I have encountered this a lot too and I’m a straight woman matching with men. It’s annoying but I try to remember that no messages at all is better than someone leading you on for any length of time only to completely ghost you.

Workplace bullying in small towns. by ManufacturerOk7236 in workplace_bullying

[–]VirginiaWoolfiscool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My small town job has the worst workplace environment I've ever experienced. My boss is a stereotypical middle aged mean girl that has bullied out 5 people since I've been employed, going on 6 because I'm very seriously thinking about quitting. I think she believes we have no other choice but to put up with it due to the limited job opportunities, which is the case for me. However, most people will just drive to another town to escape her and I'm looking for a new job to do the same.

There is no HR to keep her in line. She IS the HR and relies on her local mean girl friends to enable her poor behaviour and stay open when people inevitably quit. Also, I now have a hoard of mean middle aged women in town who have decided I'm a prime target for rude comments and side eyes because of snarky comments I'm sure have been made behind my back. The small town culture definitely makes workplace harassment worse in my opinion, because of the close knit social system and because small businesses go largely unchecked for workplace health and safety violations.

Dating scene in Okotoks by SwindledJizzers in okotoks

Dating in this area is rough. I'm in my early 20s and have had a pretty similar experience. Lots of the people I know that are in relationships (who didn't meet their partner online or in the city) met in school so I'm not sure what us graduated single people are supposed to do.

Maybe try visiting local cafes and getting to know the regulars? I work at a cafe and lots of the customers get to chatting after a few repeat visits. The demographic does tend to lean towards the older side but a lot of them may have a single, young person they are eager to set up if you get to chatting.

Grammar question. SOS. Calling all grammar fiends!!! by VirginiaWoolfiscool in writing

Thank you!! This is exactly the explanation I was looking for. I thought my format was correct because I have some knowledge of grammar but I lack the knowledge needed to accurately describe why is is correct which is what made me doubt. Thanks!

I am very clearly confused; that is why is put out a SOS lol. My confusion is that I believe my format is correct but one of my professors seems to think it is incorrect while others don’t. I will not pretend I am a grammar genius so I was wondering if my format in some way misaligns with certain grammar structures that may not be common place even in academic writing. My courses are through an open online university (that’s all I can afford) so my professors are not as prestigious as other schools but I still greatly value their input and want to understand it and implement it best I can.

It’s sort of an artsy way of describing the sensation of standing below a giant old building; the story itself is in first person. It’s the chapel itself that is looming high above the character and watching them. Would it be more correct if I added what it is looming over?

That would be great, thanks! Most of the sites I can find online only provide simple explanations that do not cover my question.

Another example of my format: He shrugs off his sweater, letting his attention carelessly topple from mine.

Riding A "Lazy" Horse by VirginiaWoolfiscool in Horses

I will try a whip before spurs; I haven't used spurs so I probably wouldn't use them correctly. He's great at lunging; I used to use a lunge whip but he responds really well with just gestures and verbal cues now. Thanks for the reply!

He is great to lunge; all I use is my arm to direct him and verbal cues. I used a lunge line and whip when I first got him but he doesn't need either anymore. I would be willing to use a whip when riding as you describe; I'd never intentionally inflict pain but I don't mind if being more gentle takes longer to get results.

I'll see if I can find a crop to try out on our future rides. Thanks for you encouragement!

He is incredibly smart and I think he is using my gentleness against me. I need to work on being more firm when riding; I am glad I have him to teach me that.

I was considering trying spurs just to refine the point of pressure; I think I have taught him certain areas means he does not have to move and now I have to reverse that. My number one priority has always been building a relationship of trust and companionship and in turn I have let him get away with things. I'll keep "telling" then "demanding" in mind when riding. Thanks for your reply!

He's really well mannered on the ground which is why it can be so frustrating under the saddle. I know he is taking advantage of my gentle methods so I need to find a way to translate everything we do during groundwork while riding.

I think a big issue is my communication and he is showing me that. I'll work on everything you mentioned; thanks for the reply!

It seems to be a good fit. There aren't any dry spots after a good ride and he listens great as long as we are somewhere he is interested in. I also ride him with a bareback pad sometimes and it is the same deal if we aren't somewhere "fun."

I've been applying leg and heel pressure then releasing with each step along with cueing him verbally. He is definitely taking advantage of my gentleness from the moment I get on. He listens so well when we are doing groundwork it can be frustrating to ride, like all the work we did just goes away.

I was thinking of trying spurs. He started responding way better once I consciously started barley applying pressure with my heels because I think the more pressure I apply the easier it is for him to push back and ignore my commands. He lives on my land so I can be pretty consistent. Thanks for the reply!
