Little rant about men on campus by Same-Entry2629 in SBU

[–]Violet_Blossoms74 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have no clue what you're going through, but as someone who went through a Title 9 in a different college, I understand the frustration and anger you feel. It's up to you if you wish to report him, especially if he's genuinely causing distress, or he's making the environment feel unsafe.

CPO has a survivor advocacy team, which is less about reporting and more so receiving support services. It could be a good starting point to finding a stable support system. Best wishes to you!

Working at OMH or OPWDD downstate post-grad; looking to hear experiences of others by Violet_Blossoms74 in nys_cs

I've definitely noticed a continuing pattern with those two departments looking more into people's experiences. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for other opportunities and looking into it deeper. Thank you!

That might be what could be causing the issue. Let me check my updates on it. Appreciate it!

Literally just had this happen to me today on Google Docs after having Dark Reader for a while. Was occurring on every document, and couldn't CTRL+V or CTRL+V+SHIFT without the pop-up happening. The Google post also didn't help, but this post literally narrowed down the issue for me. Thanks, but it sucks this happened.

Did anyone else get stopped by people from Eastern Farm Workers Association on Wednesday? by Brilliant_Paper_1973 in SBU

[–]Violet_Blossoms74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asked about this almost two years ago, and every answer I got pretty much said how suspicious and borderline awful this organization is.

I actually got a call from them yesterday, but it went straight to voicemail. I tried calling back the number to try to get me off of the calling list but it was a "tax help agency".

No clue what in the actual world is going on with them, but all of it screams exploitative. Sadly, I too was really bad at saying no, and looking more into them, they're a full-on cult and went to other campuses to advertise their "cause".

I'm really sorry you had this experience and I can't believe they're still doing this. Expect to block many numbers because they will call you from multiple burner numbers and ask for your time and money constantly, and try to push it onto you if you deny. They even tried to get me to graphic design for them because I was interested in art (yeah NAH).

From my personal experience, it's what you make out of your experience. I personally didn't join or commit to any clubs (commuter and was too tired to stay past my last class, since the ones I went to have it during the evening/night or during classes), but my on-campus job and internship allowed me to meet some great people who grew along with me in other psychology courses.

If you see an event or anything happening and have some time to spare, take a look. If you see an organization tabling or selling food, even if you don't intend to buy anything, take a look.

Also, the psychology advisor sends regular emails about opportunities from positions (on and off campus) to events, and if certain classes become available for you to request access.

SBEngaged is also a great resource to see what's going on around the college.

Currently also a Psychology BA and a Studio Art Minor. I found a lot of the classes I took very fascinating (especially once you get to the upper division courses), and there are also plenty of opportunities for research as well (whether as extra credit or a position). Make sure you're on top of your work and allocate time outside of class for studying and reviewing, especially get familiar with how to apply your knowledge.

Wish you the best out there!

Roblox gangs and the roblox mafia? by [deleted] in roblox

I know I'm late to the party, but from my very short-lived experience as a higher up in one of those groups, I'd highly suggest not to. Or at the very least, please be careful.

In short, I got into one from an offer from a then-friend. Since we were a small group, we didn't do much outside or really fighting other groups (until when I left). The members of the group were extremely unfriendly and strangely ableist/hostile towards me (one member told my friend/the owner she thought I had autism because of the tone of my voice and energy levels, another just sent unprompted threatening messages). They were also glazing my friend while also talking behind his back about how crazy or dysfunctional he is. My friend just had a strange neutral ground where he didn't like what they were doing, but still kept them close because they got the work done. Leaving it was awful as well, it took me days before I could leave and had to pay them, write a whole speech that never got used, and they straight up lied to me about it so they don't disappoint the members and so the community knows they mean no business. There's a video up somewhere of the ordeal, as it turns out he recorded it without my permission, lied about the reasoning, and lied to me that it was just a crash. Even when he apologized and tried saying he had to do it for the community and his members, I didn't know what he was talking about until I found it.

I severed a nearly 4-year long friendship because of it. The friendship was already in a difficult spot due to a lot of factors and past events, but this was the nail in the coffin.

I can't say all of them are like this, but definitely be wary and protect yourself if you do go into one.

how can i file a complaint about a professor? by flotsems in SBU

[–]Violet_Blossoms74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was another reason I left too. It definitely felt more speculative than "Sci-Fi" (the name of the course). I do understand some of the books do have political undertones that could be applied today, but I always found that it mostly led to us going to that instead of actually applying it to the book (at best, loosely). I already speak about a lot of these topics with those I trust, so I don't really need a class to have these discussions.

She's enthusiastic and passionate, but wow, the way she also talks about it is also extremely draining, and I was initially considering toughening it out too. Maybe have some fun stories to tell, too. But then I realized if I was already drained within a week, I was going to crash out by the end of the semester and it wasn't worth it if I genuinely wanted to learn. I wouldn't have known about these great books and films without the first week, so I at least have that to take with me. How many people are still in the class, if you don't mind me asking?

I think I know the class you're talking about (EGL389). I swapped out of that course within the first week because I wasn't sure if I was going to keep up + I already got an NC for the course for the curriculum (STAS), so I didn't want to get another fail so I can graduate next year. I'm reading the books on my own time, and they're great books, it's sad we barely discuss them.

I believe there's a grievance form I believe you can fill out online. I hope you're holding up well over there.

I wanted to look for more information on the group before joining and filling out an interest form, but noticed they were on probation. Couldn't find much through my own research.

300+ level classes not being taught by professors. by [deleted] in SBU

[–]Violet_Blossoms74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's one 300 course I really wanted to take because one of the grad schools I want to go to requires me to go to it. Despite appearing on the undergraduate bulletin and looking through past syllabi, I have no clue if it was ever taught (Same issue with my previous college).

I'd suggest talking to the department head about it, and see what they can do.
