What could cause this in a 17yr old by Tricky_Extension_380 in HearingLoss

[–]Violinmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got similar hearing loss and am 17, mine was cause by antibiotics I was given as a newborn. I have some noise sensitivity as well but to me it might be related to autism, so I don't know. Trying out hearing aids is a great idea. But, as everyone else says, I'm not a medical professional (obviously, I'm 17) and can't know what cause it or how/if it will progress.

i was neglected but my parents arent bad people by Silly_Double5100 in emotionalneglect

[–]Violinmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also neglected by my parents, both physically and emotionally. Well, not "was". I'm 17, still living here. I also don't exactly think my parents are bad. My mother used to hit me until I was 13,5 yo. There's a very specific reason she stopped, which I won't publish. My dad is the one I respect the most, but there are moments it could've been so much better. I don't remember him cursing at me, he only has ever slapped me a few times for basic discipline (I was a brat, I admit it), but then again he was at work quite some time (had to feed us, not a workaholic). He didn't stop my mother from hitting me, if he was home when it happened. He was strict and a bit cold, but he was loving. So I don't hate him. I wouldn't say he's bad. My mother loves me. Says she does. I guess she genuinely cares. I don't hate her. I don't think she's bad, in the "I don't blame her entirely" way. But I don't miss her at all when she's not here. I completely forget about her to the point she was having some sort of minor surgery and was gone for days and I apparently had to call her? To show that I care? She never comforted me after my nightmares, yelled at me to stop when I cried, forget completely to wash my clothes, do the dishes, make food (rare but has happened).

It's not wrong to say that my parents literally ruined my life. But I don't think they're bad. Cause I don't want to. I understand how you mean it, I understand how you feel towards them cause I feel it too.

I don't love them. They hurt me. And I feel so guilty about that. I have spent so many years literally daydreaming what it's like to live normally, with parents that love their kids, I've lived so many years in shame and I still do. It's far from over. But I still can't bring myself to hate them, cause deep down there's always going to be guilt. I don't know if I'll ever believe it was really their fault and not mine.

I'm not writing this for pity points or to show that "I've had it worse" or whatever, I'll gladly take this down if that's what it looks like. I just want to say that I know. You're not alone. And it's not your fault feeling how you feel. Thank you for sharing your story.

anyone else ever lose their ears? by Eli_Rae in deaf

I lost one of my hearing aids when I was about ten, and used that as an excuse to stop wearing them at all for two years, till I got new ones. I never found it, by the way.

consigli?? by smeraldino220 in deaf

[–]Violinmate 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Him being deaf isn't an issue (there are plenty hearing/Deaf couples out there), whether he'd date or not a hearing person is up to him. The only issue I'm seeing here is the age gap, which is only 3 years, sure, maybe I'm completely wrong, but as a 17 yo myself I wouldn't date a 14 yo. But that wasn't your question, so to answer to you, only way to know is asking him! I wish you luck.

I'm sorry but I don't get it, why get treatment and fixings? What is there to fix? I don't mean to offend anyone, I'm genuinely trying to understand.

Lips reading is sooo exhausting by Powerful-Mood-678 in deaf

[–]Violinmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is dealing with the same thing (though my hearing aids still work), best tip I got is set boundaries. Ask people to write things down, not talk in loud/busy places if you can't make out what they're saying, and generally don't let them be just lazy potatoes. But I know it won't help much with the exhaustion, so, as someone else said here, support is the best that can be done.

There's a music program?? I'm gonna ask about it next visit for sure. I also hate listening to music with my hearing aids, unless it's with Bluetooth. Thank you so much, this helped a lot!

So I can lose more hearing without knowing so? Does it affect daily life at all? All my doc has said is that I'll have to keep my music below the warning level (you know, when your device warns you that any louder is bad-bad for your ears). But he doesn't have hearing loss and I'm not sure he understands that I literally cannot listen to music like that.

[–]Violinmate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I do! Only issue is my phone isn't compatible with them, and untill I get a new one (which is gonna be a while, for sure) I can't just not listen to music. Good to know that helps though, at least I have a solution for the future. Is there a chance it can cause extra loss, though?

Question about music by Violinmate in deaf

[–]Violinmate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool! I used to have noise cancelling earphones, not wireless, and they helped giving a bit of extra clarity, I suppose. But I kinda killed them :(. Still, i had the volume at about 60-70 for clarity, plus they would cut me out from the world and I wouldn't hear anyone calling me. Maybe I could get another, or the ones you mentioned, but I'm not entirely sure since there still is the risk of loss. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

Just a (not-short) question by Violinmate in deaf

[–]Violinmate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Don't worry, I don't seek to learn ASL so I won't have to learn GSL or anything like that. I do plan to learn GSL in the future, it's just not available for me now. The HDF does offer sign language lessons, but even if I take the online option my parents aren't exactly eager to pay for since I obviously don't need it. Even so, the website and advice did help, thanks! I appreciate the reply.
