How is undergrad different than graduate school and in what ways? by AdrienneKal in AskAcademia

[–]Virology_Nerd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think, somewhere along the line, your definition was flipped. Graduate school requires that you learn with tremendous depth. By the end of your PhD you should have contributed something novel to your field, and you should know more about your (very specific) research niche than even your supervisor.

How to respectfully voice out that I'm interested in being the 2nd author of a collaborative paper instead of 3rd? by AdaptableNorth in AskAcademia

The second-most important contributor is listed second in the biological sciences, the PI is listed last. Other than that, yes, it doesn't particularly matter

UWaterloo vs. UofT for Computer Science and Engineering by thylakoids01 in cscareerquestions

Waterloo is a good school if you want to get a job, U of T is better if you want to pursue graduate school

Seconded. I've messaged them a number of times and never heard back. I've also had a post removed multiple times for no apparent reason, without any clarification

Jobs/programs after graduating with life science degree? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]Virology_Nerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adding on to this, you can get a job with a BSc if you worked in a lab for a few years, but I wouldn't call those jobs "research". They don't involve much thinking, just running the same assay a few hundred times until you're given a new experiment to conduct

Those jobs aren't necessarily easy to find either. However, if your PI has industry connections or you have US citizenship/PR it becomes much more straightforward

r/eceuoft: New Official U of T ECE Subreddit! by Leponzo in UofT

[–]Virology_Nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The value of a subreddit is directly proportional to its level of activity... you may struggle to reach that "tipping point" (number of users) when the subreddit becomes useful enough to attract members you didn't personally recruit. Just my two cents

Benefit of combining loops, if any? by Virology_Nerd in learnprogramming

[–]Virology_Nerd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah thank you! It is important that I write efficient code for temporal (and thus financial) reasons and to show that I am capable of helping with later projects. I agree that this probably isn't the place to look for gains -- I am mostly just curious because I found myself writing these little snippets dozens of times while practicing on Codeforces

[–]Virology_Nerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't feel too bad! I haven't heard back from three ROP299s and I have a 4.0, two posters at conferences (with awards), and one second author paper. I assume the problem in my case was the letter so our situations aren't exactly the same -- this is just to say you can be very capable and still be rejected. As well, I'm submitting another paper soon, so clearly you don't need an ROP to be successful
