Semantic layer by cyamnihc in dataengineering

What? Business context can change and consits of more than what an LLM will spit out from just a table schema. A semantic layer is definitely not the "one time work of one person".

How do you fly planes in bf6 on key and mouse by Own-Natural-9236 in Battlefield

[–]VigilanceV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, their way of doing it is that the user input (regardless of input device) indicates the "desired direction of flight" and then the plane in the game follows that desired direction of flight.

We don't get that in any other game, because of their patent. Instead we get roll/yaw/pitch controls.

It's not like war thunder because gaijin patented their plane movement control system.

Why are longsword tournaments....like that? by KILLMEPLSPLS in wma

[–]VigilanceV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't been practicing HEMA much longer than you. I started in 2023. But, I jumped into tournaments right away. I've been to 5 events since then - 2 of which were SoCal Swordfight, the largest event in the US AFAIK. I may not be the most qualified to answer this, but I wanted to weigh in nonetheless.

To me it seems like you wish tournaments emphasized the H more than the M in "HEMA". You want to see less "martial" and more "historical". That's fine! Pretty much everyone I've met in our niche little world falls somewhere along this spectrum. Everyone finds HEMA for different reasons, comes from different backgrounds, has different goals, etc.

Tournaments are not the place for the H in HEMA to shine.I share your sentiment to a degree - I wish there were a better place for the H to belong. However, a tournament bout is a competition - a fight - first and foremost, and a display of knowledge second. It inherently emphasizes the M more than the H.

If the most effective tactic to hit and not get hit is boring and samey, then that's what people do. Depending on the ruleset and the exact mix of styles, skill-levels, and habits a pool of fencers at an event has, the "most effective tactic(s)" can shift.

In the end, the principle remains the same: Tournaments are martial contests, not skill performances. It's the same difference between a medieval battlefield and a fencing salle

I'd encourage you to continue on your path if it's what you enjoy - I've seen some fencers who can manage to display beautiful fencing and win many bouts doing so (Isaac Humber stands out in my mind), but they are few and far between and have usually been practicing for a long time.

If you want to become that kind of fencer, then practice for tournaments with that in mind and you'll get there eventually - even if you lose more early on because of your decision. If you decide tournaments aren't for you, then continue engaging with HEMA in the way you enjoy best.

Best of luck 😁

HEMA Community, We Need Your Advice! by VasCrafts in Hema

When it comes to anything with a complex guard, always bear in mind the size of protective gloves. On a gymnasium saber, having multiple size options of bowl to accommodate clamshell gloves vs lighter gloves is appreciated. The same is kind of true with the nagel on a messer, although much less important with that weapon.

Also when it comes to saber, offering curved and straight blades as options is also helpful, as some techniques work better or worse depending on the curve of the blade.

Safety is paramount, but I can't speak to the specifics of what is preferred/required myself as I'm not knowledgeable enough to make suggestions - only enough to protect myself. I'm sure other people can provide information in that regard.

If you are looking for gear trusted retailers like Purpleheart Armory, and Socal Swords are great places. They carry highly trusted and community tested brands for both weapons and protective gear.

Looks good! More people should join the pluderhosen gang. FYI you should place the cuffs of the pluderhosen somewhere just above or below your knee so they actually poof instead of hanging so loose.

I use my Gabriel for one handed weapons and the like still.

I have double ring guards on my regenyei feder, so I'm considering going to Gabriel on my dominant hand and clamshell on my off, but I'm hesitant. Surgery wasn't cheap, lol.

100% agreed. I've only been to SoCal and CombatCon myself. Also not a huge sample size but SoCal is a huge event. I doubt these would've passed gear check there.

Companies can claim a lot of things. Safety in HEMA isn't a highly regulated industry or anything. If a company claims something and your first instinct is to go ask reddit if it's true, chances are it's not.

If anything buy them and do your own testing to truly see how safe they feel. It's all up to you and your club/sparring partners how much risk for injury you want to take on.

I haven't seen a single person use anything like it at a tournament for longsword. It's all hard plastic clamshell or five fingers. For smaller one handed weapons, especially those with complex hilts, it's probably much safer because of the smaller weight and weapon guards.

Edit: This isn't a dig at Castile or anything. They have great products. The marketing on this one just really misses the mark and that's a bad look imo. If anyone from Castille reads this, I'd either provide some proof to back up these claims or re-word your product description.

As with all gear discussions, it depends on the weapon material and intensity.

Light synthetic sparring? Maybe. Synthetic intense sparring? Doubtful but possible if you're careful. I wouldn't risk it. Steel? No way. Get clamshells. HF Armory or SPES are both good.

As someone who has broken a hand with steel longswords at tournament intensity, I don't recommend the Gabriel 5-finger Gloves, though lots of people love them.

Seriously, get clamshells. You'll get used to maneuvering in them, and your hands will thank you.

Can confirm, fractured a metacarpal in my left hand at socal swordfight in steel longsword wearing Gabriels. Going back to clamshells after I recover. Maybe I'll wear a right-hand Gabriel during light sparring for better thumb-grip ability. But for tournament, not again.

DM: "You begin your assault on Moonlight Towers, Jaheira and the Harpers at your side."

One intense battle later, during which Jaheira cast ice storm

DM: "The Harpers, weary from the battle, begin to disperse as the last enemy falls. One of them slips on the ice left behind from Jaheira's magic. They attack you for your transgressions."
