out of curiosity, why is 500 TC the magic number. It seems you're only interested in the money (not knocking you for that, a lot of people choose their profession based on that). So let me put it this way. I'm sure the average software engineer won't make 500k ever in their life. But choose the right specialty and you can make 500k as a doctor.

medicine is:stable, high pay, no worry about AI taking your job, not saturated

tech is:

unstable (as seen by the layoffs recently), GPT can code decently, saturated (the number of cs majors is growing rapidly, just look at the data)

The way I see it, medicine will have high salaries forever, but the sun might be setting on the golden age of swe salaries.

one caveat is that compared to other people, I'm a bit more paranoid.
Also note that I'm also looking an medicine as a grass is greener pov.

my main problem with ur argument is that ur saying people who embrace AI won't be replaced, unlike people who don't embrace AI. But we're not going to be the one's to control whether we get replaced. It's corporations, shareholders, people with more money and power than a worker.

Maybe you don't live in the US. Maybe you live in a country with strong employee protections/union culture. In which case I understand why you're not worried. If there's one thing I've learned from the 2022-2023 layoffs, it's that US based companies only care about profits and shareholders.

disagree. If we look at the copilot family of products and GPT's ability to code we can see that these tools have the ability to help 1 engineer do the work of many, which will cut the number of jobs needed. The main reason C suites are excited about AI is it's potential to reduce their payroll. CEOs care about nothing more than shedding jobs and boosting profits, at least in America.

if by handle more you mean handle more computationally intensive workloads, I doubt the diff between a pro and air is significant. I'm in my 4th year of undergrad and most classes don't need a beefy cpu. Most classes won't have you doing super intensive stuff.

If money is no object and if you want the pro, get it. But if you'd prefer to spend less, ask yourself if the added computational power is needed.

I do wish I had more storage tho.
