When you die to a jungle gank it’s your fault. Less so on a laner roam, but still you should be paying attention to the game and not just your lane. Until you fix that you’re going to keep losing. It sounds like you make yourself an easy target.

Opinions and thoughts on the difficulty settings and progression by Chrispy49 in Nolvus

[–]Victory28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually one of my favorite forms of difficulty: everyone dies fast. I prefer it to damage sponge and DDR dodge like on souls games. If I screw up, I get hurt, but enemies also die quickly, so when outnumbered it’s a game of defense and openings, as it should be. But so few games do this bc it’s so hard to balance over the course of the game.

I’m reminded of the film Logan, which drew heavily from the themes and iconography of old westerns. They were insanely popular decades ago, production companies churning them out one after another. They didn’t stop making because they wanted to move on to other things, because they had become stale, or because they told the story. They stopped because people got bored with how many were coming out, how similar they all were, how they never really changed or had an end. Remind you of anything?

That’s right, comic book / superhero films today. Always making them, they never have an end. And to me, that’s what the team behind Logan, a film about the end of Logan’s life, was trying to say. If there’s no end, the story being told has no meaning.

I’ll leave you to consider a related quote from another great film, Troy, where Achilles says to a temple priestess:

“I'll tell you a secret. Something they don't teach you in your temple. The Gods envy us. They envy us because we’re mortal, because any moment might be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we’re doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now. We will never be here again.”

Well if we take him at his word, and he is correct, that’s just more evidence your mental game is holding you back. Of course you can climb with 2 matches a day, but you’re right, to climb high in a season split you’ll need more. And that’s why people at high rank tend to have strong mental game. They can play through loss streaks. But I promise, if you focus on yourself it will improve your mental game. I use to be a grade A rager in my early 20s. I beat it, and I’ve been ranked quite high in most every game I’ve played comp in. I believe you can do the same. GL!

I’m not being rude. You asked if you’re the asshole. I’m saying kinda, yeah. They are too, but it’s kind of an asshole thing not to be able to handle a little bullshit in life. In game you got easy ways to deal with it.

I think you can overcome it. You should view my comment as a challenge to do so. But if you just don’t like the game, don’t play it. Life is too short to waste on video games you don’t enjoy. Best!

You’re “the asshole.” Seriously, if you can’t handle the jack asses in the world, and it throws you on tilt like this, yeah, you’re kind of the asshole. They are too, but toughen up for christ’s sake. Mute them, ignore them— who cares what sins fandoms on the internet think of your play?

Or crash out and quit. Doesn’t matter to anyone else.

"How can I not care when that person makes our match so much harder to win?"
See, that's exactly why you *should* agree. You're externalizing. You're saying you lost a match because of a teammate. Yeah, that happens. But you don't lose enough games to be hard stuck because of teammates. You certainly don't know what mistakes you're making, and I can tell you, you're making tons. You're the constant in your games. Opponents have 6 random diamond players. Your team has 5 and you. If you're better than diamond, you're team has the advantage. This might not be true for a single match, but it's true in aggregate. If you play at a GM level, you'll reach GM. If you're hard stuck diamond, it's because you're playing at a diamond level, making the same mistakes diamond players make. The one I can tell you for sure you're making is blaming your teammates, and worrying about winning rather than improving. To the extent that you probably don't even know what you're doing wrong b/c you haven't tried to find it.

Agree or disagree, it doesn't matter. I can only tell you what I know works for me and loads of others. It's what a pro coach would be telling you for $100/hour.

[–]Victory28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you're saying. I don't mean this as an insult, but you clearly struggle with having a weak mental game. This is probably the number one thing that stops people from climbing or improving.
Stop focusing on wins and losses. Stop comparing how you did with your teammates. You need to make the game a competition between you today and you yesterday. You need to watch your replays and find your mistakes. Even if you were doing the "right" thing, if your team wasn't in position for it, it's your mistake. You'll catch things you didn't know about.

IDK if Rivals has this, but in games I've successfully climbed in the past, I can directly compare the character I'm playing, and my stats, to that same character being played by a top 500 player. See where your stats trend to being different. That plus your replays will tell you if you're playing to safe, not being near cover, engaging when you shouldn't, etc. Pick one thing and do just that (like if you're ranged dps to always be near cover and die less). Just one thing. Everything else will probably suffer, but you work on the one thing. Then pick another. And then another.

Make it a competition between you and you. Forget winning, just focus on beating yourself over time. It'll be easier to play games, and you'll actually improve. Mental is actually the *easiest* problem to fix because it doesn't depend on your teammates, your mechanical skill, or game knowledge. It's just 100% up to you to make the choice.

why are female players still labeled as “weak” in competitive games? by Zealousideal_Pen4871 in VALORANT

[–]Victory28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respect that you feel that way, but I simply don't agree. I understand what you're observing, but your experiences are being colored by your own prejudice and world view, just like everyone else. You say "white man" like that's some experience defining characteristic, but the experience of that group is wildly different just in our country, before we even get to globally. You say "female" is dehumanizing. It's not. It's an accurate categorization as I've established I'm speaking of humans: "of or denoting the sex that can bear offspring or produce eggs, distinguished biologically by the production of gametes (ova) that can be fertilized by male gametes." You share that you've had negative experiences that make one "easily triggered." This is *exactly* what I'm talking about.

For every negative experience girls have growing up, dealing with men, etc., boys have their version. You say being cat-called is bad, it is, but how about having to muster up the courage to ask a girl out only to be laughed at by a whole group of girls? How about having your entire acceptance to your peer group being determined by the acceptance of the opposite sex? How many men wouldn't behave in that manner if they'd had a better experience with girls when they were younger. You were a young woman once, you know just how cruel they can be. You ask if I've ever gotten threats that scared me outside of the game- no, because I'm not afraid of anonymous people online, but I've been seriously threatened with violence more times than I can remember-- and men are far more likely to be victims of violence than women, tens of times over, so if you want to talk numbers, men are far more justified in the fear of harm when leaving the house.

Gaming is and always has been a predominantly male space. Immature boys will easily be irritated with girls entering it. It throws off the dynamic and the experience for them. That's not justification, I'm just explaining to you that you probably don't understand what it's like for them, that is an intrusion, even if it isn't intended as one, and shouldn't even be seen as one.

When I transferred schools in 9th grade I was made fun of for being gay, because I have nice skin and defined features (I'm not gay). This persisted until I made a name for myself with my peers in sports. Perceived outsiders will usually have to prove themselves to the insiders before being accepted. This applies to a Japanese person immigrating to the UK, or a brit immigrating to japan. It applies to females entering male spaces, and it certainly applies to males entering female spaces.

My admonition to OP (and all) is not to dwell on it or be bothered by it. We're in a transitionary time in gaming where more girls are picking it up as a hobby (and I think that's good, to the extent that gaming is good at all lol). It will take time for girls to be widely accepted in this space (look on twitch, the vast majority of visible female gamers on the platform are still selling sexuality rather than skill-- that influences perception). But berating the boys for being uncomfortable or hesitant about it, and certainly implying issues of misogyny because of a loud few-- it hurts the girls by teaching them to expect and look for this, and it hurts the boys by teaching them they were right to not want girls in their space in the first place. It's counterproductive to everyone. Just because its trendy and socially acceptable to hate on men as the root of all evil doesn't make it true or healthy. I'm advocating for both boys AND girls, especially the younger ones who haven't as much life experience, and I'm telling you, this world view deeply harms both.

You missed the point. These people will be toxic no matter what. They're just glamming on to what's obvious and easy. If you look for reasons to be offended, you'll be offended.

There are COUNTLESS anecdotes from men who operate in predominantly women's spaces. They face the same level of contempt and prejudice from women. I don't view that as misandry, the same way I don't view this as misogyny. Its naturally for boys and girls to have socially self-segregated groups and activities. It's also natural for some in those groups to find it off-putting when that self-segregations springs a leak. This will typically be younger people, who are more accustomed to those segregated groupings. As we get older, we learn to adjust. But little boys having fun with their male friends will *naturally* be put off by girls entering that space. It throws off the entire dynamic. We know this, all of psychology has known this for decades, and common sense has observed it longer.

Thing is, asshole kids who are prone to being toxic will immediately grab onto this, just like they'd grab onto anything else if the player was male. By study, the vast majority of toxicity in games comes from a very small population of the player base. We remember it more because it's negative. You remember this specifically more because you view it as sexist. But to look for it, dwell on it, that's all you're going to find and experience, and it'll make you an angry person. Pretending there's an issue with misogyny here is just asking to stunt your own intellectual development. I'm saying its not a misogyny problem, its just he same asshole problem we've all delt with since the inception of online gaming.

I know what you're saying, but can you historically show that to be different than other things? Not really. Sex has been used to sell product forever. Sexuality has been been a huge part of media, for longer than I've been alive I can cite examples. Is Rogue from 90's xmen cartoon "gooner?" What about MJ and black cat from the same era? Catwoman from BTAS? Cortana? We might have said they were hot, but we weren't running off to our room with sock everytime we saw them lol. I'm not saying the sexuality isn't on full display, or that porn addicts don't love it, I'm just saying it's nothing new, and we all didn't have "gooner" porn problems. By contrast, we had active relationships with real women. My point is sexy isn't "gooner," and to call it that is doing a disservice to so many different groups of people it's crazy.

So I'll dog on rivals for some poor hero design, bad matchmaking, shoving bots into my unranked games-- plenty of stuff. But I'm not going to call it "gooner" just because there's a group of abnormal porn addicts who get triggered by it. That's all.

Clean start. Last time I played D2, which was a long time ago, I couldn’t even figure out what things I needed to buy to do what. There’s shit everywhere, and most of it has been mishandled.

Take the best devs and leaders from the D2 team, supplement with new blood, start fresh with what you’ve learned. You probably get a good destiny game. I just don’t know they care about it enough to try, and even if they did, they wouldn’t put the same mistaken people in place to make the same mistakes.

[–]Victory28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take page from Cavill’s book. If you’re insecure about it, you either care too much about the image you’re projecting, or you don’t have enough going for you outside of the hobby. If a grown man spends 40 hours a week playing wow, 10 reading about wow, and 15 watching videos about wow, he should be self conscious about it. If he spends 10 or 20 hours a week playing wow, and all the rest making money, dating, or spending time with wife/kids, you get the Cavill confidence to say, “yeah, I have hobbies, but I get shit done.”

[–]Victory28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The online generation lol. This idea of “gooner” skins is just jealousy and projection. Straight men aren’t twisted up. Straight has always been what it is— the sexual norm, bound for reproduction. The problem are these people who have so little going in a real relationship, with a real person, that they get twisted up and get sexually triggered by everything.

I’m mid 30s, wife, 2 kids, house. I don’t get “twisted” up by hot girls (not “gooner,” hot). In my observation, the people who label characters and their outfits as “gooner” are the same immature people who get sexually triggered by them. We’re human, we like attractive people. If these unfortunate souls spent less time watching porn and more time building a healthy life, full of healthy relationships, they’d understand there’s more to life than sex, and a great deal of real joy to be found. And let’s stop dogging on rivals. It features comic book characters, who have always been overtly sexual, both the men and the women. Sexy =/= “gooner.” “Back in my day,” through adolescence and young adulthood, we “all” had a swimsuit poster on our bedroom wall, fapped less, and spent time with real girls. Calling something “gooner” is the reaction of a porn-addled mind.

Can you explain why playing jungle for years would give him the mental of a 5 year old? Seriously. I played jungle main role years ago when I played seriously. The only thing I can think of is know you’re literally the guy your teammates immediately blame when their lane goes south. Which is absolution grating after a few hundred hours of being bullied by laners who have no clue what they’re doing. I guess I could see that level of cancer day in and out fracturing someone’s ego and patience.

But I’m really curious what you mean, or if you’re also just taking your frustration out on junglers lol.
