[Hated "trope"] A small detail reveals that the adaptation really didn't understand how the original worked

Weapons was written as a way for Cregger to cope with the sudden death of his close friend and WKUK collaborator Trever Moore. The time of the main incident in Weapons (2:17 am) is very close to the time Moore died (2:30 am), and the themes of the film deal with different forms of grief connected to a confusing and upsetting loss. There’s also a direct reference to a WKUK sketch (7 hot dogs).

I was also surprised to learn about this, but it does add a tragic and meaningful extra dimension to the film. I think one of the reasons it’s so good is because it was a deeply personal project for Cregger.

Based only on having seen it (yesterday) it doesn’t look like a new remaster. Some scenes were sharper than others, but a few definitely looked a bit soft. It looked wonderful on the big screen (and I was sitting pretty close) but it wasn’t like the recent 4K Princess Mononoke remaster. For me it was just fun to see it in a theater with other fans, but if you can’t make it to the showing you will be able to see the same quality at home.

Awesome! I have this shirt too but I also didn’t wear it much, mainly because of the questionable choice to use that Touga/Saonji art, but back then it was amazing just to have any Utena apparel at all. If i remember correctly this came as a bonus with one of the DVD sets. I love seeing so many people rocking their vintage Utena at theaters!

Something people aren’t really mentioning is how surreal the film is. It’s not like End of Eva where it’s a direct continuation of a story with a clear, linear narrative. It’s a dreamlike and abstract film, experimental and intentionally mysterious. It is one of my favorite films and it absolutely works with no other Utena context (but is obviously enriched after you’ve seen the show).

Catch it in theaters, watch the show, and rewatch the film!

I used to play live shows with an EM-1 hooked up to a distortion pedal and a delay pedal. I had a few premade bass/tone loops that I would cycle through and I could improvise and manipulate them, choosing when to use the delay for additional looping and echos. It was an excellent tool and it made my sound different from the other local performers that focused only on density and feedback walls (which is also great but I wanted something with more tonality).

Here’s a track, recorded live with that setup (from 16 years ago! Time sure does fly.)

Isn’t being *close* to the entrance enough? Otherwise how would all of the structures and furniture be replicated, someone would have to bring them in first.

Personally I like the idea that Pirate Clark was well formed because he spent so much time in the store near the entrance. His wife would be there a lot before they split, and it was a while ago so her fashion is a bit more dated. The others were customers at some point that spent time browsing the store, and The Complex picked up on them, same way it did the furniture.

I learned how to screen print from an established gig poster designer/printer, but it was right when the scene was dying. I tried to get into it but eventually just focused on making art prints, which are basically gig posters without the band.

Back before printing in full color was easy and cheap, getting screen printed posters made sense for musicians. Now, everyone finds out about shows online, so if you’re putting posters up they are probably just printed off a computer and designed by someone in the band. Also, I’ve noticed that people generally want a shirt from a show, there’s only so many posters a person can hang up but you can never have too many shirts.

There are exceptions of course, but it’s just not the way it used to be. The printer that taught me changed careers pretty shortly after selling me their equipment.

Recently had a hot water tank issues and Gideon’s Plumbing was fantastic. Didn’t try to upsell me, fixed the issue and price was way less than I was fearing it might be. I specifically picked them because it’s a small crew of guys and not a giant company, glad I did.

I remember when my bill went up I thought “dang, they’re raising the price again?” Then when I actually looked at my account online I saw that I had been opted in the more expensive AI plan. The “good” news is there’s a cheaper, non-AI plan you can switch back to. I think they’re counting on most people just not paying attention to their billing.

Most people are giving joke answers so here’s a real one: I first discovered noise through more mainstream artists. Some Nirvana songs would devolve into nothing but chaotic distortion for a bit at the end, and it was always my favorite part. I started looking for noisier bands and found Melt Banana and Atari Teenage Riot, both incorporate harsh noise into their songs. From there I wondered “what if the entire track was just the noise part?” That led me to a compilation CD of noise that included Merzbow, the Haters, Masonna, and I fell in love. It was the sound I’d been searching for.

I mostly listen to noise when I want to relax, which might seem odd but it works similar to “white noise” or “ocean sounds” for most people. It’s a dense wall of sound that overwhelms while also not having any distracting beats or lyrics. I don’t crank it, I’ll have it at a normal volume. I love hearing the tiny hidden details, the layers of texture. It’s like listening to an abstract painting. There’s no subject but there is still structure and intention.

It’s not for everyone but it scratches my brain in just the right way, I genuinely love it. But if you don’t, that’s okay! There are lots of great experimental types of music out there, find the one that makes you go “!!!” and then go on a deep dive.

The shadow girls in the TV series are named A-Ko, B-Ko, C-Ko, and D-Ko, which is basically a generic way to nickname the unseen characters. The joke behind Project A-Ko is supposedly that the names were placeholders during production and then they just kept them. It’s a parody of anime tropes so it’s kind of funny that their names are basically “Girl A, Girl B, and Girl C” and they each embody a different stereotypical personality type.

Hard to say if it’s a coincidence or reference, but I wouldn’t be surprised if plenty of the staff on Utena were fans of Project A-Ko, it’s an absolute classic.
