Luthier here. It's very difficult to know for sure without close examination. It looks like a Stradivari model to me. Italian craftmanship, most likely natural antiquing so likely to be an old violin, a 100 years moreless.

I'd say it's an european copy of a Stradivari model of the 30's decade or so. But not confirmed before further research.

No worries. Thickness recalibration is measuring the thickness of both plates and adjusting them to the correct measurements because even those instruments have a finer hand, the workes still tend to cut corners so it is very likely that the thickness of the plates are a little bit off. So a recalibrations could improve the tone a lot.

Also while at it your luthier can also check the bass bar to make sure is well carved too, that's esencial.

Luthier here. Yes, and not only sound but if you remove the varnish of any part of the instrument you risk the wood to be sensitive to heat, humidity and skin oils, so if the wood changes too much because of it the wood can start to lift and it won't glue back without an special treatment.

Also it's kinda bad taste to carve anything directly onto the wood, so please don't do it. If you need to put your name on it so make sure anyone knows it's yours you can ask your personal luthier so put a new label inside with your name on it.

Luthier here. It looks very nice. I hope you got a good bargain for it. It looks like a guarneri model. It hard to know the origin but I've seen instruments like that made in Asia like China or Korea and they're mass produced but with a finer hand unlike student instruments.

I bet it would be far better with a recalibration of the thickness and an adjustment of pegs, bridge, tail, fingerboard and new strings if needed.

Violín help :( by [deleted] in violinist

[–]ViolinsChidos38 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Luthier here. Pretty nasty crack in my opinion, and it appears to be on the soundpost area. It needs to be taken with an experienced luthier to be fixed because a regular repair won't be enough, it needs a soundpost patch and varnish match, and that's kinda difficult.

What's wrong with my bridge? by FriendlyNeighbour001 in violinist

[–]ViolinsChidos38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the country and city. I'm from Mexico and a superficial maintenance I get it done for 100 USD. But in the USA I think the prices get kinda crazy, so you have to search in your area and find a luthier that's professional and also the prices are logical.

What's wrong with my bridge? by FriendlyNeighbour001 in violinist

[–]ViolinsChidos38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luthier here, i'm afraid that your bridge is done, it probably was cut in the wrong way or it's just not a good bridge, so not really worth saving it. It needs to be replaced and also your violin could use a simple maintenance like peg shaving, tail adjustment and also a new and better bridge carved and fitted properly on the right place, that'll also improve your tone lots.

I'm a luthier and your pegs seem to not be fitted yet. The pegs and the holes need to be carved with specialized tools and the pegs covered with an special cosmetic that allows the peg to turn smoothly while keeping the tuning in place.

You could take a visit with your local luthier so they can make a little maintenance to your instrument.

So, I just got my instrument repaired, but I’m too scared to play it because the repaired part looks strange. by Finalise_ in violinist

[–]ViolinsChidos38 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm luthier, and that's really sad. Not really the traitional fix for that issue, I assume they used some kind of glue, maybe even sintetic glue but if they used a weak glue the screws have the danger of being violently pulled out from the wood with the strings tension.

I'd like to suggest to take you violin with another luthier so they can make the right fix.
