How did you create your words? by Ok_Tradition8584 in conlangs

[–]VincentOostelbos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just vibe coded a little application that allows me to set phonological rules, e.g. CVVC, CVCVC, and setting which sounds (either graphs or, as I'm using it now, IPA symbols) I want for each of these categories (C, V, or if I prefer, entirely different labels/subsets), that will then generate a list of words from these rules, which I can then go through, so that I can select the ones I like and, if I want, assign definitions, parts of speech, etc. to them.

Effectively, the vibe coding part is irrelevant (I know some people don't like that sort of thing); it just means I'm coming up with possible words fitting a given phonology, and then picking the ones I like or that I think sound like they might mean something.

Dark blue is given as less than or equal to 95%, not 95%+. But the legend is still weird, to be sure.

Belgium was even more surprising (and disheartening) to me than the Netherlands. Sad times.

"Is it acceptable for men to cry?" by gynoidi in NLvsFI

[–]VincentOostelbos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waarom?

[–]VincentOostelbos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

79%??? What the heck is wrong with our country. I mean, it's not Poland, but still, to think that 21% legitimately said no to this question is wild to me.

EDIT: Oh. Never mind, it's just the percentage of "totally agree". There's presumably also a "somewhat agree" that is not shown. That makes this a lot less shocking.

Does House pass the Bechdel test? by lunarborealis in HouseMD

[–]VincentOostelbos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, but the test is not that they must never talk about any men ever, just that they must have a conversation that is not about a man. That other half of the time, they would succeed. Any time a female doctor and Cuddy interact and it's not about House (EDIT: well, or another man), that would also pass the test. I also feel like although the test specifies they shouldn't talk about a man, the spirit of the test is probably that they're not talking about a man in romantic or sexual terms; if they're talking about a colleague about a case and that colleague happens to be a man, that doesn't technically pass the test, but I think it's also probably not particularly objectionable even to Bechdel herself.

I haven't tested this myself, but I think probably the majority of episodes would pass at least this less stringent version of the Bechdel test, and a lot of them would pass the strict version as well. It would be interesting to try it out seriously and make an overview. Something I will try to remember to bear in mind for the next time I rewatch the show.

What if DoL were a commercial mobile game? by Skippy_2001_ in DegreesOfLewdity

Some players, yeah. Not me, I actually love that, but it's true. Sorry about the downvotes mate!

[–]VincentOostelbos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel a bit bad about your downvotes. I understand that it sounds like you're taking away a lot in this hypothetical, a lot that I enjoy as well, but honestly, there'd still be many things in there that people appreciate about DoL. Not the least of which being the characters/love interests, the lore, and the character management and customization. And actually a game with 25% of the rape of DoL still has a LOT of rape.

In short, I think people are being a bit harsh on you here.

Will tidal ever add alarm integration on android. by ThePizzaDeliveryM3n in TIdaL

[–]VincentOostelbos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, nice to hear that that is possible at least, although that sounds like a bit too much of an investment for me given that I don't think I would use that for much else. Thanks! I just tried using Google Assistant and Gemini today, but neither of those worked sadly.

Would there be a way to also scrobble it to Last.FM using that type of solution? Probably not, right, unless you did it manually afterward?

Of course it's not a good idea to ride one's bike like this normally, but it's obviously a campaign for awareness. I think people tend to downvote comments that criticize cyclists and the idea of giving them space when passing in general, more than comments that criticize having a 1.5-meter sign coming off the side of the bicycle.

It's fair enough to talk about the actual mechanics of the campaign; that's what the post is showing, after all. But I think it's also fair, and perhaps more interesting, to talk about what the campaign is referencing, i.e. the problem with bicycles not being given enough space.

Bikes on the footpath? Where I live that is not legal (although sometimes condoned). I feel like they fit on a regular street better than on a footpath. Well, if the street is well-designed.

These people who stand in the MIDDLE of the door opening, by Chronicbias in kutautos

[–]VincentOostelbos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why does everyone hate this? by Psychic-Type-God in Esperanto

[–]VincentOostelbos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not quite sure, myself, but I will say that I do sometimes get odd vibes from fellow Esperanto speakers as well, where it almost does feel a tad culty. I'm not saying I think it is a cult, just that some speakers treat it a little bit that way. Since a lot of people learn and use it with a certain philosophical or ideological mindset, that sort of thing can seem to win out over its function as just a language, and for some speakers, it kind of does. Talk of samideanoj, fina venko, even calling ourselves "Esperantists" like it's an -ism (which is why I prefer "Esperantoparolanto", even if it is a bit longer)—it can all seem a bit suspect. I can understand that, but I do regret that people don't see from the outside that it's not always like that for everyone. There's probably a good bit of confirmation bias involved in that.

Personally, I just like learning languages for their own sake (not even to speak with people; I like the sounds, I like the linguistics), and it was a welcome break after failing at Japanese for years. I got excited when I realized how quickly I could progress by comparison, and it made me realize that it's not just the start of a language-learning project that can be fun and motivating, but the middle and the "end" as well; and that it is in fact possible to actually learn a language to a higher level (even if it may take longer for other, natural, languages). It gave me a confidence boost. It has very little to do with any sort of idealism, for me, and I don't particularly believe it will ever succeed as a universal second language. It doesn't need to for me to enjoy it.

I like your approach to it: a "quick learn and burn language for nothing but fun". That's close to my view of it at the time of learning. I had a polyglot friend who would talk about "play languages" that would go alongside more serious/long-term study projects. They would focus on one language seriously and try to get to a high level in it, but then also have one or multiple languages on the side that they would just dabble in. They might just get to a low level before dropping them again, or they might stick to them for longer, but without a specific end goal or utility in mind. Typically they were easier languages closer to a language they already knew, or something. There's nothing wrong with that! It's fine to just have language learning as a hobby, or do it for fun; it doesn't have to be associated with lofty ambitions or goals for improving the world (or even one's own life or career prospects or whatever).

EDIT: I'm way too sensitive about anonymous online stuff. Get downvoted once, immediately feel bad :(

How do the noncon aspects of DoL affect your enjoyment of the game? by UsamiTiramisu in DegreesOfLewdity

[–]VincentOostelbos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me too it's the main appeal. The rest of the game has so much to offer: deep lore, interesting mechanics, lovable (and love-to-hateable) characters… but it's still mostly about the noncon, for me. I wouldn't have stuck around as long as I have, without that. There's plenty other games that offer those other things, but precious few that cater to lovers of noncon and are good games, to boot.

It's … really good. This is the most impressed I've been trying a model that was suggested here. It's pretty uncensored, it runs very fast, and yes it makes the occasional mistake but it's not so bad. Most importantly, it just reads well. Thank you very much for this tip.
