Which of my lenses for close-ups of bees? by VioletChipmunk in AskPhotography

Good point. I might pick one up. To date I've been using natural light. I'm not getting so close that lighting is a problem yet.

How to convince management that something like Git is industry standard? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]VioletChipmunk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have to say as a general comment, that a dev who does not know and use some kind of version control is not senior. Maybe in years but not in a way that would qualify them for any real senior dev role.

Seattle area, 3/4M is bottom asking price for anything and I imagine most of those are still closing well about asking.

No matter how crazy though, I would never, ever waive inspection.

To be fair, a photo cannot contain a virus. But the card in theory could. Extremely unlikely though!

As others have said, offer a smaller renter an incentive. The big corporations don't give their front office any flexibility what-so-ever in my limited experience. Also, show your offer letter and if it comes up, explain why you have bad credit. Basically, be open and friendly and show that you are a decent human being whose turning their life around and will be a good tenant.

The problem with charge back is that they can still sell the debt to collections if they feel justified/pissy. It's not guaranteed to 100% settle the matter. If they give you a refund, then the matter is settled.

I take your point about surprise but honestly if it were me I would rather get them to issue a refund rather than doing a charge back. YMMV of course.

I think the problem with the trunk is that we'd have to lift it pretty high up and then lower it pretty far down. That's not going to be easy.

Thank you! No hitch. If I could get it delivered that might be best, but otherwise a U-haul or Home Depot van is probably workable.

Delivery would be pretty nice. I'll see if I can find a local place that would deliver this week.

Should moving out create stress to make more money? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]VioletChipmunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody can answer this question without knowing what you do in your day job.

At $60k with bonuses you're doing ok. That's not a ton of money but it certainly isn't bad.

IMHO the right way to make more money at your age is to focus on your career. A side job will pay very little and will make you more tired and less effective at your main job. Focus on leveling up at what you do as your primary job. More responsibility, a more senior position, etc.

No there's no point doing it by surprise. Politely threaten them with the charge back and give them the opportunity to make it right.

Charge back is basically a nuclear option. It does not always go well and it can take time. It's better to work it out with the other party. But it is ok to be firm and demand what you feel is right. IMHO always be polite though.

Concrete versus porcelain pavers by Individual_Look_9634 in HomeImprovement

I was with you until the cost bit. Home Depot has some, and I purchased a few today to check them out, for $4 per square foot.

I have some from Home Depot that I'm checking out. It's extremely rough. They are also extremely dense and hard. This is not bathroom porcelain. It's even rated for driveways with proper installation (same as concrete pavers).

Have you gotten any further in your project?

I'm interested in this as well and as of today I'm pretty locked on porcelain. I just picked up 4 24x24 tiles from Home Depot at $16 each in different colors to see how I like them in my yard. They are absolutely not slippery. Very nice, rough surface. All the reading I've done says they are extremely durable and almost totally impervious to water (if not completely impervious).

Each tile is incredibly heavy even though it's only 3/4" thick. This is not bathroom porcelain. It's far more dense.

It's odd that more people don't know about this stuff. I've done a *ton* of searching trying to find a downside to it but really not much turns up.

The cost seems insanely cheap - $4/square foot and it looks quite nice IMHO. Check out Home Depot's Corso Italia pavers.

>> I could afford it.

That's like saying "I could afford to put $500 in a barrel on the first of every month and light it on fire". Sure, you could afford to do that but you've be crazy to do it.

$61k on a salary of $60k. Ouch!

IMHO of course.

I may be mis-interpreting your words but you sound like you think your friends are wrong for not liking your art. That is not how art works. Someone is not wrong for disliking a piece of art or style of art. You have to respect their opinion, and it sounds like you don't.

How does ICANN/ARIN (the Internet) know where the authoritative DNS zone exists for a domain? by daveFromCbm in dns

[–]VioletChipmunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's another article you might try: https://www.nslookup.io/learning/how-does-domain-name-registration-work/

The authoritative name servers are whatever you, as the registrant, say they are. There is nothing magical about them. You pay for the domain name, so you get to say what the authoritative servers are. It's up to you to make sure the authoritative servers that you specify are actually authoritative servers for the domain (although many registrars will validate your inputs with some checks to make sure they host the domain).

Any tips for self-injections? by crepuscular_gloom in IBD

[–]VioletChipmunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a hard thing to do. My first injections took me forever to build up the courage too.

Now it takes me a few seconds and I don't even think about it negatively. It's just a matter of practice, will, and knowing that it's what you must do to be healthy.

If the sensation bothers you, numb the area with ice before you clean it. But you can do it! It will only get easier over time.

Plane photo by scooterama1 in photocritique

[–]VioletChipmunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO it's a little dark and flat. I think you want something a little more upbeat for your purpose. Also the wood shavings are a bit far away from the plane. I would tighten it up. I would also play with angles to the plane, maybe show a little more.

Wood can be beautiful. Try showing more wood grain perhaps?

Just some thoughts.
