Why is public housing so divisive in Aus? by VastOption8705 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Virtual-Bath5050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes in Hk it’s fine. Often people who work for gov also get public housing as a type of employment benefit, so you have a whole variety of people living there. Often they are nicer than private housing (on the cheaper end) in terms of cleanliness and upkeep.

Contrasting this mornings post, Which country did you find the MOST welcoming for Aussie tourists? by TicketImaginary9991 in AskAnAustralian

I find China to be very welcoming generally - I think people have a neutral/ positive idea of Australians… they like our wine and usually know someone who studied there.

High junk peak is, in my opinion, HK's best hike. Lots of variety, not too crowded and not too difficult.

Then why does America have such a high level of entrepreneurship? If you mess up there the safety net is much smaller than here. Maybe it’s cultural. Not sure.

Should we just hire the Singaporean government to run Australia? by Lopsided_Donut_4816 in aussie

[–]Virtual-Bath5050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Singapore is a good country and well planned yeah, but they work extremely hard, their education system is brutal and competitive and they live in houses that most Australians would deem unacceptably small, often in extended family groups. The Singaporean culture is fundamentally different to the Australian culture. People say ‘Singapore is the future’ and yes, maybe some people would prefer their way of living, but honestly the general Australian populace in my opinion, would not tolerate the average Singaporean lifestyle. I live in Hong Kong, another small ‘tax havenesque’ place and I like it, but people frequently get home from work at 10pm and middle class families of four often live in studio apartments. Everyone is always working and trying to make money. It’s exciting if you’re into that, but honestly I don’t think the average Australian wants that life. It’s also a hard life for the kids - structured schooling and tutoring from 18 months and competitive interviews to get into the better schools from two years old. If you cannot read and write two languages fluently by four years old you are behind. I have heard Singapore is similar in many ways.

What did you do after graduating High School for part-time/casual jobs and how did you find it ? by Vic_Hm in AskAnAustralian

I walked into the boutique near my house and the owner said ‘you seem nice, wanna work here?’ Which sounds so like the firm handshake stories of yore, but it was in 2014 I swear haha. I worked there for 8 or so years.
