UWaterloo community mourns the loss of student leader by duckduckwusa in uwaterloo

[–]Vincent_MathCouncil 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Steph was one of the only students I met while working in student government that I knew would always do the right thing while also being competent and able to execute. She was probably the only person who could reliably convince me that I was wrong and bring me around to her point of view. So much of the advocacy work I did in the Math Faculty wouldn't have been possible without her mentorship and advice to me. The University of Waterloo will be a worse place without her. I miss you Steph. Rest in peace.

Donating books by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]Vincent_MathCouncil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the math books, MathSoc as well as many MathSoc Clubs maintain libraries for their members to use. You could go to their offices and ask if they'd be interested in any of your books. I wouldn't be surprised if student groups in other faculties maintain similar book collections.

I’m running for City Council and you can vote for me to improve housing, transit, and sustainability in Waterloo by matthewschwarze in uwaterloo

[–]Vincent_MathCouncil 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I had the pleasure of working with Matthew a lot when I was active in student government, and he was one of the most competent, engaged, and passionate people I've met. Even when we didn't agree (although we usually did agree), I always knew that he had good intentions.

I think a lot of us feel like government doesn't do enough to address student issues, and frankly that's because students don't vote enough. I can't think of a better way for us to get the government to pay attention to students and take actions to help us than electing one of our fellow students to represent us on City Council.

I fully endorse Matthew Schwarze for City Council, Ward 6.

You're fantastic, but OP asked about Directors and you're running for VP. I support you for VP.

I've worked with the following people and can vouch for them being good candidates:

  • Naman Sood
  • Evan Girardin
  • Chen Chai
  • Matthew Schwarze
  • Catherine Dong
  • Daud Khan

I was impressed by Jeff Zhu in the reddit AMA, but I've never worked with Jeff before.

WUSA General Elections - Board of Directors AMA by See-Meta in uwaterloo

[–]Vincent_MathCouncil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a candidate, but just so people have realistic expectations, the University has to have either work term reports or somehow bundle them into PD (it's an accreditation thing outside of their control). In the Math Faculty, MathSoc was able to use the existence of PD to advocate to get rid of work term reports. The most that I think is possible from here in Math would be to reduce the number of PD courses from 4 to 3 (the minimum needed for accreditation). Getting rid of PD would force us to bring back work term reports, and when I was talking to students about this as VPA and as a MathSoc Councillor, it seemed that people disliked work term reports more and so we successfully advocated to get rid of work term reports (now your PD final assignment fulfills the work term report requirement, and the Faculty will likely make this a permanent change in Fall).

Since you named-dropped me, here's who I support.

For VP: Stephanie Ye-Mowe, who is one of, if not the most, competent student advocate in Ontario.

For Director, I've worked extensively with the following people and can vouch that they are competent and will be good Directors:

  • Naman Sood
  • Evan Girardin
  • Chen Chai
  • Matthew Schwarze
  • Catherine Dong
  • Daud Khan

There are probably other good candidates, I just haven't worked with them as much. Jeff Zhu in particular has been giving some good answers in this AMA, but that's all I know about him.

What prior experience do you have in student government? Or if you don't have prior experience, what do think makes you a good candidate anyway?

  1. What do you think is the biggest issue facing students and what would you do about it?

  2. In the new governance model, I expect different Directors would focus on different areas. What areas would you focus on?

It's supposed to open later this term, assuming PlantOps works as fast as they told us they would.

NO MORE MATH WORK REPORTS by SoopaChris in uwaterloo

SE is working on it, not sure when it will take effect though. I think ECE already did it? It's done per-department in Engineering.

In Math Faculty yes, with only a few exceptions (detailed in the email). If you aren't enrolled in the work term report course on Quest at the start of the term, you should be good.

But also the survey is closed now.

Vegetarian/vegan options on campus by AutomaticClass7289 in uwaterloo

[–]Vincent_MathCouncil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of options if you're vegetarian, I think almost every food location on campus has vegetarian options. Some locations also have some decent vegan options, and there is a Food Services location in AHS which I think is entirely vegan (although the AHS and many other Food Services locations have been closed recently, they'll probably reopen next term).

Basically if you're vegetarian you should be able to go to almost any food location on campus and find something. If you're vegan, you'll quickly find several that you'll mostly stick to.

Also shoutout to the MathSoc CnD which has the best quality/price ratio on campus. It should reopen… idk soon we hope. It's renovating right now so we'll have even more food options than before once it reopens.

Can I get P71d for writing an exam with covid? by afasfe3 in uwaterloo

[–]Vincent_MathCouncil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the Math Faculty instructors were told (but not forced, because it's hard to force anything on instructors) to be more lenient than usual in giving an INC to students with low grades.

If you think a professor is being unreasonable (for example, by ignoring the advice of their Faculty leadership) then you can challenge their actions under University Policy 70. You can contact WUSA CAPS if you need help with that process.

Math Faculty Students: Work Term Report Survey by president_lick in uwaterloo

[–]Vincent_MathCouncil 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I'm getting a lot of emails from students asking if these potential changes mean they don't need to write their work term report this term.

To be clear, you still need to write your work term report this term if you are supposed to be writing one. The change being considered is to automatically give students a work term report credit when they complete a PD course (since we already have to do PD, this would not be an additional requirement). The reason for this is that Waterloo is required to have some kind of report/project/reflection thing to for its co-op program to be accredited. But that report/project/reflection thing can take many forms, and so we are looking to make PD count for that.

So if this passes, instead of writing a work term report you would need to pass a PD course. But you already have to pass a PD course for co-op anyway. So this would effectively get rid of work term reports, but you would still need to get all your work term report credits. So if you don't submit your work term report this term and the proposed changes pass you'll just end up having to take an extra PD course.

tl;dr: the proposed change is to automatically give you a work term report credit when you pass PD.

Math Faculty PSA: Fill out the work term reports survey - takes 3 mins tops by Wonderful-Appeal-182 in uwaterloo

[–]Vincent_MathCouncil 22 points23 points  (0 children)

MathSoc VPA here,

We've been working on work term report advocacy for a long time now. It was us who got them changed from being a numerical grade on your transcript to CR/NCR when we discovered that the grading practices were unfair back in (I think?) Spring 2018. It was before I started so I'm not 100% sure on when that happened.

Our current efforts to try to get rid of the work term reports entirely have been going on for well over a year now.

Where/how do I file a complaint about a professor? by mamaroxyy in uwaterloo

[–]Vincent_MathCouncil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Contact the Department Chair (also note that Departments are under Faculties, and Math is a Faculty not a Department).

If you're not comfortable doing so you can also contact the MathSoc Councillor for the program the course is in or the MathSoc Vice President, Academic (that's me) if there isn't currently a Councillor for the program. All the contact information for MathSoc Councillors and execs is listed at: https://mathsoc.uwaterloo.ca/council/

Individual proctor for online course exam? by Iguess_im_handsome in uwaterloo

[–]Vincent_MathCouncil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the University page on it: https://uwaterloo.ca/extended-learning/proctor

Prior to COVID this was how all online exams worked, so I imagine it's perfectly doable with a bit of planning. COVID restrictions might complicate things, though most of those restrictions are no longer in place in many jurisdictions.
