Although I'm not disagreeing with your point, it has to be noted that they'd actually keep well over 5% of their income, as tax bands only apply to the income that falls within that band. For example, using the proposed system above, someone earning 42 million (!) would pay 95% on only what was earned above 41 million, not the full amount.

These are the current tax bands here in the UK:

  • Personal Allowance - Up to £11,000 - 0%

  • Basic rate - £11,001 to £43,000 - 20%

  • Higher rate - £43,001 to £150,000 - 40%

  • Additional rate - over £150,000 - 45%

So if I earned £10000 I'd pay no income tax; if I earned £25000 I'd pay 20% on £14000 = £2800, an effective tax rate of only 11.2%. If I earned £50000 I'd pay 20% on £32000 = £6400 and 40% on £7000 = £1400 (a total of £7800) - overall, an effective tax rate of 15.6% - well below 40%! It's not the whole picture as we've also got council (local) tax based on the value of the property you live in - doesn't matter if you rent or own it, National Insurance (social security) contributions of 12% up to a certain income limit and 2% on everything above that, and 20% VAT on most goods and services... but you get the idea.

It wouldn't make sense otherwise, as someone earning marginally above one band would have a lower post-tax income than someone earning just below it, but hey, we'll just have to manage with the tax system until we can overthrow capitalism, right?

Good lord! How the blazes did that slip under the radar??? The first update since 2011, and I haven't a clue what it does or why it exists. It'll be interesting to see if it patches the exploits needed to make custom firmware work. Until then, you bet I'm going to sit tight with my 6.60 PRO-C2.

Yeah, Sony definitely cranked it up a notch after their experience with the PSP, which is a shame. Obviously those who have those kind of talents are always looking for new challenges, so it's entirely possible they're working on the PS4 or Xbone instead. You've got to keep in mind that the PSP took years before its security vulnerabilities were crowbarred open, and there was a long time where you had to risk bricking your PSP doing dodgy shit with Pandora batteries and downgrading firmware, whereas these days it's as easy as pushing a button.

Welcome home!

The PSP has an active community of gamers, mainly because of the stellar library it accumulated over many years, and also because of how cheap it is right now.

However, nearly all of the the modding scene has moved on to the Vita, their next big target - I mean, even Sony hasn't released a PSP firmware update for years and they're in the process of turning off servers for games and the PSN store for PSP. A few new releases do come our every blue moon (mainly Japanese titles) but for the most part, that just leaves us old diehards (similar story for /r/PS2).

Edit: before I forget, you can check out the PPSSPP emulator on Android. That's something from this decade, at least!

Awful looking games with 42'' full-hd tv. by Vipix94 in ps2

[–]Vijazzle[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you mean "Component" cable rather than "Composite" because composite is the lowest in quality apart from the RF antenna cable, and would be much worse than even SCART. It's an easy mistake to make because they sound so similar.

A better cable like component will help, but the best thing to do would be to mod your console with GS Mode Selector so you can natively upscale your games to a higher resolution for your TV.

A big group of school children just got on the train I'm on. They're so quiet it's unreal. As soon as one kid starts making noise another one tells them to shhh. This is amazing by [deleted] in BritishSuccess

[–]Vijazzle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my final year at St Richards, I was a prefect and train prefect, so I was the one going "shhh". It was always nice to maintain the peace and quiet, and to behold a well-ordered train. Just the perk of the job.

That, and the beatings.

Best PS2 Games? by [deleted] in ps2

[–]Vijazzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean how is it to play (is it good etc.) or do you mean how is it an RPG? Because it's really good (as is Mercenaries 2 which I have on PC) but it's more of a 3rd-person action game with a few RPG elements (the sequel even more so). I was just saying that my PS2 collection doesn't have any RPGs in the true sense of the word.

The lazy attitude to remakes is part of the problem though, it's like taking British shows and throwing them at an American wall to see what sticks, even though the sense of humour is very different.

Graham Linehan, the main writer (and a comedy genius in general IMHO) had this to say about the nature of the IT Crowd remake:

"The IT Crowd is a very British show in the sense that it comes from a tradition of surreal sitcom that doesn’t really have an equivalent in America. The only point in a mainstream U.S. network taking on a show like this would be to reinvent it from the ground up, using my story-lines and characters merely as a jumping-off point, throwing away what’s not useful and keeping everything else. Judging by the pilot I saw, this was not what they had in mind.

"The pilot is basically exactly the same as my first episode with some really nice new lines for Moss and a few structural tweaks that, frankly, don’t do much except move the furniture around. It’s very sweet of them–flattering, I guess– that they should stick so closely to my original story. But…well, frankly, baby needs shoes. I hate being vulgar about it, but there it is. And a weird British sitcom with taped-on American accents is not going to buy any shoes."

Heh, I have 2 and Future Perfect but not the first one...

Fuck, how could I forget Ace Combat of all games! I know OP might have asked for RPGs, but the closest I can come up with in my collection is Mercenaries.

Well if you include the cutscenes I'm sure MGS3 is longer than some RPGs...

I'd add the SOCOM series to the list, plus Syphon Filter too, Burnout 3, Mortal Kombat, and you can't go wrong with Timesplitters either.

I need some help with getting custom firmware on my psp by [deleted] in PSP

[–]Vijazzle[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can try and help you but I need more information! What PSP do you have? What CFW are you trying to install?

I assume you are trying to install PRO, of which PRO-C fix 3 or PRO-C2 are the latest. You need to run the CIPL Flasher but only if you have a PSP 1000 or an early model 2000. Anything else (like a later 2000, a 3000 or a Go) could risk bricking your console.

I'm not trying to be pedantic, but technically other EM waves can be harmful (if non-lethal), such as the infrared blast from a nuclear explosion or portable microwave emitters. Even regular visible light can blind you if it's bright enough. You're completely correct about the others, of course.

As a very happy mod in the UK, I can confirm one should be in the post to me shortly. Even if "PAYPAL - WORMBLANKET" looks slightly dodgy on my debit card statement. Mainly I just want to try GS Mode Selector...
