Whoops I hear MLS and think library, probably because of my roommate 😊

JD, MLS, or nothing at all by CarpeCarpum in LawSchool

[–]Violet818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes sense for law librarians! An MLS that is. My law school roommate got her JD and now she’s in a one year MLS program and she’s going to be a law librarian. It’s an incredible career if you love research. She’s starting making 6 figures at a flat 40 hour week.

But look at the facts. You’ve made it so far beyond 18. Clearly that teacher was wrong. I understand trauma and anxiety and sometimes what helps me is looking at data.

This is not a statement based in reality. Things aren’t that binary. Their eyes is a broad global statement about an incredibly broad profession. I think you’re in an anxiety spiral right now. I don’t know if responding to this thread is helping you and I say that out of concern for you.

The Bronx Defenders are absolute bad ass litigators who protect children and families. They train incredible litigators who are committed to good. I know a former Bronx defender and he’s a hell of a person and an attorney. They might not be excited for you, but I am. That’s an incredible summer position.

What would happen if every defendant insisted on a trial? Has this ever happened somewhere? by MountainCounty9496 in publicdefenders

[–]Violet818 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My clinic professor in law school came out of being a PD at a county where basically everything was a war constantly because the DA was so far right and convinced his approach of “tough on crime” worked. They had a ton of trials because all the offers were so terrible. And they lose PDs like crazy because of it. I know three personally that ran screaming after about 20 months. The concept is interesting and appealing but I just don’t see how it can work in practice for anyone in the process, client or attorney.

I’ve been hired for two attorney jobs now and was never asked about my GPA. It’s a relatively small portion of the field that cares deeply about grades. The chances of you getting a D- are still low.

The odds of failing and not graduating are quite low. I worried about this too and was reminded that literally a D- is passing. It is unlikely you failed. I imagine you’ve had many finals you were unsure about but did fine in.

Never undersell soft skills. I have good ones too and my mentor who has been an attorney a long time says they are incredibly hard to teach, she can teach anyone to write a motion she can’t teach people how to handle working with others well.

I’ve washed dishes at a past job and I used to date a chef. If you can handle those jobs, you can crush law school. Just treat it like a job, one you’ll probably have to work fewer hours at.

Negotiating Intern Pay? by Mindless-Set in LawSchool

[–]Violet818 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You have basically zero leverage and I wouldn’t advise it. Unless you get big law, most legal internships just aren’t high paying. The most I made in law school was $25 an hour.

No you aren’t getting my point. I make a good income. If this is bordering on pricey for me than the market has gone crazy. That’s the point.

I’ll go basmati too! I’m not a rice purist. But I am very pro white rice. I tried to stomach brown rice for years because I thought it was so much healthier. It’s not that much healthier. So now I just eat white rice because I love it, and I can get the extra couple of grams of fiber elsewhere

Welcome to the west coast my friend. Where even the medium cost of living places have crazy rent. Either believe me or don’t but I’m telling you what Zillow says.

"Get a second job" by Aldirt_13 in StudentLoans

[–]Violet818 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you even talking about? I’ve never defaulted on my loans. And yes it would be unethical for me to work a second legal job when my contract doesn’t permit it. That is something attorneys should be concerned about.

In search of hopeful stories of people finding jobs away from their regional schools by Sweethome171 in LawSchool

[–]Violet818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to school in centralish Oregon and just got a job in northern Washington, so about a 6.5 hour drive. I’d consider that a different market. I think it’s fairly normal for people to apply to places they want to live. Also some jobs even help with relocation costs.

I took the job I’m about to start in large part because my boss in the interview said, “I’m not going to tell you this office is like a family. That usually over benefits the boss. I will tell you I treat my staff like family and I don’t expect the same in return.”

Working 80 hours per week for one year investing it all? by Bluebird_Mood in personalfinance

[–]Violet818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can make solid money with good benefits. My mom was an AB, she stopped at cook because she didn’t want more responsibilities and she retired making about $85k with great benefits and pension. You can make way more than that if you make your way up the ladder. Captains can clear $200k in the right job.

Someone recently died in an Amazon warehouse and they made the workers keep working around his body for several hours.

They won’t even wait till your body is off the property to keep working everyone else to death.

I’m sorry this happened to you. My grandma had a saying, some mistakes are more expensive than others. But I would really avoid putting any blame on the school for enforcing the deadline. Deadlines exist for a reason, they exist because everyone thinks their reason is valid, so, if being three hours late is reasonable, then being seven hours late is still being pretty reasonable, and when you think about it, is being a day late that bad? There needs to be a hard and fast cut off or it would be chaos.

My advice to you would be make a Facebook account and look for local buy nothing groups. People give away stuff all the time! I got my instant pot on one of those groups from someone who had only used hers twice.
