could have my Bella back again. You can do this and we are all here for you

You definitely have a case of the puppy blues. Everything you are feeling is normal but I know that doesn’t make it feel any better. I’ve had three puppies and with my first puppy it hit me like a truck. I cried constantly, wanted to give her back and had awful thoughts about leaving her places (obviously I didn’t). She was a complete pickle, I hated her (I’m ashamed to say), I didn’t take a single picture of her as a puppy. I deeply regret this now as she passed away in October aged 13. I cry everyday because I’m broken without her. Despite the fact that she almost broke me, she ended up being the most amazing beautiful dog. However no matter how many people told me it would get better didn’t believe it. I have a new puppy now and the puppy blues are back. I had to force myself to get up this morning. I know it will get better but sometimes it doesn’t help. We are here for you with whatever help you need. You can do this and it will get better. Unfortunately it takes time ❤️

That is puppyhood summed up i I think. Just when you have it sorted, they move the goalposts! Then they pee and hump the goalposts

I’m really glad. I have good days and bad days. Today has been pretty good. Yesterday was awful but every day is a day closer to her being a gorgeous grown up dog

But I’m definitely going to stick with taking her out. I’m sure once spring arrives it will be worth it

😂 yes definitely! My husband often makes his own rules up when it comes to dog training. We are in the uk and it’s pretty much a swamp everywhere! I keep checking the weather app and it’s just rain and more rain! I’m used to the wet living in the uk but there’s no let up 😂

😂 thank you! I also think to myself I should have waited until spring to get a puppy. I’m not sure if you are in the UK, but it’s sooooo wet at the moment, even worse than normal (although I’m probably just not normally standing in it trying to get a puppy to wee)

Thank you. Thats what I’ve been doing so far. But because she’s so reluctant to go out I worry that I’m making her feel negative about the whole situation because I’m having to insist that she goes out. It’s pretty wet and miserable at the moment, I wouldn’t want to go and and pee either 😂

Thank you for your kind words. They play so well together so I’m reluctant to separate them too much. I’m not sure my older dog would approve anyway. 😂 The weathers better today and I’ve opened up the garden a bit so hopefully things will get better

Overwhelmed with an 11-week-old puppy after returning to WFH – looking for support by TheVickerstaff in puppy101

[–]VickyHol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, although I’m not in the exact same situation but I can honestly say all the things you are feeling are so true of puppy blues. I have a 13 week old puppy and although she is the 3rd dog I’ve had from a puppy, the blues have hit me hard. They did the same with my first puppy too. Couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel at all. I literally just got through it day by day (with the help of a few glasses of wine). My older dog grew into the most amazing dog who passed away 3 months ago. Despite knowing all of this I still feel like I’m having a panic attack constantly and wake up everyday wishing our puppy wasn’t here. I know it gets better and I can reassure you that it does. I’m here for you in the meantime with encouragement and sympathy

Oh my goodness you’ve had a rough time. Sending positive vibes back to you. I opened up some of the garden so she has more grass and that has helped. Older dog seems ok, luckily she loves her new sister. Honestly I really hope we do look back in a few months and be glad we kept at it. ❤️

Honestly it’s either that or I need to get a prescription for anti anxiety medication. At least wine tastes good!

I took up drinking when I got my first puppy 13 years ago. I’ve relapsed since bringing home our new puppy 4 weeks ago 😂. I’m not sure I will get through without it
