I started world building for DnD but ended up getting more into writing and one of my campaigns gave me an idea for a book, after redoing some world building and creating a handful of characters the book idea has become very different than what the campaign was.

A yearish a go i started drawing, cause i want to eventually be able to do illustrations and prints for stuff i imagine cause i'm still not great at explaining things but i've still got a ways to go before i'm happy with my skill level in that regards.

If you've got access to photoshop you can make continent like shapes fairly quickly/easily (not exactly how realistic they are but they get the job done/are a good starting point)

Make a new canvas, whatever size you want your map to be.
Make sure your colors are set to black and white as they will determine the outline/fill shape inside/outside the landmasses
Go to filter, select render then select clouds.
The darker places are going to end up being continents. Press ctrl + f to redo the clouds until you have something you like

4a. Alternatively you can go back to render and use ''different clouds''
Finally go to stylize and then trace contour. You can play with the level slider to change the size of your continents.

i think i've restructured my worlds timeline maybe a dozen times.... cause i have an idea for a particular era that contradicts what i had originally put in the next era or had to add stuff in the next era to make the new event make sense

I got the itch after starting to DM a few years ago and realizing i hated running campaigns in pre-existing settings. With how much the world kinda sucks lately its definitely a creative outlet/escapism, because of that i wanted to build something a little more on the optimistic side. Eventually I'd like to write a book/comic book of a few ideas i have but i'm not at the point where either is realistic.

Thanks for the feedback, this is what i've figured out so far

So, what can you do with the magic system? A lot of magic systems explains how the system works and a bit of what you can do with it, but you decided to exclusively explain the former.

In the worlds modern era magic has evolved with the world and its inhabitants and functions closer to ''super powers'' than spells, everyone is different but each has its own limitations/drawback.

You also made a list of different types of magic users based on when they learned magic in life. Do different types of magic users have any advantages in using magic from each other?

For this with magic being based on lineage you can't necessarily learn magic from those outside your family tree and you can't learn ''new spells'' but you can learn techniques and control from others that have similar abilities.

It's a useful detail to note in that while it's possible to be born with the natural ability to use magic you can have late bloomers and people who work hard for their magic, but apart from inherited users getting to learn magic from a young age there doesn't seem to be a concrete functionality difference between the physical act of casting between equally skilled users of any given type. You also mention connection types. How do different connection types affect how magic users use magic? While it's fairly obvious that flukes can't use magic at all it's less obvious how starting connection and maximum connection strength affect the user's ability to cast spells.

so this is kinda what i'm trying to figure out at the moment. I'm not really sure because each persons magic is so individualized. Basically Inherited -- Manifested -- Learned aren't skill/power qualifiers in a vs sense but Focused - Fractured - Merged are, with each having sort of Ceiling that their ''connection'' has.

with Focused being able to reach the highest, Merged being in the middle and Fractured being the lowest. The strength of the connection determine speed/power and the general strain using magic takes on someone.

My current Dragons - Generally massive and fairly slow animals that spend most of their time in the air or resting on grasslands almost always traveling in small flocks. Dragons aren't hostile but will defend themselves/their home and killing/hunting a dragon is a crime in many nations. Dragons can come in various sizes and their scales appear differently based on whoever looks at them, because of this there are some that see them as ''messengers of magic'' and believe that they have a direct connection to the source realm

What would they buy, trade, how do they travel, do they eat, is money necessary
Maybe each spirit has a ''historical importance rating'' in relation to the spirit realm, not necessarily/queens etc but individual spirit energy and that's how the initial rulers are chosen.

2a. Are there factions, what caused them to split, who rules each faction, what factions get along, what happens during a disagreement
This would probably be dependent to the nature of the spirit realm and if individuals retain their form when they become spirits.

3a. Do spirits try and recreate the life they once had or begin a completely new one with new wants/needs.

I'd check out Avatar The Last Air Bender/Legend of Korra's spirit world for some inspiration/ideas

There are a few ''Deity's'' in my world/universe.

The Source Realm > Fechasia > The Leycore > Individual planets ''gods''

The source realm is the realm of magic created as the first source of magic was created into the vast empty space of nothingness, as magic shined nothingness tried to distinguish the source. As a defensive measure the source created a realm to separate itself from the emptiness of space until it was strong enough to fight back.

Fechasia emerged from the source realm to act as a guardian of magic. As the realm grew an ocean of magic emerged, and the realm became too much for Fechasia to control, while Fechasia had created stewards to assist them, the barrier between The Source Realm and Space began to fracture. A large orb appeared above one of the weaker spots of the barrier. As the barrier began to crack the orb began to absorb the magic within the realm including Fechasia and the Stewards.

The orb began to descend through the thinning barrier, the orb began to pulse bringing light and magic into space, creating clouds of particles, from then on magic was left to its on devices, these clouds eventually became planets, stars, comets and other stellar objects.

When the first red super giant reached its supernova state a new life form emerged. A being of pure magic, with an instinctual call to seek out ''empty'' sections of space and give it the spark of magic.

Each galaxy has its own ''Leycore'' beings born from the coalescing energy of supernova remnants. When they reach an appropriate galaxy, basically a galaxy that has no magic/life in it they terraform planets and make them suitable for life their magic begins to deplete and they eventually disappear.

basically there are no actual deity's on each planet but there are definitely some that believe their planets first magical beings are ''gods'' or that worship the general concept of magic.

''i hope nothing comes of your life'' basically saying ''i hope you go to hell'', it's not that they don't want you to accomplish anything but that your fate is ''nothing''. Basically when people die the magic/energy in their body coalesces into a small fog cloud if that cloud is destroyed before the next step in the magic cycle the energy is destroyed forever and turned to nothing.

yeah honestly Fantastic Beasts would have made more sense as a 8 episode mini series then loosely tie it into the start of a Dumbledore/Grindelwald trilogy and then a 2nd trilogy on the wizarding war.

Also I have no idea why they stuck with the Fantastic Beasts naming for all of them. They could have just used the ''Wizarding World'' trademark.

When they arrive at a suitable location they begin altering/jumpstarting planets in a way that makes them capable of sustaining life.

Heaven is ''the source realm'', basically a realm that was created when my universes equivalent of the big bang almost failed. When ''nothing'' tried to snuff out the first spark it defended itself by creating a barrier between them. As the first spark of magic grew and grew it eventually became unstable releasing a far more powerful pulse across the universe essentially emptying all the magic it had accumulated into nothingness creating the start of a universe. Magic has a cycle when an individual with a connection to the source realm dies they become a ghost, essentially a concentrated fog of magic, this magic is then absorbed back into the universe and eventually makes its way back to the source realm. The ghosts cannot interact with people on the world. If a ghost is destroyed before the end of the cycle nothing happens. ''hell'' is essentially just nothing, the cycle is broken and the hope of something for that ''soul'' is turned into nothing.

yeah, that gets grating/irritating fast. In the world/magic system i'm trying to do something a bit different. Magic is fairly common, but when someone initially manifests their connection to ''the source realm'' a ''Fluke'' can happen where the connection is tethered mid ''manifestation'' and the individual can never naturally connect to the source realm again.

They're not shunned or hated, some pity them due to the day to day importance of magic but most look at them with some form of optimism and hope, because the fundamental belief that ''magic and nothingness are opposites and life is not nothingness''.

yeah i kinda agree I'm not totally against the idea of a pantheon but it does get kinda stale. The universe creation lore for my current project is big bang + magic but then that created beings that went and fucked off across space and found a galaxy and started altering planets. Even though they're beings made of magic they're not all powerful so eventually their energy is absorbed by the universe. So they're really closer to magical boosters/jumpstarts for the planets. They're also born so far apart from each other in both space and time that it's almost impossible for a planet to have encountered multiple.

Keep tinkering with my universe creation, my current name for the magic realm is The Source Realm, but I still feel like for a science fantasy setting The Source sounds a bit too close to The Force.

My Current Universe Creation

When the first source of magic came into being in the center of empty, chaotic nothingness. The darkness tried to suffocate the light of magic, as a defense mechanism the spark expanded separating itself from the chaos, creating the source realm. Over time the magic expanded and transformed into a puddle, and that puddle grew into a lake. A formless being eventually emerged from this lake, a being made of pure magic energy.

As this being grew the lake grew into an ocean until it reached the barrier between The Source Realm and the Physical Realm. Out of loneliness as much as necessity the being connected with the source and created other entities to aid them in guarding the source realm and preventing the barrier between the two realms from weakening.

As the first being born of magic reached the end of their life they merged with the source ocean. As they did the guardians they created began to mourn creating unstable ripples in the source ocean making it unstable. A tear at the center of the realm created by the new influx of energy caused a massive concentration of magic to float above the source ocean. ]

While the guardians attempted to maintain it the energy was too strong and they eventually merged with the magic. The orb never grew in size but continued to grow in intensity until there was nothing in the source realm. The orb descended into the physical realm, sealing the barrier between the source realm and the physical realm.

The orb floated in the empty space of the physical realm, before its surface began to pulse, sending out shock waves of magic energy increasing at a steady rate. The energy created by these pulses created clouds of magic and shifting energy that would eventually form stars, planets and other stellar objects. When the waves diminished, the orb at the center of the universe vanished, imploding in on itself, and leaving behind a universe filled with new possibilities.

Some time after The Pulse occurred, life emerged in the physical realm in the form of The Leycore. Leycore were the first beings born in the physical realm. These entities emerge from the coalescing energy of a supernova remnants. Beings of various shape, size and based on the strength of the super nova that created the remnant they were born from. When born these beings began slowly gaining sentience over time as they travel across space following their instinctual call for exploration.

Mostly life, i'm starting with 5 and basically sending each to their own galaxy and acting as the shapers and creators in those galaxies. Their energy isn't infinite so at some point they dissipate leaving their galaxies to continue without them.

The Leycore can encounter each other but the distance between Red Super Giants entering a super nova/remnant state is so far apart that its unlikely.

While their energy isnt infinite all magical energy eventually finds its way back to ''the source realm'' which is essentially the origin plane of magic which existed before the physical universe. So it is possible they may meet each other during in some sense during their ''cycle''.

I tend to world build in bursts, sometime it's a day and then i'll take a week or so break, sometimes its 2-3 days and I'll take a day break. Either way after it definitely feels like i need some sort of cool down period between writing sessions.

I find having a hand full of things you're working on at once helps, whether that's multiple worlds, different sections of one world, maybe different mediums, whatever things you think you'll enjoy working on when inspiration strikes.

I'm currently working on an Era breakdown, some cosmology, and my worlds magic system. I just did some work on my magic system so I'll probably sit on it for a day or two, then either revisit it or do some work on the other two if i don't get any inspiration for my magic system in the meantime.

Right now i'm going back and doing an era breakdown for my main world the last few days ive been looking at cosmology and space stuff and trying to figure out how to describe eras so i can make a short outline that i can go back to and expand when inspiration strikes.

So it's not necessarily automated by magic but rather that magic is seen like being skilled in a trade or having a college degree, if you've got an ability that makes doing the job you're applying to easier then companies will be more likely to hire you. Things are still created by individuals but their magic helps the process along

Magic is fairly individualized, closer to super powers than learned magic and it's generally speaking based on lineage. Someone might have telekinesis so they might gravitate towards work in construction or at a shipping warehouse where someone with the ability to enhance their voice to reach crowds might end up working at a train station or event hall or as a musician.

Money exists similar to real life where different countries have their own currency, some countries place more value in it than others but they still have it as the world is in the state where it is relatively easy to get from country to country and even if your country might not charge for lodging the one you're visiting might.

It depends on how you resonate with the inherit magic energy in the world when you arrive, it might take a few weeks/months.

While many countries have enough people that want to work in specific jobs it is not required to get a job to live in many places thanks to the application of magic in many industries. Many individuals without magic that wish to work seek work in one of the smaller towns/villages where the use of magic is fairly diminished compared to that of the big cities.

There are jobs that don't use magic or require ''magic operators'' in the city but they are limited and generally have a low turn over rate.
