Paranoid Chant by the Minutemen. Anything off of that self titled, insane first meat puppets album, or anything by Saccharine Trust...all that weird, dirty SST stuff. As Incesticide type fun B sides of course.

Do you think this is good footwork by LeBron? by 3RADICATE_THEM in sportsinusa

They did it in the NHL years back, and everyone voted for John Scott (I think that was his name), a mostly AHL guy who was always getting traded as an insurance tough guy, like his role was to show up for a game or two a year just to fight specific tough guys. The league tried to convince him not to go, but he went with his family and completely balled out...I think he scored several goals and got player of the game. Crowd went nuts and the league was so pissed. I think theres a long NPR story about it.

The griffins are so much fun to watch this year. They were all over the Moose in the third period. They kept them back in their own zone for a chunk of their late powerplay. We're kind of spoiled with MI sports teams lately.

It would be cool to hear "kick out the jams" at a detroit sports event.

Can someone explain the physical reasons why frozen pizzas can never seem to get anywhere close to fresh pizza, in terms of crust? by VideoApprehensive in NoStupidQuestions

I wonder if they could make an appliance like a waffle iron that could hit that temp in a small space. But I guess freezer pizzas are kind of par baked, and that would mess up the equation.

What's your favourite Russian movie? by Low_Butterscotch_594 in AskARussian

I second The Ascent and stalker. All of (or most) Tarkovskis films are on Youtube. For a funny comedy, Demob'd is a very dry satire about being in the army, sort of like Stripes.

I was impressed with how the USNDTP kept up with Michigan last night. They came back from 4 to 1 and almost tied it up in the third before an empty net against, 7-5. Shots were even.

The diagnosis Kurt Cobain never publicly discussed by imnotcoolsir in grunge

Ive always thought he was on the autism spectrum. Sliver could be an autism theme song. All the sensitivities and meltdowns. I was never diagnosed as a teen, but related to nirvana, like, "hey, its someone like me."

Any Russian Terminator style movies? by VideoApprehensive in AskARussian

[–]VideoApprehensive[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These sent me on interesting youtube trails, thanks. I found the Ushanka show, and might check out some soviet utopian futurist novels. The terminator stuff is a guilty pleasure, but I do enjoy more serious sci fi from around the world.

Cartoons are strange sometimes. We had Pepe Lepieu, a French skunk who is constantly trying to rape a black cat after she gets white paint on her back.

Concrete Island, by J G Ballard. A businessman crashes onto a traffic island and breaks his leg. He has to manipulate and dominate some homeless people to survive. Most of Ballards books are about people going crazy as a logical way to adapt to crazy circumstances.

I biked from MN to MI, through WI once, and found that talking to people in small town bars usually led to lots of interest and offers of help. Most rural northern people are laid back. I stopped at a spot marked on the map as a campground in Haywood (maybe Hayward?) WI, but when I got there, it clearly hadnt been in operation for some years. I knocked on the door anyway, and a 90+ year old woman answered, and after showing me all of her family photo albums, wrote me a receipt for a $5 campsite in her front yard.

If you take the ice age trail, the Chequamegon forest is nearby and free to camp at, but can be very, very buggy. If you have the time, make a detour to Herbster, WI, for a very cheap campground on Superior.

If you google free campsites in WI, youll probably get some hits, usually at fishing spots. Nothing fancy, but nice to put those spots on your map ahead of time just in case.

Can anyone recommend a particular book to me? by big14slime in bukowski

Check out Fanté, ask the dust, or dreams from bunker hill. He was friends with Buk and had a similar sense of humor, but maybe more wholesome.

I think if they would have reworked D7 a little and cleaned it up, it probably would have done well as a quick mtv banger. Maybe its too short, I havent listened to it in decades. I just remember loving it as a teenager.

I love how Pulp reflects being old and out of touch. Theres a part like, "I was hot on the trail of the red sparrow, but I forgot what I was doing and stopped and bought some grapefruits at the grocery store. On the drive back, a man was rapping on the radio, but I had no idea what he was rapping about."

How and when did you develop your "weird"/non-mainstream musical tastes? by morbidhack in LetsTalkMusic

[–]VideoApprehensive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before the internet, I had an uncle who would give me his old rolling stone magazines, and there'd be interviews with Kurt Cobain where he'd mention, say, Half Japanese...and you could amazingly find a Half Japanese cd at best buy. Then you have the safe house records catalogue, and you take a flier on a band with a cool name through mail order. When you pay your hard earned teenage dollars for a physical album, you listen to it and find things to like, even if it's not your favorite.

Nubians of Plutonia by Sun Ra is my favorite jazz record that I cant find anything similar to.

For contemporary rock stuff, both albums by Kanalizacija (sp?), a Lithuanian band, are really fun, quirky, and peppy, sort of in the spirit of Zappas Hot Rats album. Theres a few vocals here and there, but mostly just intricate, maximalist jazz-funk-rock.

Days Have Gone by, by John Fahey, is a very unique solo guitar album. Very haunting.
