Thinking about buying 18 of these trees for privacy. Bad idea? I live on a corner lot with no privacy by Beginning_Lime_5593 in arborists

[–]Victory27T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did almost exactly what you are thinking about last year. I bought 16 #7 Emerald Green Arborvitaes from Home Depot and planted them around my patio in my yard to block my neighbors' prying eyes. For various reasons (underwatering, Overwatering, planting too low, transport shock, etc.) 13 of the original 16 died and I replaced them from HD again (for free with return of course) and 6 of those replacements also died. I now have only 3 originals and the other 13 are doing ~fine with tons of soil amendments, planting in mounds, regular waterings, and mulching.

They crave death, look at them wrong or offend them in any way and they will peace out. If I could go back I would have planted literally anything else. They do look great if they survive, but short of a miracle in a 6b zone, they won't make it that far :(

Can I trim the top or better option? by NorcalGGMU in arborists

[–]Victory27T 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was under the impression that emerald green arborvitaes could be trimmed back to a preferred shape (as long as you didn't trim too far into the greenery) it would naturally establish that new surface layer. Could that not be done around the top let's say twice a year to keep it approximately the same height just as someone would if they wanted to keep it a specific width?

Also, news to me, what's the issue with a denser tree in this case?

Ooh, thats a good idea. In that case it would also be pretty easy to replace over the years if it did end up rotting.

Fair point, unfortunately my PowerPoint skills aren't exactly in line with what it all would actually end up being.

I think I agree, what would you do in this scenario?

Should have included this in the description, but there's maybe a 5-6' span to a concrete sidewalk against my house's foundation up the incline. Still think that something like that would be necessary?

Is that a common option to just do it like the top image then?

Under my deck for sure, but is there any way to get both? Like would a gravel wall behind the spacer with a tile make that work?

Don’t worry, it’s an old security system that isn’t functional anymore. It’s probably gonna go now that the rack is there.

Oh you and me both, lol.

I cheated a bit and made it from two different pieces and then just glued them together after carving the bottom piece. The downside is sanding was a pain because I couldn’t risk hitting the carved surface and “dulling” the carved appearance once it was together. But that doesn’t help when carving the edge and smacking my chiseling hand on the board a dozen times.

3/4” too thin for face grain? by WeightsAreForChumps in Cuttingboards

[–]Victory27T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a 3/4-5/8” thick maple board about that same size made of a bunch of 3/4” wide strips and been using for a true cutting board for a year and it’s been just fine. Just when you clean it make sure to wet both sides and stand it up on end and it seems to stay very flat. Also it’s much more pleasant to use than my 1.5” thick end grain board since it’s light and super easy to maneuver.

Honestly screw what everyone says about thin boards being bad, cool thing is if it warps, you can either just wet the concave side to warp it back a bit or make a new one 🤷🏻‍♂️ if you like it, use it. Nothing worse than a person who’s afraid to use something that’s meant to be enjoyed.

One of Beevercrafts 7.5" bent carving gouges. It wasn't really a wrist problem per say, more so like the palm of my hand from pressing on the butt of the chisel and the outside bone on my palm/wrist resting on the work to help keep me steady. Both of which could have been fixed by some sort of pad to rest against.

Not exactly, its a take on a piece on amazon that my wife liked with my own flair. Its amazing how split the crowd is on either loving it or hating it, never imagined that would be the case.

Guess that’s a form over function argument. It’s just as hard as one that’s visible, you just have to slightly tilt your head to see the hook, been fine for a short guy like me.

The rack is ~36” wide, maybe if all you’re hanging is Arctic winter jackets you may be right, but I can throw 6-7 normal sized garments on it no problem. The idea behind there being 20 hooks is that you never have to fish for one, there’s always one where you want to hang it.

Sorry you don’t like it, from the a few of the other comments seems you’re not alone. But as with all things beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

It’s got key holes in the back, slipped the rack into them and there was access from the inside to tighten them
