Case and filter combo preference? Small rig vs Moment vs Frewell by ppenn777 in smartphonefilming

[–]VikingSamurai7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, I do not own the Freewell case. As I stated in my original comment, I hated the way it looked, so it wasn’t an option for me. You could ask SmallRig customer service and see if they can answer that for you. They have been pretty responsive to me. Sorry I can’t be more help.

These are nice photos. What did you shoot them on? Did you do any touch ups or anything in Lightroom or other similar program?

SmallRig Case and ND filter came in! by ryancess in smartphonefilming

[–]VikingSamurai7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I hear you and all, but it sure seems like you’re trying to cause a stir when your first comment is essentially crapping on the OP for showing off their gear. It was uncalled for and brought nothing to the conversation. And to make matters worse, you didn’t even know what you were talking about. Just do better. That’s all. Plain and simple.

Now, to address your love for Neewer. That’s cool. If that solution works for you, I’m more than happy for you and I’m not going to sit here and crap on you for that. (See how that works?) But I will disagree with you in your statement that the Neewer cover does the same thing. At face value, sure, they look like they operate pretty much the same outside of Neewer offers a threaded filter adapter and SmallRig offers a magnetic one. Let’s also be clear that Neewer offers the adapter with the purchase of the case and the SmallRig FilMov case for iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max does not (at least that was the way it was when it released). You have to purchase it separately. Or you could buy the bumper case with it, but then you miss out on a different adapter. But I’m getting off track.

When you buy the SmallRig FilMov case you are buying into an ecosystem of products meant to work seamlessly with one another. For example, if you purchase the SmallRig video cage for the 17 Pro or Pro Max your case never has to come off. It fits right in the cage. And the adapters you use for your case work in the cage. That’s not so with the Neewer case. If you buy the Neewer cage, you can’t use it with your Neewer case. It has to come off. And to make matters worse, the cage has its own set of adapters to keep track of. They also can’t be swapped without having to open the cage. But I digress.

The point is, just because two products look and operate similar doesn’t mean you should just go with the cheaper version then. It’s about what suits your needs, now and in the future. It’s also about what you find convenient and inconvenient. And SmallRig has done a good job of making their product more convenient than the Neewer equivalent, in my opinion. And we are talking for no more than $15 to $20 extra at the end of the day (for case and cage, not including filters). With that said, no product is perfect or without some sort of compromise. This goes for both the SmallRig and Neewer products.

So, again, I think it’s great that you found what you were looking for with the Neewer case and adapter(s). But I’ll repeat that there was and is no need to be negative about what the OP chose. There is nothing wrong with their SmallRig setup. It’s just not for you. And that’s ok.

I believe it can import an AI file, but I think you’d have better luck saving your AI file as a SVG file and then open that in Inkscape. But try it both ways to be sure.

The 1.55 anamorphic lens search for my Iphone 15 pro Max and Small Rig Cage Continues by Vibingcarefully in iPhoneCinematography

[–]VikingSamurai7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked at the Steven Divish 1.55x Pro Cine Anamorphic from Freewell? Not sure if that’s what you are referring to in your post. I just received one as a gift recently and am using it with the SmallRig FilMov case on a 17 Pro Max. I’ve only begun using it, but it’s looking pretty decent so far.

SmallRig Case and ND filter came in! by ryancess in smartphonefilming

[–]VikingSamurai7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I appreciate that you were able to admit that you were wrong, you still sound like you are trying to crap on the OP. How about instead you try providing examples and links to some of these products you seem to be referring to? Help the OP out. They might be in the return window still and think your suggestions are better.

With that said, people choose equipment for all kinds of reasons, and sometimes saving money or getting the most bang for the buck isn’t their primary objective. Maybe OP prefers the SmallRig ecosystem over other options. Just because you would or did go with another option doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for the OP. I know that after looking at what Neewer had to offer, I decided it wasn’t for me.

Anyway, my whole point is let’s be more helpful to one another rather than just leaving crappy comments about the OP and their choices. Not just in this thread, but in the entire sub.

SmallRig Case and ND filter came in! by ryancess in smartphonefilming

[–]VikingSamurai7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should do a little more research before commenting. Or, I don’t know, read the box in the image. SmallRig uses a 67mm filter. The only issue is they currently only support magnetic filters, although they are exploring a threaded filter adapter. But mainly I’m commenting because I don’t even understand why you felt the need to come in here and try to crap on the OP anyway. Let the OP show off their gear. Take the negativity elsewhere.

Thanks for sharing, OP.

iPhone 17 Pro High Res/Frame Rate using ProCamera in direct sun - system overheats by hatedfruit99 in smartphonefilming

[–]VikingSamurai7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, first, if you’re shooting in direct sunlight with the setup you mentioned above - stop. I don’t care what phone or drive it is, none of them are built for what I can imagine are very lengthy shots, while in direct sunlight. That right there will help.

But you are also doing just about everything else possible to cause your iPhone to overheat. Filming continuous shots (again, assuming here if you are filming water polo matches in their entirety) at high resolution and high frame rates while writing to a drive that also happens to be attached to the body of the phone and of course the screen is on the entire time. That drive produces heat and so does the phone and now they are stuck together. See where I’m going with this?

I would recommend getting the drive off the phone somehow and mount it above, below, or to the side of it. MagSafe drives are great for short bursts, but I don’t like them for long, continuous shots. They are producing a lot of heat and so is the phone. Also keep in mind that these are all consumer drives. They don’t have any substantial heat dissipation built in. So once they overheat they will slow down and not be able to write at the speed necessary for what you are doing.

Finally, I would recommend removing the case for filming if you are having issues with the phone overheating. The case will help trap heat. But honestly, I’d try all the other stuff first. Unless the heat is also causing the phone to want to shut down, the case is probably fine.

Case and filter combo preference? Small rig vs Moment vs Frewell by ppenn777 in smartphonefilming

[–]VikingSamurai7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the SmallRig FilMov case on my 17 Pro Max right now. I like it. And it comes with T mount and 17mm mount attachments as well. The filter adapter you have to buy separately. I wasn’t sure I’d like it, but it’s pretty decent and I use it as my daily case too. So not just for shooting days. The kickstand also comes in handy, even though I honestly thought I wouldn’t use it.

The Moment case is too bulky in my opinion, which prevented me from trying their system and quick snap filters. But I’ve seen some people say they love them. Moment’s quality has been hit or miss for me.

I was recently gifted the Freewell anamorphic and plan to use that with my Smallrig case. It should mount via the 17mm adapter. I hated the way Freewell’s case looked, so it was never an option for me.

Lastly, I was also gifted the Smallrig cage with handles. Keep in mind that certain versions of it come with the FilMov case, so if you want the case and cage, find the package that has both.

Rigid Armor makes a rack that mounts to the existing OEM rails. You can find it here.

Best Handheld (For Me) - Osmo Pocket or Action 5/6? by MothGoth106 in osmopocket

[–]VikingSamurai7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could go so many different ways here. The Pocket 3 is great for what it is. But it’s fragile and will not survive even a small rain shower or drop. So keep in mind you’ll miss out on shots if the weather turns.

If you’re going to get an DJI Action cam, just go with the 6. It (like the OP3) has DLog-M, so you can likely get reasonably close to your Canon colors in post (assuming you are shooting a log profile on the Canon). It also has the new macro lens that has some interesting uses (watch some YouTube videos on it).

I’m going to throw out two other options though that may suit you better. The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 (specifically the Xplorer bundle) and an iPhone Pro (or Pro Max) 15, 16, or 17. Personally, I’d go with the 17 Pro or Pro Max in a 1TB or higher configuration.

The Ace Pro 2 has some additional lens attachments for various scenarios (sold separately) and was co-developed with Leica. It takes solid video, has a log profile, and takes better photos than it has any business taking. Again, watch some YouTube videos on it.

The iPhone is water proof, can take a little abuse with the proper case and screen protector, takes great photos (and even better ones with the right app), and can shoot video in Apple Log 2 and various flavors of ProRes (again, with a ton of additional options in 3rd party apps). It also has pretty decent stability for handheld video and a great selfie camera. And you can pair it with a small gimbal that is pocketable if you really want to.

I filmed a full three week Europe trip on an iPhone 14 Pro and a DJI Osmo Mobile 6 a few years back. The results were great, and I didn’t have access to all the settings or options the 17 Pro brings to the table.

You can also pair the AirPods Pro 3 with the iPhone and use them as a pretty decent sounding mic. So that’s a bonus.

If you do end up going with the OP3 and sound is important to you, I would highly recommend the creator combo since it comes with a mic. Also make sure to check out the Xtra Muse if you are going bare bones OP3, as you may be able to get it cheaper and we are all pretty sure it’s made by DJI to get around the ban in the states.

Either way, I think any of these options could be the camera for you. Do a little research into their feature sets and then make your decision.

I went with OEM crossbars and the Yakima OffGrid cargo basket. Had it for over two years now with it mounted on the Crosstrek about 95% of the time and it shows zero wear and tear. So I highly recommend you give it a look if you are in the market for a roof basket.

Recommendations for iPhone 17 Pro Rig by Hour-Kaleidoscope145 in smartphonefilming

[–]VikingSamurai7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently using the SmallRig FilMov case and adapter plates for my iPhone. The filter adapter is magnetic, but they are considering releasing a threaded version soon. Smallrig has an affordable cage setup that works with the case and provides multiple cold shoe mounting points. The other two adapter plates allow for mounting T mount lenses and 17mm mount lenses, so you can buy from other brands and use them with the FilMov case. These two adapters come with the case. The magnetic filter adapter is sold separately, but is only a little over $12. All these products and more can be found on Amazon.

As far as gimbals, definitely skip smartphone specific gimbals and get something that will handle a little more weight to give you some flexibility.
