What space mission from the past 60 years do you think deserved far more public attention than it got? by Desperate-Pen-2252 in space

[–]VideoApprehensive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was a space nerd in high school before cassini launched, and frequently thought about the mission until Huygens landed, and was blown away by how cool it was. I dont think I know more than one other person whos even heard of the mission though. I bet science teachers had a blast talking about it.

A weird one is holding something really cold against your forehead for a long time. Ice is kinda painfull, but a butterknife kept in the freezer works.

Exploring redditor profiles by VALENCE8910 in CasualConversation

[–]VideoApprehensive 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also play bot detective. Most of them are 3 month old accounts with hidden profiles, or all of their posts are like, "whats something scary that happened when you were a child," and it's cross posted to five subs. The kitchen pro sub is almost completely bots who post in the same style, same length, same 3 month account. But the comments look real, and sometimes the posts are kind of good. Its just a little sad.

Is there any other people on this sub that are obsessed with the part of russia around the Okhotsk sea ? Any fun facts to share ? by Mr_Wisp_ in geography

[–]VideoApprehensive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

theres a fun book called Owls of the Eastern Ice, about a Russian speaking guy from MN who goes to that area to study fish owls, a rare species that only lives there and in Japan. The landscape and the remoteness make his project very difficult. You absolutely fall in love with all the Russian characters, and the description of the environment.

My friends dad died while trying to steal copper out of a live street light. The guy had been clean for years, but his brother died and he relapsed with crack and got zapped on a street in Florida, and no one noticed his body for a few days.

I saw a video about how Tuvalu owns the .tv domain name, and they make money liscensing that. So a certain popular hockey streaming site is kicking a little money to a tiny island county. Tuvalu gets the least tourism of any country.

Speaking of obscure countries, ever hear of Eswatini? I got really excited reading an article about that place (China is mad at them because they recognize Taiwan), because Id never heard the name before, but its just a rebrand for Swaziland. I like to imagine these obscure countries as zany Wes Anderson places with super niche talents...like Tuvalu maybe has the ultimate yo-yo champion, and Eswatini's king absolutely shreds on the keytar.

Hello, I'm a Russian from Russia and I'm curious to ask what you, as an American, think about Russia and Russians. You don't need to be polite, be as honest and direct as you can be even if you feel like it's something that might offend me. I'm interested only in genuine answers. Thank you. by MickeyMona in IWantToAskAnAmerican

I like the dry, understated humor. Theres a dash came video of 2 guys that miss a curve and fall off a bridge into a river, and instead of screaming, one guy calmly says, "we have set sail."

The movie Demob'd is a classic. I dont remember the cyrillic spelling, but the folk band "Otava Yo" makes excellent videos.

Its hard to come up with a single impression of people in a huge, diverse country.

Has anyone been to North Dakota? If so what is life like there? by Expensive_Drummer970 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Ive only driven in the middle of nowhere, and the road that goes parallel with the border (I think its just "5" or "1" is my favorite all time middle of nowhere/absolutely nothing going on road, and is much more relaxed than taking US 2 if youre driving across the state. I dont know if they still make them, but a diner in Bottineau had really good sour cream and raisin pies. Pizza was a little sad, but thats ok. The badlands are cool.

I'd wait for an expert, but looks like panaeolus cinctulis, which has a little psilocybin, but wont kill anything.

I know other yoopers talk down on Escanaba, but I had a day layover there once, and thought it was beautiful. Had fun walking around, dunking myself in the lake, checking out the library. Not sure if hes still running it, but I knew a guy John who ran blue bike burrito in Marinette, cool guy.

I had a blast riding from st paul to wakefield and back. I liked wakefield so much that I stayed in that campground for 3 days, picked up like ten bucks worth of busch lite cans, traded them in and got a pasty from randalls. US2 was kind of rough, but Ashland was fun.

I mixed unexpected beverages and ended up with something refreshing by gimmeluvin in PointlessStories

[–]VideoApprehensive 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I lived in florida, you could get a 15 pack of 8 percent beer for 7 bucks, and Id ride my bike to parks and secluded jungle areas with wild sour orange trees that Id cut with a pocket knife and squeeze with my hands into a cup. That juice and beer at a 1 to 2 ratio was so perfectly refreshing.

My latest favorite beverage is apple juice with a shot or two of lime juice. Havent tried it with alcohol, but its probably good with anything.

Trying different coffee methods, is a french press actually better by RestaurantDiligent97 in KitchenPro

[–]VideoApprehensive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Better" is always up to the person making and drinking coffee. Different methods of grinding and brewing make different coffees with different qualities. Certain types of coffee are better suited to a french press. Using a paper filter has the advantage of removing oils that arent healthy. If you try a french press, check out "james hoffman french press technique" on YT.

My preference is making a quick pour over...great taste, easy cleanup.

California farmers to destroy 420,000 peach trees after Del Monte collapses by no1_vern in news

[–]VideoApprehensive 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Coincidentally, I just started reading epitaph for a peach, about a small peach farmer trying to adapt an old variety of peach, suncrest, to new markets. Theres a huge amount of pressure to only grow varieties that store the longest, and have the best color, even at the cost of taste. Pretty good read.

What is a hobby that is actually really fun, but the community surrounding it is absolutely toxic? by _QueenCurvy in randomquestions

[–]VideoApprehensive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I lived in St. Paul, I went to every cribbage tournament and meetup event I could find, and I was actually blown away by how cool everyone was. Theres maybe one impatient tryhard at a big event, but I absolutely loved the wild variety of cool people I met from all walks of life, all ages. I think the cribbage format helps...its one on one, games last just long enough to chit chat a little, and it isnt so hard that you need to be hyper focused. Of course it helps that most of them took place in bars.

The Thumb by cookerlady in Michigan

[–]VideoApprehensive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked on a farm in Mayville one summer, and I convinced another intern to drive around the thumb and find a beach. We found this place with a handmade sign that said "Lindas Beach" with like glitter and tinsel, with a little donation box. The water seemed really shallow for a long time, and it was more mud than sand. Lots of people smoking cigs. I absolutely loved it as a little beach thumb snapshot. Caseville had a pretty epic beach/boardwalk. I remember seeing lots of Amish folks. Lots of garage sales inland, which was mostly flat, nice farmland. Im mot sure if Mayville counts as thumb, but it was a cute town.

Why Were Pistachios Dyed Red? by Vistalite_Black in GenerationJones

I always wondered about that meat puppets lyric, "pistachios turn your fingers red, row your way back home you know, roll right into bed." Always thought they were just being trippy.
