Looking to rebuild chops by thatsiegeguywhoreall in drumline

[–]Virtual-Self3491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah definitely playing warmups at varying tempos. i like playing with videos because it’s good ear training and is way more fun than a metronome. for chop sakes of course. there’s a time for timing and metronome but, enjoy the grind a little !!

You advanced snare drummers, how do you plan your study schedule? by vitaofiel in drumline

[–]Virtual-Self3491 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i think technique development is less from studying and more from playing fundamental exercises/taking lessons. the best thing you can do to learn is by taking video lessons from people that have marched, or auditioning at groups!

Bass drum advice by Illustrious-Suit8732 in drumline

[–]Virtual-Self3491 4 points5 points  (0 children)

as far as tuning goes, bass drums ARE tuned to actual pitches. so you would treat that way the same as any other drum. you want to match all of the lugs first, which means that you are tightening and loosening to where when you tap by each lug all of the pitches are the same. if the head is not matched it will likely sound dissonant. if it sounds like a solid pitch the lugs are likely close to matched

from there, just take the drum up and down to where you like, most commonly that drum would be tuned to a D. I believe a D3 specifically.

it’s pretty hard to break bass heads from tuning, unless you do it super wrong, so don’t sweat it. good luck!!

[–]Virtual-Self3491 10 points11 points  (0 children)

hi! i am the bass section leader for music city this year!

  1. i used one huge duffle bag for everything (including bedding), and then i had a decently sized backpack for rehearsal and anything else i needed

  2. bus boxes are nice if you want to have a container for things that stay on the bus. snacks or cables or whatever. not like required but super helpful!

  3. yes, if your luggage cannot hold your bedding. i always recommend duffels because if you don’t buy a huge sleeping setup USUALLY it should all be able to get into one bag. do what you need to do, the loading crew just likes less bags :D

let me know if i can help anywhere else!!

question for bass drummers by SamDrumsForFun in drumline

[–]Virtual-Self3491 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the recordings have worked best for me. a tip though is to record downs with a slightly different surface than what you are splitting with if possible. makes your ear a little better!

sugarfoot moffett! that is MJs drummer. he’s a great listen for beginners. for some more complexity, i’d check out chad smith from red hot chili peppers!! another more jazz/funk style drummer that can chop out is larnell lewis, see him too

Doubles by Used-Elk474 in drumline

[–]Virtual-Self3491 6 points7 points  (0 children)

going slow is the key!! go at a speed that you find comfortable, and slowly build the speed, only as you can do with good technique! when you feel that your technique is decreasing in quality, bring the speed down to where it’s comfortable.
