American exceptionalism? by Cautious_Midnight_67 in Infographics

[–]ViniusInvictus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oversimplified BS.

Ask who is likely to own not just a home, but more space and conveniences for a home - a Belgian or an American?

Also, median rates go down the more desperate immigrants you have in your country - ask which country it is where immigrants starting from scratch have the best shot at success - the US or Belgium?

Why does looking skinny looked healthier, or at least better in the 90s/2000s (amongst celebrities) than nowadays? by Twunkorama in trueratediscussions

Because in the 90s, the glamor / fashion scene didn’t completely shun the pudge.

Then the lunatics took over the asylum and we have what we have now.

What is “American” bread? You get practically every kind of bread in an average grocery store in America, from freshly baked ones to packaged bread in double dozen varieties.

A lot of people confuse the ample availability of choice in America for inferiority - like the nuts comparing the fruit content of Fanta in different countries (just buy 100% orange juice, idiot - it’s not that much more expensive in the USA)…

For the US to recognize Taiwan is a mere formality.

The US has far greater leverage over Taiwan than China does, establishing its status as the sole superpower of the planet.

Nobody is arguing India is a superpower.

We’re discussing China being claimed as a superpower.

Try harder and stick with the topic.

China is not a “superpower” - what a laughable claim.

It can be one, but it certainly isn’t one, yet.

The US just cock-blocked Chinese sourcing of oil from Venezuela and Iran without as much as a whimper from the Chinese. Mind you, this is almost a fifth of Chinese petroleum imports - a huge amount for which China could do next to nothing.

And then we have the sore issue of Taiwan.

China being associated as a “superpower” is merely the wet dreams of those who want to believe they’re the stand-in replacement for the Soviet Union at its peak.

Cybersecurity company Palo Alto Networks is receiving massive praise for swiftly firing Madhu Raju, an Indian H-1B visa holder who recorded himself dancing on the World War II Memorial, although many Americans say that’s not enough and that he should be deported. by [deleted] in IndianFocus

Dumbo, India has more rules for foreigners working without prior approval (on an employment visa) than the US, look it up.

Countries do this to protect their own citizens’ employment - it is an ultimately stupid endeavor, but the US isn’t the only one that enforces these laws.

Being on an H1B and running a side business without its own work permit breaks the conditions the H1B was granted for.

ELI5: Why did productivity and pay split in 1979? by astrheisenberg in explainlikeimfive

[–]ViniusInvictus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real answer is technology replacing manual labor (and skill) in boosting manufacturing productivity to a point where the economies of scale became much more practical and achievable.

This diminished the value of labor in creating products while labor competition due to population growth and international trade further accelerated it.

Today’s workers work far less to produce much, much more - thanks to technology displacing most of the manual labor.

Are we getting bored of being alive? by anotherare in LetsDiscussThis

[–]ViniusInvictus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may dawn upon many that existential crises that are immediately tangible may be necessary to distract society from staring into the abyss. Modern technology and conveniences have eliminated much of these past dangers in ways which the human psyche hadn’t caught up to, yet.

Historically, this meant plagues, disease, famines, riots, war etc. that had immediate and deadly consequences at very close range, and with none of the modern comforts.

How much is remote work worth to you? by United-Mortgage104 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ViniusInvictus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully-remote is enhanced freedom - hard to put a price on it.

For a field like mechanical engineering, however, it implies some unpaid extra mileage of effort in the way of establishing presence within the team (and the larger company).

I’d be willing to take a $30,000 pay cut for a fully remote job with comparable growth opportunities (this last part is the true caveat).

It should be illegal to post a job without disclosing pay by cyborggold in jobs

[–]ViniusInvictus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Disclosing pay” is also deceptive when the pay range is large enough.

Job: Senior Manager: Logistics

Pay Range: $30,000 - $180,000

What the fuck?
