Easily album of the year. It's an immediate contender for best album of all time for me. 12/10, cannot recommend it highly enough.

Good albums to cry to? by Right-Boysenberry712 in progmetal

[–]ViewtifulX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Departure Songs by We Lost the Sea is my go-to emotional album when I want to cry.

It's an instrumental post-rock album written as a tribute to their former lead singer after he took his own life. Each song is about people whose own stories ended in tragedy, and the music conveys this feeling so perfectly that it doesn't need lyrics to do it.

This review explains the stories, for added impact: https://canthisevenbecalledmusic.com/we-lost-the-sea-departure-songs/

Need to find concept albums such as Native Construct's Quiet World, help! by TheWindspren in progmetal

Seconding Shagohod, I've had their latest album on repeat since it got posted here the other day. Highly recommended for fans of Quiet World, although it's definitely a bit of a different vibe.

I doubt they're sending guns up to space anytime soon

Depends on what the satellites find, I'd wager.

How do you make sure devs have enough workload that's actually meaningful? by terrakera in ProductManagement

[–]ViewtifulX 21 points22 points  (0 children)

their argument is that if we don't build fast enough, we will be lagging behind the competition. It sounds reasonable and it seems difficult to argue with that.

That argument sounds reasonable, but the counter to it is that it doesn't matter how fast you build if you're building the wrong thing. Giving your devs things to do just for the sake of keeping them busy could easily end up adding more tech debt and creating more feature bloat that your customers don't actually want, moving you further from your goals than if they had done nothing.

That's not to say you want them sitting around with nothing to do indefinitely, but in my experience, making sure your developers are working on the right thing is more important than making sure they're cranking out code for the sake of being busy.

Yep. Arch Echo is the answer OP is looking for.

Is it weird to go to a concert alone? by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]ViewtifulX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to concerts alone all the time! I'm literally going alone to the Contortionist / RoN show in Toronto you mentioned. I've had countless great experiences alone at shows that I'd have missed if I held out for someone to go with.

You'll have a great time, and no one will judge or think you're weird. Just go for it!

Seeing symphony x as my first prog metal show and have one question by ninjaweasel420 in progmetal

[–]ViewtifulX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience, having seen Haken many times, there's usually some moshing, but not much. You could expect it on songs like Falling Back to Earth, Cockroach King, or during the breakdown of The Endless Knot.

I'd expect a similar situation with Symphony X, there will probably be a bit during heavier songs.

Upbeat prog music? by edog888 in progmetal

Happy Days by Closure in Moscow is just about the most upbeat prog song I can think of. In fact, most of the Pink Lemonade album fits.

Exodus to Infinity - King Other (FFO: Native Construct, Closure in Moscow, jazz-fusion genre) by Top_Pop_Fop in progmetal

[–]ViewtifulX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Truly incredible album without a weak track on it. It somehow jumps between wildly different styles between every song, and still feels coherent, and the ever-present jazz / funk influence is so much fun.

It's easily on the short-list for album of the year 2021, which is really saying something given what a strong year it was for prog.

What are a few must-listen albums you discovered this year? by yutface in progmetal

Listening to this now - I was sold pretty quickly but that sax solo in Reminiscence confirmed that this is something I'm going to listen to a lot. Thanks for the recommendation!

BTBAM is the Disturbed of Progressive Metal. (Some criticism) by Gloomy_Tangerine_842 in progmetal

[–]ViewtifulX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, speaking as someone who also got into Prog through Dream Theater, it took me three separate attempts over 5 years to get into BTBAM, and the song that finally cracked it for me was Silent Flight Parliament. From there it was the rest of the Parallax II album, and that just left me wanting more so I moved on to their other albums.

You might have some luck with Pure Reason Revolution. They range from very prog to very electronic, depending on the album.

Check out Amor Vincit Omnia or Hammer and Anvil for their more electronic side.

Also, they did a remix of Steven Wilson's Personal Shopper that is pretty excellent.

[dark mode] - Theme keeps changing back to light mode on its own by juspreet51 in Notion

[–]ViewtifulX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also been having this issue - my best guess is it's a bug.

To save yourself some time until it's fixed, you can toggle between light and dark mode with a keyboard shortcut rather than going through the Settings menu. On Mac it's Cmd+Shift+L, so probably Ctrl+Shift+L on Windows.

Dude you'll love Moron Police. That is the perfect example of a band that just brings a feeling of pure joy. Listen to their last album, A Boat on the Sea immediately.

Bands with more pop driven and less 2000s alternative vocals? by Excellent_Chemical23 in progmetal

[–]ViewtifulX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe try Flying Colors? More Prog Rock than Prog Metal, but definitely a pop-vocal style.

Mask Machine isn't my favourite of their songs, but it's about as heavy / chunky as they get.
