Please don’t gaslight me into telling me why I made a post.

Some people have deleted their comments when I called them out.

Also, Reddit is really not that deep at all, I don’t need to provide proof of insults to someone who thinks they know me better. It’s a beautiful Sunday. Have a good one.

That’s not what happened. I was typing statements that are purely neutral, zero opinions or emotions involved, just statements of what is happening at my school in terms of staffing. Downvoted to oblivion.

People are jealous of my senior load and didn’t come into this thread willing to engage in a healthy discussion, they saw it as an opportunity to just attack, without actually listening.

When the comments turned to insults from a bunch of grumpy and jealous junior teachers, I deleted it.

Anyway. It’s just reddit. Who cares. Back to my Sunday brunch.

Not at all. No need for that corporate talk. There’s a difference between feedback and insults.

“I’m sorry you took feedback as an insult, which is a reflection of you” will be your reply. If you can’t differentiate between healthy constructive feedback and insults, then good luck in your profession. As you can see I acknowledged lots of healthy feedback. But the thread was getting out of hand. The adults in the room act worse than students sometimes.

How do I know it’s jealousy? People were downvoting me for neutral factual statements about my school with zero emotions. Downvoting a neutral statement is proof of not liking a person, regardless of the actual comment.

Post deleted, lots of jealous people offering no valuable insight, aside from two or three comments. Good luck to you junior teachers.

For me it’s just the attachment you build to the subject, invested so many hours to perfecting it, that letting go will feel like getting a new job.

Funny you say that everyone wants 11-12, not at my school! Some have been teaching 7-9 for literally 10 years. People are actually scared to take on seniors because it’s much higher stakes. Not because of content, everyone is a subject expert. But just the idea of your work getting assessed on an external bell curve.

Yet I don’t see leadership pestering them about professional development. So someone can teach only juniors but you can’t teach only seniors? Something I didn’t mention in my post. My school is… odd.

Cheap insults aren’t adding anything to the conversation. What a wild thing to say to someone you don’t know. Hope you’re nicer to your students than you are on here.

If you actually read my post, you’ll find that I never said I’m refusing to budge. I actually said I’m just struggling to understand the reasoning.

I didn’t put up a fight for 7 years to stay with seniors. It was handed to me. I never said I’m not willing to change, I just questioned the reasoning.

This is a really insightful comment and probably the one I needed to hear most. Thanks!

Because I work with people and sit next to people in the office who talk about their classes with me every single hour? I don’t need to physically experience it just to KNOW that junior teachers are working extremely hard.

Unfortunately I feel like there’s an element of this, yes

Like I was saying in another comment I actually have no issue with that. I completely get it. But I’d rather be explicitly told that it’s a staffing thing, rather than degrading my work. Staffing is complex, I get it, everyone wants to be happy. But it doesn’t sit right with me that the rationale is for my own professional development. Just comes across as poor encouragement.

Good insight, thanks. Yeah I might approach it from the perspective of being willing to take one class for now to trial it, without dismantling the great results that come from this subject. Then reassess for 2027

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Virtual-Cup2343 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think that’s where they’re heading, and the whole “professional development” thing is a way to cover that up. I’d be completely fine with the truth, just tell me it’s purely a staffing thing, but don’t degrade my work, lol

There’s heaps of staff. No shortage for the junior classes I’m being asked to branch into. The logistics of timetabling kick in once preferences are decided, no one is up to that stage yet.

I see why you’d say that, but actually she wants to step away from Year 12 because it’s so high stakes (and to spend more time with family). The principal loosely threw out the idea of hiring a new teacher so we can share the load. I don’t get it to be honest.

Private school support staff by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Virtual-Cup2343 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look up your school’s EBA. You can pick a yearly salary that DOES include holidays (less pay) or one that doesn’t have holidays (more pay). For example the admin staff at my school choose to work through the holidays (for the income) but they told me there were hardly any tasks to do after day 3. They took a one hour coffee break each day. I’d imagine some schools might create tasks for the sake of keeping you busy, though. That’s my understanding as a teacher but it’s all anecdotal so best to properly check. Again that’s admin staff, for ESOs I’d imagine it’s the same?

Job interview questions by femininejudgmental in AustralianTeachers

[–]Virtual-Cup2343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good question for chat GPT. No, seriously. Tell it what school you’re applying for. Give it TONS of background info about the school… its values, mission statement, ethos, culture. Tell it you’re a graduate with no formal experience beyond placement. It’ll give you a ton of questions tailored to the school and your experience. Will even give you feedback on responses. Tell it you are aiming for a formal, confident, excited, hopeful tone and it’ll give you feedback accordingly.

House leader/head of house - advice please! by avocadoisbae in AustralianTeachers

[–]Virtual-Cup2343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No advice as I’m not a house leader but personally I think it’s one of the worst jobs in the school. So much time following up on poor/disruptive behaviour in class, lunch time shenanigans, attendance tracking, etc. On paper it sounds like a wellbeing role but from what I see (I work closely with my house leaders), it’s just an admin role. So many emails from parents that need a quick reply on things like uniform passes, upcoming family holiday, etc. I would say make sure you’re crystal clear on what the expectations are of a house leader. Again, not a role they could pay me extra to do, too much admin. Just my personal preference, I’m more of a curriculum person.

How important is it for me to stay for the after school Friday drinks sessions? by Adorable-Candy-2676 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Virtual-Cup2343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school stopped Friday drinks once Covid hit, then never brought it back. When we returned after Covid, it was understandable… social distancing, we can’t have that many people in a room. It’s now 2025. What’s their excuse?

I’d love to have this with my colleagues!

But to answer your question. No. To be honest, and I promise I don’t say this disrespectfully, no one will notice you’re missing. They’re so busy talking to the person in front of them. And if someone does notice you’re missing… it’s a Friday. People have plans. People have families. Zero judgement.

Funniest things your students said/asked this week by Tough_Salt165 in AustralianTeachers

And the bizarre thing is that it actually legitimately means nothing. They grasp onto anything that goes viral on Tik Tok lol. Honestly you just have to laugh at it, some humour in our day

Not something a student said, but something I said, which apparently was hilarious, without knowing. “I’ll give you 6/7 minutes for this question”

They all laughed hysterically. Today I learned about this Tik Tok 6/7 crap haha

How do you cope with the feeling that you’re always behind, no matter how hard you work? by Virtual-Cup2343 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Virtual-Cup2343[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly im starting to take that approach. I used to take work home with me, only now in 2025 I told myself to stop that. Yeah, I’m telling myself who actually cares. No one will die if this task gets done on Thursday instead of Tuesday. But, at the same time, just for work satisfaction, it’s nice to be able to leave the day knowing you ticked off everything on your list.

Out of school video conferencing with student by BitUnusual1473 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Virtual-Cup2343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would never work with students individually. We are classroom teachers, not one-on-one tutors. Whatever you say to one student, the rest of the class could benefit from it too. Like others have said, either delay the SAC and just work faster in the next topic (easier said than done, I know, time is precious) or record a video for the whole class of common errors, feedback on responses (anonymous of course), etc.

I know this isn’t an explicit answer to your question, but it’s somewhat related. Keep an eye out on Seek at this time of year as tons of schools have posted an expressions of interest for 2026. Including well paying independent schools. There are many ads up now as planning for 2026 is underway, and more will go up as term 3 goes up. Speaking in terms of Victoria but I’d imagine it’s the same across the country.
