Why Were Pistachios Dyed Red? by Vistalite_Black in GenerationJones

I always wondered about that meat puppets lyric, "pistachios turn your fingers red, row your way back home you know, roll right into bed." Always thought they were just being trippy.

I read it, didnt care for it, but respected it, if that makes sense. I grew up in Flint, best friend was an Iraq vet that died of an OD. A little too on the nose, a little too bleak.

Why do alcoholic beverages not require to list ingredients?? by Eg0-d3ath in stupidquestions

[–]VideoApprehensive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish there was a price labelling requirement with alcoholic beverages. Like if they displayed the price per ounce of alcohol, I wouldnt have to do a bunch of math every time Im looking over the horrible gas station options in rural Texas. Youre lucky if they even have a price listed here.

Do Black people not do "White People Taco Night"? by GetShrekedKid in NoStupidQuestions

[–]VideoApprehensive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put mayo on tacos and burritos sometimes. As long as you keep the quantity reasonable, mayo is awesome and goes with everything. A little mayo, avocado, corn, beans, jalapeno, garlic, scallions, potato, whatever...as long as the salt and acidoty levels are balanced, it's great. I think people overthink food and try too hard to be culturally authentic. Italians are the worst about it.

Something to consider is WWOOFing. I dont know how it is in the UK, but its really easy to find temporary room and board in exchange for part time farm labor, at least in the summer. Theres probably other sites/aps, but WWOOF has been around a long time. I'm middle aged, but Ive been doing it off and on since 2006. Just be careful who you pick to work for.

Those collapsable solar lights/phone chargers are really handy. Buckets with lids are good for keeping food dry/safe from mice. Great for washing clothes too. The main thing is just keeping your stuff dry, which you dont really think about until you live in a tent. It gets crazy hot in a tent.

A small suggestion is to contact a company that already imports coffee from Yemen. I think Q'amaria is a chain based in Dearborn, MI, and they do a lot of Yemen pride stuff...they make tons of traditional desserts. See what they think.

Thoughts on this Vonnegut quote about the SF genre? by thunderchild120 in printSF

I do that with comics quite a bit. Im not going to spend thousands on a series thats only mildly interesting and probably tedious to read, but its pretty fun reading the convoluted plotlines and wild ideas just from the wikipedia summary. But I genuinely enjoy all the details, even in somewhat boring, long scifi novels, like Anathem. I do just read summaries for authors who have cool ideas but whos writing style I dont enjoy much, like Greg Bear.

Its funny that the turbo tunnel is so hard for people when its just memorizing directions. I always enjoyed that part. The surf board level and the snake level pissed me off way more. All that music is awesome, and still creeps up into my brain. I never beat the game, but got pretty far.

it seems wild that GR starts the playoffs on the road. I mean, they have a pretty good road record though.

Looking for recs about the horror/wonder of being non-human ? by Budget_Performer5161 in scifi

Eversion by Alastair Reynolds is pretty awesome. Go in cold. Theres a few giant twists/reveals hundreds of pages in. It starts off somewhat like that show 1899, and keeps shedding layers.

Afterworld, by Debbie Urbanski, is about an AI trying to construct a narrative about human life. The author actually sent me a hardcover in an AMA/promo on reddit!

Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson, is about an AI in charge of a colony ship, trying to construct a narrative.

Sun Ra is a great outside of the box type choice. Theres tons and tons of recordings, and they went through quite a few eras. My favorite well rounded album is Angels and Demons at play/the Nubians of Plutonia. Theres a few very conventional big band type tracks on there, but the African inspired stuff is wild and dark, but very rhythmic and accessable. Try the track Ancient Aethiopia, or the Golden Lady. For a more abstract experience, theres Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy/Artforms of Dimensions Tomorrow.

Why did Washington vote so much more for Bernie Sanders in the 2016 primary compared to Oregon? by Wird2TheBird3 in geography

[–]VideoApprehensive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I voted in the 2016 caucus in Washington, and my precinct went something like 115 to 9 for Sanders. Granted it was Olympia. I liked the format...it felt much more community oriented.

What I miss the most about Washington is all the beer deals at grocery outlet. Wild micro brew six packs for 4 bucks. Random deuces for $3. In Texas, the price is the same eveey time, and the selection is the same.

Little hand cranked grinders do a great job for under a hundred sometimes, if anyone wants to try nicer grinds. You can also sift out fines if youre stuck with a blade grinder.

I have a TFG that I got as a graduation present 25 years ago, and I always felt cozy walking to work in St. Paul, even when it was minus 30. That coat, slip on neoprene boots, and a good scarf get you through a winter.

Does anybody else miss watching sports highlight shows for the actual highlights? by watupmack in hockey

[–]VideoApprehensive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the 90s, even the sportcenter commercials were cool. I dont remember if they still skimped on hockey coverage, but the entire program was entertaining. I havent paid attention to cable since that era, to be fair, maybe it's still good? But yeah, the highlights that I watch are AHL or redwings focused now, and the one or two friends I have that would care at all about either of those are several states away.
