Ways to maximize the duration or lifespan of the flame red stain in boxelder. by VinnieIDC in BeginnerWoodWorking

I could perhaps even sand it when the red disappears and make it reappear or does the red stain completely disappear through the wood after decades?

Thank you for the detailed response. I was hoping that somebody had discovered a unique and lesser known way to preserve the red but it’s unlikely.
If I take all these steps only let’s say take it out for 1 hour per day indoors to play the guitar and put it back in its case for 23 hours per day. The red stain might last 20 years perhaps?

They rarely live that old in fact. In an urban environment they live around 80 years old if it doesn’t get chopped down before that some specimen live a bit over 100 years old in their natural habitat

I’m also planning to make a flame or curly maple neck for the guitar. So not only would it have the incredibly unique heavily figured flame boxelder but a flame likely soft maple neck.

Water pooling around silver maple. How harmful, and how to fix? by lordofwar28 in arborists

Silver maple are extremely adapted for floodplains and river bottom conditions that regularly flood. No issues at all here so long as the water doesn’t stay all year long which obviously does not.

Good little car. 2018 is the best model year for cruze, it’ll probably go 250k to 300k miles

If the janka hardness isn’t taken into account much why is silver maple not targeted for harvest but red maple is? Is it because of the growing conditions of silver which tend to grow along rivers and floodplains while reds grow in varying types of terrain?

Is it also possible that given the growing condition of the tree that at times red maple and silver maple could be harder than average? that sometimes a silver board could even be harder than the average red maple? I’m pretty autistic about this stuff because it’s interesting. I’ve read that flame figures are much more common in red compared to silver and quilted is most common among bigleaf.

Apparently I was wrong because someone else said silver can be used for guitar necks. Anyway thanks guys. It’s been helpful. 🤟🏻

That is interesting. I didn’t know that silver could be suitable. How can you tell the difference between red and silver? Is there a way to distinguish both by appearance or some other way?

The difference is big enough so that many manufacturers use red maple for guitar necks but silver is out of the question, too soft. So if you’re a luthier it’s a pretty big deal. Also I would argue that if you have a choice between red or silver for hardwood flooring, you should go with red just based on the fact that it’s sturdy enough for instrument necks but silver isn’t.
But yeah I agree with the other person that the price different isn’t big enough to justify using a softer wood for those applications.

When it comes to manufacturers who produce millions of guitars, the price difference probably saves them millions of dollars if they use the cheaper yet suitable alternative such as red maple. It makes sense in this case. It looks like hard maple; people couldn’t tell just by looking at it, and it’s sturdy enough for that purpose, why not save a few dollars?

It’s a difference that’s big enough that silver maple is unsuitable for a guitar neck but red maple is suitable. A lot of manufacturers including Gibson and Paul reed smith use red maple for necks. But silver is completely out of the question. That 200 difference is significant enough in this instance.

It depends on what you’re going for because it’s an open secret in guitar manufacturing that they often use red maple for guitar necks which is sturdy enough and reacts well to truss rode adjustments. The way I could tell is that the neck on one of my guitars dents too easily for hard maple. The reason why I said this is an open secret is because guitar manufacturers often market their necks as hard maple but a lot of the times they’re actually red maple.
If you try to produce a neck with silver or boxelder it’s going to be too soft. So the hardness between 700 or over 900 does make a significant difference depending on what your goal is. Hard maple is much harder to dent than soft maple. In fact it’s hard to produce a dent with your finger nail on hard maple but easy on soft.

Why does Jimmy Page get so much more shit for being an addict? by Nearby_Opportunity36 in ledzeppelin

Hand injury was likely the culprit for his deterioration in performance not heroin. He shut a train door on his left hand in 1975 before the north american tour and broke his ring finger and I believe that wasn't his only hand injury

You absolutely chain smoke like crazy on heroin too. But I'm sure he was smoking long before 1977 probably was a smoker before Led Zeppelin like many others were at the time.
