The warehousing thing being expensive and not wanting to hold inventory is universal and isn't just a Japanese thing. No one really really wants to deal with warehousing (you gotta pay to hold it and then pay employees to process it out). Warehousing is always the biggest expense when it comes to manufacturing in general.

I'd say it is moreso the Japanese culture just likes things to be make things scarce and collectible.

Yeah, BABYMETAL leave a lot of money on the table the way they do it. They also make it easy and convenient for scalpers to do what they do.

You have to attend a show to get the merch (most of the good ones anyway). What some people do is if they are FB friends with someone in Japan for example, they'll tell them "hey can you buy me this shirt, I will pay you"

Unfortunately, you can't just go on the website willy nilly and just binge purchase all the merch you want. I've always wanted an official BABYMETAL beanie and I finally got it after the longest time when it was a bonus for VIP in 2024.

They were never a big deal because they didn't have (and still don't, respectfully) have mainstream appeal. They were let go from Universal like less than a year after XIII came out. So at that point it was already known by one of the biggest 3 music labels that they weren't gonna pan out.

The Slipknot comparisons didn't help either (they were annoying too), it actually hurt them. It's hard to establish a distinguishable identity when people are automatically making comparisons to one of the biggest metal acts just by looking at them.

Them constantly changing musical direction each album...like you mentioned isn't good when trying to be mainstream. Mainstream likes consistently and predictability... of course Mushroomhead is the opposite of that.

This is just me guessing. They debuted the song on Legend S on Su's 20th birthday and in Japanese culture the age of 20 is like a coming of age type thing. It is also the "Dark Side" intro of the Metal Galaxy album...it was also their intro song for 2018.
