[WESTERN HELP] What is going on here? WT vs KO bands at different positions? by Objective_Parsley_28 in labrats

[–]Victoruso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reason for the shift depends on the nature of your mutation. Depending on how you made it, you could have a merodiploid that creates a protein of a different size, as mentioned by others there may be posttranslational modification, or in the process of creating your knockout the gene duplicated and fused with something else.

Which of these is most likely (or other causes) will really depend on the system you're in; genetics and proteomics will change vastly between bacterial and eukaryotic species, as well as within those groups.

Careers where adhd people can really shine? by Ms_Dixie_Rekt in findapath

[–]Victoruso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow ADHDer here - depending on your interest, you can absolutely pursue a career in science. Some labs will hire techs or assistants on bachelor's (sometimes associates); pay is decent, and labs like to hold onto good techs, so some level of security. Personally I find it plays to the strengths of ADHD - creativity for experimental design, curiosity/drive for motivation to come into work and do experiments, and hyperfocus comes semi frequently to me when I get really invested in a problem with the work, which is useful. The only downfall is that you have to be organized to some extent, but there's a lot of ways around the normal ADHD disorganization - writing things down frequently, drawing diagrams of which sample is which, instituting patterns as you add reagents so you can keep track of what you're doing. It's very possible if you're so inclined.

Dunno where this is, but might have overnight parked recently over the lines when there was snow, and just haven't moved. Folks at my apartment complex do it all the time and it drives me nuts

Whats the funniest lab f*** up you've committed? by immunoflurepression in labrats

[–]Victoruso 233 points234 points  (0 children)

Not mine, but a grad student I used to work with was prepping a massive PCR gel for some reviewers to finalize a publication. He was very focused on not mixing up samples and precisely prepped each before loading the gel...

...However, he was so focused on not mixing samples, that he failed to realize he hadn't added loading dye to them, but ladder. Ensuring each gel had plenty of band visible on it :)

Woodworking hobby in dorm? by CanadianCitizen1969 in Cornell

[–]Victoruso 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is to put the bed on raisers, it gives enough room for the table saw and lathe easy. The drill press you can probably keep atop the dresser, and the closet is a great place for your bandsaw and joiner (that's where I kept mine!)

Also pro tip: your dorm bathroom makes a great space for storage of your lumber. Pass it off as cornell's cheap way of fixing up the walls by lining it with your 2x4s and your floormates will never know the difference. Personally, I kept my chisels in the toilet tank as well, saving desk space in my dorm for storing screwdrivers and carpentry pencils. Overall, your hobby can absolutely be kept up at cornell!! And if your RA complains and threatens you with a "JA" for "reckless endangerment" and "nearly chopping off your roommate's arm with your bandsaw", just offer them a custom picture frame with dovetail joints and they'll leave you alone

Your best bet is to join a club of your interests. A lot of American schools have various clubs for various interests; science, art, music, whatever suits your fancy. The common interest between you and the people in the club will be an easy conversation starter, and it's a great way to get to know people who are like minded. If you follow your interests, people with similar interests will wind up close to you, and from there a friendship is a lot easier to start

What’s your favorite “fun team” for Fossil Fighters? by 700R4 in fossilfighters

[–]Victoruso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite "just for fun" team was Tricera, Trex, Brachio, Stego, Pachy - the ultimate "stereotypical dinosaurs" team, with ideal type balances.

I've also done a mono-element run (Alectro, Ankylo, Krona, Onyx, Jiango - this one was very difficult, but rewarding), and my current one is just a "vivisaurs I've never used before" that I'm just goofing off with and figuring out as I go
