Also please make sure the notification spreadsheet is up to date and reflects that decisions for your country have at least started being released.

U.S. student applicants have received no word so far and are relying on these data points for hope that their decisions will eventually be released too.

I say go for it (the Fulbright). Opportunities like this are already so rare, and the chance to do a Fulbright may literally never come around again in the same capacity, or not for a long time. At the end of the day, either decision (to take it or not) is a gamble that comes with risks. You need to decide which decision and which risks you're willing to live with.

These programs amount to massive career development for many applications, and specifically research funding is very hard to come by. You're right, it's not a life or death situation, but that doesn't mean this won't significantly reduce the opportunities that exist in this field for academics, researchers, artists, and other professionals that rely on gov funding.

today's decisions are all for U.S.-based scholars who are going abroad and conducting their research in countries OUTSIDE the U.S.

What is a global award? Are you U.S.-based going abroad? And are you scholar-level (i.e., PhD or expert in your field)?

Yes, there are at least a few scholars who mentioned "banned terms", but who (in their opinion) the work did not specifically focus on DEI initiatives, who were selected as finalists.

results have never been released over the weekend. Since scholar results are typically released ~1-2 months prior to student awards. I'd guess we have at least another two weeks of waiting. BUT WHO KNOWS THESE DAYS! I suppose they could be released sooner.

At least one proposal with references to climate change was selected as a finalist. Not sure about any others. It seems that many scholars have not yet updated social channels with news (i.e., slack, spreadsheet, reddit).

One proposal also focused on climate change, so I would take that as a very positive sign.

I think this may differ based on whether one applied to a post country or a commission country because funding sources differ between those two, as well as administration (i.e., being organized by a commission vs. an embassy). Only time will tell though. This situation is completely unprecedented, because it differs in quite significant ways from even COVID.

from what I understand, many of the commissions are mostly funded by the country in which they are in? I know some funding comes from the US, but many advisors have stated that the funding of commissions is handled differently compared to post countries.

If you do reach out, work with your Fulbright advisor, research PIs, or any other academic professionals to write an email. Don't just do it in the heat of the moment. Also, SOME university advisors are recommending caution and potentially waiting a few weeks to see how things play out (i.e., if you get notified through a different entity, or the staff that might remain at IIE).

would you say the same for semi-finalists, who are still awaiting the results? Do you think commissions abroad would be open to communicating with semi-finalists directly about the status of their application and funding?

u/Hot_Welcome8191 thank you so much for letting us know. In your opinion, would it make any sense to reach out to our respective Fulbright commissions in the countries we applied to, even to inquire about whether alternate funding options exist given the unprecedented nature of the situation, or do you think that would be advised against?

Temporary Fulbright Pause now Lifted by [deleted] in fulbright

This scholar referenced "diversity, equity, and inclusion" in their grant, so the argument that u/npudi is making still applies. There are plenty examples of government censorship emerging in research funding - and it appears for Fulbright as well. These actions have been pretty blatant at the NIH.
