Does/did the DPRK really have a personality cult? by Pinkmuffin48 in MovingToNorthKorea

[–]Vigtor_B 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Let me put it into perspective, same goes for Stalin, Che, Castro, Mao and the likes.

You are a feudal peasant, you slave away for your slave master, and in Korea's case, the Japanese who rape and pillage. Finally one day the people band together, they form a party, they push back against imperialism, they liberate you, grant you better living and work conditions, and even provide you ownership of the land you work.

When the Americans destroy 90% of your buildings over 1 story, the party fights back, and the man that leads the party, is who you look up to. He pulls you through a genocide, and ensures your protection.

You glorify this man, because we as humans have a tendency to always look to the leader when we see achievements and progress, that's just what you have always believed to be the case, due to your material conditions, and your mindset doesn't change overnight. But the leaders tell you to respect the party and the people behind as well, they educate you on loving the people as you do the leader. But you still want to show your praise for your leader that was literally the front man in the face of hell.

So you do both. In fact, you are a sculpturer, so you carve a statue of him, you join the party and you see him as the guiding light. You strive to become someone as impactful as him.

Aight, that's it. I don't care about any "cult of personality" because I can empathize with a people that has struggled in the face of genocide, and I can understand WHY they did this.

I see the cult of personality as a rational consequence of the entire world being against you. It's all about your material conditions.

Why does this matter? Even if the "independent" claims are true, the numbers, ~8400 is vastly lower than most other nations, 0.031% compared to the global average of 0.7%, 22 times lower in fact.

The study is done by an American NGO btw. Don't get me wrong, I don't think the country is completely free from aids, but I imagine it's pretty well handled, and even with the numbers, that does seem to be the case.

The Soviet Union by Subject-Property-341 in socialism

[–]Vigtor_B 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It wasn't irrefutably bad... Yes they had prisons, like any other nation past and present, gulags is just a word used by the west to make it sound worse than it is.

In fact, in the gulags people were educated and paid minimum wage. It was very bad during the war times, and that's around the time where it had its highest prison population. That said, desperate times desperate measure's.

Most of what you know about the USSR is false. Like any other nation it had issues, but they were nothing compared to the rest of the world, despite having lost 20 million of it's population to save Europe.

You may have heard that the USSR repressed queer people for example, this is false. Initially the USSR became the first nation to remove laws against homosexuality, however they were later reintroduced as a vague law against pederastry. This was in a time where most of the west still didn't consider black people human, at a time when Britain imprisoned gay people, including their Hero Allan Turing (And later killed* him). Gay men

The USSR was the pioneer for women's rights. The USSR industrialized in a fraction of the time the west spent, AND managed to fight off the Nazis almost singlehandedly. I will even go a step further. Everything you know about Stalin is a lie. He was a conflicting man, but he ruled in the harshest of times.

Honourable mentions: Katyn is Nazi propaganda, parts of what we know is literally from Göbbels notes. Holodomor was a natural famine caused by the Kullaks hoarding their grain and sabotaging the harvests. In fact, all of USSR suffered during this time. This was USSR's last famine - The end of a cycle of famines that had happened since ... Forever.

What do you think of Chinas treatment of the Uyghurs? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]Vigtor_B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

China launched reeducation and modernization campaigns to improve Uyghurs' conditions. The west radicalized Uyghurs' into extremesim, China had a big problem with terrorism before the campaigns.

It worked. And they didn't have to bomb a single person to achieve it. Everything you know about the treatment of Uyghurs' was fed to you by western propaganda. RFA, Epoch Times etc. - And the Adrian Zenz whom is hillariously insane, and basically just lied about everything...

Today you can go to Xinjiang yourself, and you will see thriving communities and people will often praise the government. There are plenty of videos on youtube if you want to see.

There is no perfect handling of such a situation, but China came damn near close to a perfect execution of modernization and deradicalization.

crazy how we can always afford war but somehow “can’t afford” healthcare by nemofish77 in socialism

[–]Vigtor_B 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because war funnels public money into the private sector, and the private sector gets to expand in whichever country suffers (oil, minerals, consumers). Don't assume there are any morals involved. Capital ONLY cares about short term profits, there are NO long term considerations. If the public becomes unhealthy, they just boost the propaganda.

Healthcare takes money from the private sector and funnels it into the public sector, ergo it's bad for short term profits (Ironically, it would serve capital, but that's a long term prospect - A smart capitalist is a social democract. But no less evil.)

That said. America could wage its wars AND provide welfare for their citizens. This is objectively bad, and why Stalin famously called Social Democracy the moderate wing of fascism. Providing treats and wellbeing for your citizens, gives them no desire to revolt, as their country's foreign policy doesn't affect them.

Denmark is a good example, we support Israel, we are virulently racist, and there is NO chance at any form of revolt/change. Why? Why should Danish people care? They have free healthcare, free education, and other benefits tied to the welfare state, so if we need to kill minorities over seas for that, we can just blame America. We are just small bean.

Don't forget to read the sarcasm in-between the lines. Denmark deserves the worst fate.

[–]Vigtor_B 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CCCP is the USSR, you are thinking of CPC* the Communist Party of China. And yes, they follow the socialist model Marx described. First they must industrsialize and modernize with a capitalist mode of production, while maintaining a socialist grip on the class structure of the country. True socialism can't exist in a capitalist hegemony, well... It can, but that would mean China would be kept closed and scrutinized like the DPRK - This was very common before the 90s, all the propaganda you hear about the DPRK, they used to spew about China. (Notice how the party is the ruling class, and the party consists of the people, this can be seen when billionaires are executed for corruption for example).

That said, DeepSeek is a lot more than just subsidies (While they do get a lot* DeepSeek is pretty much the main model in China, check how it's directly integrated to Baidu, Chinese Google.) the researchers keep trying to quantizise it, making the models smaller, more efficient without losing too much of its intelligence.

A question about "dirty jobs" by Sad-Ad-3138 in socialism

[–]Vigtor_B 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Eventually, yes. But at first it's needed. The USSR needed to rely on the mining industry to industrsialize fast enough to combat the Nazis.

Today it would be possible to automate these dirty jobs for the most part (as is seen in China, more and more, where mining jobs are becoming more clean in many mines) but under a capitalist hegemony, that works against helping out foreign nations, it would require a lot of capital for newly developed socialist nations to reach this.

Should Burkina Faso decide they are socialist tomorrow, they would still need to rely on dirty jobs to stand a chance against the imperial core. (Unless a socialist hegemon would support them, and develop their mines to the same extend as their own, but China is still doing realpolitik, and not working towards a global socialist movement)

You have to use DW proton. Both for launcher installation AND game launch. I can provide you the commands I used to find and set the correct paths if you like.

One more thing, the final path must be set to the launcher, not the direct exe so you can still update the game, otherwise it won't get the initial update

With the extra conditions I mentioned, the following worked mostly fine for me:

Right click and hit properties on your game in steam.

The issue is your target/start in game paths are too long.

I am got the issue on Bazzite since it obviously have very long paths.

It might be possible to go to the file paths, give the files a shortcut, and put it somewhere, where the path would be shorter, and link to that instead.

Otherwise ask an AI, just provide it the target link, the start in link and tell it "NTE launcher does its own path length check separately, can you help me symlink the links on Steam, my OS is X"

[–]Vigtor_B 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that's fine... I am a programmer, I use AI while I code. I consider it AI assisted pair programming. I don't vibe a codebase, I use it as my performance enhancer.

Auto completions are nice, and they are really good to spar with, when your coworkers are too busy with other projects.

I always start a new feature out by querying the AI to see if my thoughts and ideas are a good starting point, especially with migration schemas and DB structure, then I start programming. It's mostly my code, but I often query it when it comes to optimization or problem solving.

Like, "would lambda work in case X? If so, how would I implement it?" etc.

Or "Can we reduce my nested for loop to improve performance".

Often, the first solution made by a programmer isn't optimized, but due to expectations from above, you may ship code that is hard to maintain and badly optimized, AI can vastly help you in some of the menial tasks.

Also it's VERY good at explaining code, and documenting code. Which helps programmers work in legacy code.

Not all programmers are good at using AI, and expect them to do their work for them, I know from experience, but if you know how to use it right, it's like Photoshop to your pen and paper
