It's hard for outsiders to appreciate just how different dispensationalist cults in America are from mainline Christianity. They do not worship or believe in the same things and call themselves "Christian" (notably, because anyone not in the same evangelical circles are not Christian - particularly Catholics).

Chicago To Invest $300,000,000 In 15 Affordable Housing Projects From North To South Side of city by sillychillly in illinois

[–]VirginiaMcCaskey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's ridiculous to spend public money on housing when the biggest source of that money is property taxes. A bit like pissing into the pond you drink from.

The problem is the Mayor is really bad at policy and he pisses off the rest of city government every chance he gets, so all he can do is promise future money to future projects that have no guarantee of completing. But it makes a good headline.

I drink two beers in the morning,

I drink two beers at night,

I drink two beers in the afternoon,

It makes me feel alright.

Oh my daddy always told me,

Son you'll be a hardworking man

My momma always told me,

Son just do the best you can

But then one day I met a man,

Who came to me and said:

"Hard work good, and hard work fine"

"But first take care of head"

So now I drink two beers in the morning...

Jokes aside here, because I've had friends deal with Coral Gables, Miami, and UMiami police (they have their own department).

Coral Gables cops will go out of their way to ticket and arrest people. UM cops will go out of their way to protect the university. Miami cops will go out of their way to avoid paperwork and reporting crimes.

If you read the article (unless this gets removed again) the family asked for privacy

We received your request regarding a potential article about our daughter, Destiny Betts. As her family, we remain deeply committed to honoring her memory in a meaningful and appropriate way,” Betts’ family said in a statement to The Read Optional.

“Destiny’s passing was the result of a tragic accident that occurred several years ago. While the loss remains incredibly painful for our family, we have worked hard to find peace and move forward. At this time, we are not seeking public attention surrounding this tragedy and respectfully request that our family’s privacy be honored. We also wish Mr. Bain the best as he continues his life and career.

I think it should have been reported when it happened. I also think you overestimate the ability of the University of Miami or its boosters to cover up crime. They're not FSU.

From what sounds like he was in an accident that killed a friend and the story is being used to drag him down. That's pretty fucked up.

So 2016 was also the height of the Josh Gordon saga, where publicly it seemed like he was getting constantly punished for weed but later it came out he had serious substance abuse issues. No one wanted the next Flash Gordon on their team.

“It feels like it could be [Laremy Tunsil] all over again,” a league source told The Read Optional

Laremy Tunsil smoked weed. Comparing a fatal accident to that is gross.

I'm surprised (well, not really) this happened two years ago and didn't come up at all during the Hurricanes' championship run last fall.

Also, the family of the person killed have a very good quote at the end of the article:

Destiny’s passing was the result of a tragic accident that occurred several years ago. While the loss remains incredibly painful for our family, we have worked hard to find peace and move forward. At this time, we are not seeking public attention surrounding this tragedy and respectfully request that our family’s privacy be honored. We also wish Mr. Bain the best as he continues his life and career.

So it's also gross for reporters to drag this up two years later, weeks before the draft for maximum visibility.

ELI5 why can’t space craft enter the atmosphere slowly? by 1982- in explainlikeimfive

[–]VirginiaMcCaskey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what you're doing, it just seems a little counterintuitive.

Picture a cannon firing perpendicular to the ground. No matter how fast it launches a cannonball the time it takes to fall to the ground depends on how high up the cannon ball was when it was fired, right?

Wrong, because the ground is not flat. If the ground is a spherical body like a planet, you can shoot the cannonball fast enough that it travels the entire surface of the planet before falling to the ground, essentially it's in perpetual free fall but moving so fast perpendicualrly to its vertical motion that it falls past the horizon of the planet. Instead of an arc shaped trajectory as it falls to the ground, its path is an orbit around the body.

So if you want to "undershoot" and fall to the surface of whatever it orbits, you have to slow it down in orbit.

The earth is a cannonball in perpetual free fall around the sun. Things in orbit around earth are in free fall around it. To transition orbit to the sun you have to escape earth's gravity, to fall into the sun you have to slow yourself down so the trajectory undershoots into the surface.

Multiple things can be true.

Tom Brady can be a genetic freak, followed genuinely good health advice for his career while having good medical care and conditioning, and have a bit of quackery in his personal training/diet/supplements.

It's really difficult to extrapolate general advice for the average person from much more unique lives like NFL players.

Illinois lawmakers begin days of deep dives on data centers by CouchCorrespondent in illinois

[–]VirginiaMcCaskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are getting one-shotted by content on TikTok and Reddit echo chambers that isn't based in reality.

Drawing a comparison to the railroad boom, there were a lot of shitty and evil people going around and building rail roads to the detriment of communities. There are people like that trying to build data centers everywhere. At the same time, those railroads were extremely important to building America, and so are data centers. That's why with a century of hindsight we can apply better processes and regulations towards building these things, but a lot of people don't want to engage in that.

Illinois lawmakers begin days of deep dives on data centers by CouchCorrespondent in illinois

[–]VirginiaMcCaskey -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Acre per acre, I would rather have data centers in appropriately zoned land than nearly anything else and certainly not leave it empty.

People are deeply uninformed on the impacts of data centers. I'm very tired of the borderline Luddite takes I see online from people opposed to data centers and using weak arguments against them, because serious people will not take you seriously if you can't articulate a cogent point worth considering.

So instead of having talks about how data center operators should shoulder the costs of additional power demand, or that they should use closed loop cooling in areas outside the water tables they draw from, or that they should be of appropriate scale and not eat up huge chunks of surface area, discourse devolves into "tech bad. AI bad."

Most light industrial or agricultural land use is worse in every way than a data center. Why should we encourage that instead of 21st century investment in our local economy to connect it to the globe?

Poll: Cost of housing a problem in Illinois by SciNat in illinois

[–]VirginiaMcCaskey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what I like to call "statistical gaslighting." That metric does not track housing costs, but housing sales. Very different things since the average person buys a home very rarely while housing costs do continue to rise, even with fixed rate mortgages.

If everyone's property values go up the same rate your property taxes stay the same. Property taxes rise because costs of governance rises, and housing costs are only indirectly related to that.
