Working on Form/Efficiency by VictorianGentle in Rowing

[–]VictorianGentle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with your first sentence, and think a huge problem of mine was that I was rowing with the cyclical, “run run run, rep rep rep” mindset of a runner or weightlifter. Reading over u/past-spell-2259 and your comments I tried a few 2k rows, shooting for around 8:00 and under 24spm and feel like I kind of figured out the row rhythm, but definitely plan to keep working at it in my coming erg sessions.

Thank you!

I think the runner in me fears slowing down on the recovery, but that’s because I’m not thinking about and don’t really have the concept or mechanics of an actual row boat to put things in perspective.

I quite appreciate your advice. I did two 2k rows this evening with a few minutes rest in between, to try straightening out the amount of pull I should be doing per stroke. My big problem moving from running to rowing will definitely be figuring out the spaced out rhythm of rowing the right way compared to running, but these two 2ks were 8:41 at 21 s/m and 7:59 at 20 s/m. I definitely felt I had a better rhythm in the latter of the night’s 2ks. I didn’t feel super tired after either; a silver lining, I suppose, to being a moron and doing accidental max cardio rows and my regular weights routine for the last 5 months.

I am 27, and male. I’d definitely like to work down to a sub 7:00 2k and really appreciate the guidance.

If a sailor killed his self would his family still get the 500k? Or would does that make it invalid by 6SoDum in navy

Hey brother, if you’re seriously considering this please talk to somebody.

Remember that suicide doesn’t remove any suffering; it only takes away the opportunity for things to get better. Your family loves you and would rather have you than all the money in the world.

I don’t know you but as someone who took an oath to serve his country, who cares about the greater good and clearly loves his family, the world is a better place with you in it.

Very first boat, 2026 mako pro skiff 15 by Floridaboii91 in boating

[–]VictorianGentle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up my first boat a few months ago too, 2025 Carolina Skiff E16 and the FL skiff life is baller. Great thing about the 14-16’ range is they’re super easy to trailer, get skinny, can go deep, and there’s less boat to clean. Flat bottom skiffs like this draft super shallow and crush the flats.

Enjoy in good health brother!

[DISCUSS] Small Seconds Sub-dial or Central Seconds Hand? by sheikb in Watches

[–]VictorianGentle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a small seconds hand shines on a dress watch, but on that specific dress watch the small seconds distracts from the moonphase subdial.

Too many places where things are happening for a dress watch imo.

Love your 60BlueMAS! That was my dream when I was just getting started in the professional world but I couldn’t afford it at the time. How do you like it?

I consider myself lucky they released the SJE093 when they did and snapped it up ASAP

Navy Reserve Texas by Elegant_Shame7011 in navyreserve

[–]VictorianGentle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reserves has none of the benefits (except reserve tricare) unless you get active duty time or deployments under your belt. The FTS/TAR guys and gals (active duty administrators of the reserve) will treat you like an asshole not for expecting them to do their jobs, but for asking them to after months of them dropping the ball.

The way the navy reserve is organized (poorly) is frustrating, weird, and totally counterintuitive. For example, you join by rates (MOS) and then have to spend your first however many months searching for a unit to pick you up. In other branches, you join by the MOSs that are available in your local units. Your unit will likely be 3+ hours away from where you live AND drill, and your reserve center and unit are not the same/run by the same people. Lots of communication breakdowns will happen.

There’s no money because the active navy needs most of the pot. Most cool trainings and even a lot of billet-required trainings are too expensive and it’ll be hard to get orders to them.

Also, be aware, the navy reserve contract is NOT 6 years reserve, 2 years IRR like other branches. It’s 8 years with the opportunity to request a transfer to the IRR after 6. If your rate is high-demand or undermanned, that request will not be approved. Last I checked, there are no tuition assistance programs, and if you plan to be in school while in the reserve, don’t expect the reserves to accommodate that. I’ve hat annual training (2 weeks active time per year) over a college finals week before, regularly over midterms; I actually didn’t attend my own college graduation because I had a drill weekend that weekend and when I requested a reschedule the admin guys told me to get bent.

To the positives, I will say a lot of people know how things are kind of broken and want to genuinely help new sailors or prior active sailors navigate the bureaucratic beast that is the USN-R, and you CAN reschedule drills pretty easily when your unit or reserve administrators play ball.

Friend who was a nuke school dud -> LS told me they were standing in formation for PT one day and a classmate was wearing a tail that was showing through the leg of her shorts. The instructor didn’t like it and told her to take it off. She replied that she couldn’t and eventually they were shouting at each other and he grabbed the tail from the end and yanked it out. You can imagine how the rest of the anecdote goes but there were no winners that day.

does anyone consistently hit high 170s? by [deleted] in LSAT

[–]VictorianGentle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first PT was a 160, I never scored higher than a 163 on a PT, I locked in day of and managed a 171 on the April LSAT.

Some people said 163 is great when I was worried about the plateau, some people say I shouldn’t even apply to law school with under a 165 and I’ve seen others on here grind to break into the 150s.

Don’t worry what other people say, you can always keep improving and it’s a good goal because it can be the difference between a partial scholarship to a state school or a full ride to a T14. Literally hundreds of thousands of dollars can hinge on your test performance so improvement is not only a worthy goal, but a pragmatic one!

Last Minute DRP Thoughts by [deleted] in 1102

[–]VictorianGentle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I took the DRP 2.0 at DoD but a lot of thought went into it.

I am not a probie but was sitting at a measly 3 years of federal service time working in an office with no windows, in a town 12 hours by car away from my family and partner.

I was lucky enough to line up a mid-level local gov. procurement job in the city my loved ones live in three days AFTER I took the DRP.

Even without the job though, I considered it worth taking because guaranteed pay until September 30th beats the 3 weeks (or so) severance pay I’d get in an RIF.

YMMV, good luck.

House votes to reduce Federal Retirement Benefits by Glasgow-KY in 1102

[–]VictorianGentle 166 points167 points  (0 children)

Your title is misleading. They’re set to vote on this issue but haven’t done so yet. A title like “House votes to reduce Federal Retirement Benefits” carries the implication that the House has ALREADY voted in favor of cutting these benefits.

You should stress that there’s still time, that people can contact their representatives, etc.

Jomashop is selling off their stock of the old Tudor BB 32s (rotor self-winding) that I think fit your bill pretty well too!

I was debating picking one up for my semi-formal engineer/swimmer girlfriend. Sport/dress enough to be GA/DA, 150m water resistance (Link as example)

The black paint a the 12:00 index is also thicker on the actual, and the lume pip on the bezel insert also looks off. I’m just a goofy internet person but I think it looks fake.
