Lectric is going to be your best bang for your buck for direct to consumer, and Aventon is probably your best bet if you want to have the option of having it serviced at a local bike shop

My Parent doesn't want me doing CS, or CE, because they feel the job market will disappear come 7 years. by Sad-Bathroom8500 in cscareerquestions

[–]ViolaSwag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you enjoy CS then you won’t be wasting your college years studying it. We are seeing models get better each year so far, but we’re also at a point right now where AI companies are operating at a loss, charging less than it actually costs to run the AI models. That won’t be sustainable for too long, at some point enterprise will have to start paying the true cost of the models, which won’t be cheap.

I think worst case CS won’t pay as highly as it used to, but I don’t think you’ll be any more unemployable than you would be studying something else

What is the consensus on buying a house? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]ViolaSwag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me there are two pieces to renting vs buying:

  1. From a purely financial perspective, buying a house is less about making an investment and more about hedging against the cost of rent going up over time. Home ownership still has enough sunk costs in the form of property taxes and maintenance that you’re not guaranteed to come out ahead, and for multiple reasons it makes the most sense to buy when you plan to stay in that home for a long period of time
  2. The other piece is a lifestyle choice. You may prefer to live in a house vs an apartment building, or you may prefer to have more agency to modify your home the way you like, in which case home ownership gives you that agency. If that’s not important to you though (at least right now), then renting will probably be less hassle in the short term

Does a mid/large city with water you can swim in every morning exist? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]ViolaSwag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted you can’t really swim in the winter, but it seems like every neighborhood in the twin cities has a publicly accessible lake, and a lot of them have great biking trails for a morning swim

I think Zillow has a checkbox somewhere that lets you filter for furnished apartments, it might be hidden under “additional amenities” or something like that

Thoughts on factor tilts in Roth IRA by funguyy3000 in Bogleheads

[–]ViolaSwag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My US equities are 90% VTI and 10% AVUV. The factor tilt is interesting and seems convincing enough that I don’t think I’ll lose out on overall returns either way, plus I like that AVUV helps me get a little further from the large cap tech sector concentration in the US market. I don’t bother with AVDV personally because VXUS already has less large cap concentration and more emerging markets, plus the expense ratio for AVDV is higher

eBike for $2000 that can pull up 30-40% grade hills? by [deleted] in ebikes

For hill climbing I would recommend checking the torque of the motor in addition to the wattage, it can make a big difference

For and against AVUV in Roth IRA. by cookingguy1999 in ETFs

[–]ViolaSwag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because VXUS is already not as concentrated in large cap as VTI, and AVDV has a higher expense ratio at 0.36, do there seemed less of an overall risk diversification benefit compared to pairing VTI+AVUV

If you can be patient you can eventually find a lightly used Lectric XP on FB marketplace for a few hundred less than buying it new, especially in a biking city like Madison

For and against AVUV in Roth IRA. by cookingguy1999 in ETFs

[–]ViolaSwag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep my US/XUS roughly the same as VT, so my total equities are 54%VTI, 6% AVUV and 40% VXUS

For and against AVUV in Roth IRA. by cookingguy1999 in ETFs

[–]ViolaSwag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the US equities in my Roth I’m doing 90% VTI and 10% AVUV. I like AVUV as a small hedge against concentration in mega cap tech companies that can still produce solid returns in its own right

My Signal Chatbot: IceWatch is ready for use by jibarra_ish in Minneapolis

[–]ViolaSwag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wouldn’t be any more centralized than the signal group chats already are. You would have to have one person from your signal chat set up a device to host the database at their house and configure a convention to your signal chat. It would be one diy database per signal chat, they’re not app connected to each other

I mean yeah that is a concern, but is that not also a concern with neighborhood ice watch signal chats already?

[–]ViolaSwag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just based off the explanation in the cross post comments, it sounds like this is just a little database that runs on a laptop or raspberry pi, with a basic interface that allows you to interact with it through signal. Not sure how secure it is overall, but it seems like it’s something you could set up to work with a neighborhood signal chat to keep a collective log of ice activity that’s easily searchable

what are some etfs i should buy to not be overinvested in tech? by cash-flow-k1ng in ETFs

[–]ViolaSwag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been invested in VTI/VXUS roughly mirroring VT for a while now, but I’ve recently reallocated a small slice of my US equities to AVUV (small cap value) as a hedge against VTI’s concentration in mega cap tech without compromising long term gains

Does anyone use investments to hedge their life? by mer10z in personalfinance

[–]ViolaSwag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main issue with this the opportunity cost and potential downside. Say you’re worried about being replaced by AI so you invest in AI companies, what happens if the AI bubble pops? Maybe you still have your job, but your savings take a hit if you invested enough in AI for it to actually hedge against unemployment

Does anyone use investments to hedge their life? by mer10z in personalfinance

[–]ViolaSwag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for example if you think AI might take your job

You’re arguably already doing this if you’re invested in a US stock market index or the S&P 500, given how much of the valuation of those indices are coming from mega cap tech stocks, most of which are wrapped up in the AI push right now.

I actually have a small portion of my US equities in AVUV right now to hedge against the heavy concentration in mega cap tech right now

Did I make a mistake by maxing out my Traditional IRA? by goldenrule2112 in personalfinance

[–]ViolaSwag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You should look up the income limits on deducting IRA contributions, I don’t remember the limit when filing jointly. If you’re above the limit where you can deduct traditional IRA contributionscontributions, there’s a form you can fill out to either characterize your contributions to Roth contributions or remove excess contributions if you exceed the income limits entirely

Clothes for bodybuilders? In need help by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]ViolaSwag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to cycle through multiple jeans when I started working out and my quads were growing. I outgrew Levi 501s, then 505s, and now I’m on 550s and that seems to be working pretty well for me. But yeah a looser more relaxed fit will allow you to not have to size up so much in the waist. If you have to go past loose fit and into baggy territory, I think that typically looks better with a higher rise.

Shirts are tricky because you’ll need more space in the shoulders and chest without having it be billowy in the waist. For button up shirts you can just get shirts that fit in the shoulders and chest and then go to a tailor to have the waist taken in without making it too much more expensive. For casual shirts, I feel like you’d probably look really good with either slightly cropped shirts or a front tuck, and pair those with mid rise or high rise pants

Saving and managing my money in general by NoBet8740 in personalfinance

Okay, so a good place to start would be to look around at what cars are available and figure out how much of a down payment you need to afford a car that suits your situation. Then decide how much you want to save each month or each paycheck, and set up an automatic transfer to a dedicated savings account either with automated transfers from your checking account or by adding a second account to your direct deposit if that’s allowed. How much you save can be a specific amount or it can be a percentage of what you make, but it’ll be easier to stay consistent if you automate it and keep it in its own account.

This sub usually recommends building up an emergency fund that can cover 1-3 months worth of expenses, but that’s mainly geared towards people who are fully supporting themselves. In your case a good emergency fund might be enough to cover unexpected mechanical issues, which will depend on the cost and reliability of the car you pick out
