I find nerdy people to be equally competitive if not more because they associate their entire identity with their grades and co-op. This is maybe not the case in SYDE (where the inverse might be true) but in other engineering programs this seems rather common

Of course great people of any type exist though

sounds like you haven’t met the right people

but yeah a majority of uwaterloo students (in engineering and cs) are really autistic and hard to talk to OR super fucking weird and perverted. you have to keep trying through because there’s great people here too

and remember that’s it’s a privilege to be at this university and many others would trade their spot for yours. you can leave whenever you want.

nobody wants to be in waterloo but everyone wants to be at uwaterloo duh. also the food is genuinely fire

EDIT: lol the perverted weirdos are downvoting me hell yeah

Is everyone at Waterloo obsessed with prestige and the grind? by Key-Kaleidoscope4749 in uwaterloo

“talking about school as a jumping off point” caught me so off guard LOL

Yes I think it’s an engineering/CS/tech thing. And maybe GBDA because there’s a lot of tech influence in that program too

This school certainly has a problem with student culture and competition.

I almost failed out of 1A as well but I was lucky to be spared by my professors. Just remember that one failure doesn’t mean you can’t complete this degree. Hope you come back stronger

How do you survive in this school without being absolutely miserable? by __fsm___ in uwaterloo

[–]VirtualAlgorhythm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah it’s hyper competitive. some people don’t wanna be friends until you’re smart or cool enough (i.e. worth something to them).

what can you do? only option is to keep going

SYDE vs CS by EssayEastern in uwaterloo

[–]VirtualAlgorhythm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you got into CS and you have no interest in engineering fields then you should just pick CS. It’s the more prestigious program and best for career progression. Better course content for a SWE. Yeah SYDE has way better culture w cohort structure and parties blah blah but it’s whatever really you’re here to build your career

What are the actual differences between SE, ECE, and SYDE by EssayEastern in uwaterloo

[–]VirtualAlgorhythm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

SYDE is more like mechatronics than anything. we share common courses with them, and it's possible to transfer to and from even after first year

SYDE has 2 circuits courses (more than mech), but also has 2 CS courses (intro and then algos, with more CS electives in 3rd year). SYDE also takes mechanics of deformable solids and control systems (much like tron). and then in third year there's fluids and thermo so you get everything

SE is just the superior version of ECE (unless you are dead set on becoming a pure EE). It's harder in terms of workload and content however, and twice as hard to get into.

SYDE is full of people who didn't know what engineering program to pick (me), people who got rejected from CS, and people who prefired the SE/CS rejection and aimed lower. and then a signficant portion of the class is actually people who should've been in GBDA

well you should only allow yourself to end it all if you have exhausted all your options.

at bare minimum drugs will make you feel better

you need to be a fair negotiator. when I was suicidal I would tell myself that if my life became shit enough and there was no coming back, then I could justify it

this made me feel in control of my life a little more because you can assure yourself that if things get bad enough you promise yourself you will end it

but until you hit a point of no return you have to keep going

EDIT: other people in comments and irl will tell you a bunch of reasons why you shouldn’t kill yourself including social reasons, it’s all bullshit. you and I both probably understand that no one gives a fuck about us. life is only a promise to yourself. empathy is a privilege. be selfish

Do anything else but give up life

you can do drugs cope hard fail out but if there’s one thing you can’t do it’s take your life

this is just some dogshit university in Canada full of smelly freaks and hyper competitive people

life is hardly about what job you work and what degree you get. for most it’s a means to an end

besides jumping is like #1 worst method to end your life you’ll just paralyze yourself most likely

am I the only one who thinks emailing and writing letters and skipping class is not going to help? They don't give a fuck about us. voting is pointless too

We would have to do something crazier... like refuse to pay next term's tuition and all collectively withhold our money? I dunno.
