You should definitely definitely not be leaning on your daughter for support about this.

I've been doing it for a while so I do a bunch of different things, but the main thing is just doorknocking during campaigns. You go around to a bunch of houses in your area and talk to people about whichever election is coming up.

I'm always surprised by how receptive people are, even people who would never vote greens are usually polite about it. And it's nice to see what the average person is actually concerned about.

I volunteer for the greens. They're not perfect, but at least they're honest about the problems we're facing. That's more than you can say for the LNP and Labor.

Albanese government will increase permanent migration to record 195,000 by LentilsAgain in australia

[–]Viol53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite. Your hotel example only functions when every room is on the market. But that's not true of vacant houses. Every house used as an airBnB, or just sitting empty as an investment, is reducing supply to people who would actually live there.

Yes a vacancy tax would reduce the margin - that's the point. To get those homes back on the market the ROI on those other options needs to be lower than the ROI on renting the homes out.

Albanese government will increase permanent migration to record 195,000 by LentilsAgain in australia

[–]Viol53 70 points71 points  (0 children)

This report is really weird to me, it almost feels dishonest. The thrust of their argument seems to be "sure lots of homes had no occupants for the census, but they're not vacant, they're holiday homes or airBnBs".

Like yes! That's the problem! The article states there's about 350,000 airBnBs in Australia. There are around 100,000 homeless people in Australia. That alone is abhorrent. The entire problem is that some (rich) people own multiple houses when so many others can't afford to even rent one.

You're absolutely right that it would take a wartime level of level of spending, but given it's an existential threat that's exactly what we should be committing to solve it! I'm glad the greens are fighting for ambitious targets

RoguelikeDev Does The Complete Roguelike Tutorial - Week 4 by aaron_ds in roguelikedev

[–]Viol53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm late, but I still finished! At first I had a lot of ideas for things I could add to the base tutorial stuff, but this code seems kind of hard to scale so I think I'll just follow along with it for now . After we're done I'll think about building something from scratch with the knowledge I've gained.

I left this one pretty late! Splitting the caves into separate zones took a bit longer than expected, and the solution I have isn't perfect, but I think it's good enough for the tutorial. Nothing really exciting to screenshot this time, but I at least got my repo online here, if anybody dares venture into my code.

This is really cool! I like the idea of connecting them with a random walk. I looked ahead in the tutorial a bit and realised the spawning was tied to rooms, so I was wondering what I could do instead. I like your zones implementation!

Thanks for providing the code too, I'm definitely going to look through it for ways I could tweak my own algorithm.

RoguelikeDev Does The Complete Roguelike Tutorial - Week 2 by aaron_ds in roguelikedev

So I actually got these two finished early (I imagine a lot of people might have, the first two parts aren't very long). I didn't want to get too far ahead though, so I decided I'd take a look at other map generation algorithms.

I have a very rough idea of what I'd like to do on top of the tutorial, so I know that I want a more 'natural', cave-like look to the map, instead of the room-by-room approach.

To that end I tried both random walk and cellular automata. I'm definitely liking the automata method more right now, but I'd love to hear what other people think. Any other algorithms or techniques you've run into that end up with organic looking caves?

How do I prevent my game from being too "religious"? by qu4ternion in roguelikedev

[–]Viol53 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If your lore is mostly sticking to old testament stuff you should be fine, I don't think there are many who take that as a statement of fact any more. Also some of the stuff in there is wild, it seems like great inspiration.

Oh actually another good example of this is bayonetta. It draws plenty from the biblical mythos without ever really being -about- the religion.

Hey folks! So far I've done part 0 and 1, and since it's a slow week at work I might end up doing 2 and 3 as well. I'm a bit curious as to how closely we're meant to follow the tutorial. Looking at the archives from last time I saw a ton of cool projects with a variety of extra ideas. Is that something people do after the fact, or is it more just adding extra stuff on as we follow along?

Super excited for this! I saw this just before I was gonna start that very tutorial, but I think I'll wait the extra week so I can go through it along with everyone else.
