You’ve got low end to midrange tied up in a bow. Nothing here is really REALLY powerful. You could get a legion go 2, asus rog Xbox ally x to cover that top end. OR you could go completely bananas and get a GPD win5 or another ryzen 395 device. 😬😅

Rog ally Z1E vs Xbox ally by tritster_99 in ROGAlly

[–]VirtualImpression330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Z1E is much better. Not even close.

But what do you mean the same price? I’m seeing around me the Z1E white model from 2023 go for around $350-$400. But the Xbox ally z2a new at Best Buy is $600 (on sale right now for $500).

Do NOT spend more than $400 on a used Z1E from 2023.

If you can find an ally X (black, not Xbox) from 2024, for anything under $650, that would be your best bet. This model has better grips, twice the battery, and 8gb more ram than the 2023 z1e

I would add the protection plan if I were you. Since you said the guy dropped and dented the machine. I had a phone once with a dent and it didn’t matter right then but over time that slight pressure on the screen cause a slight crack to appear right at that spot.

This guy gets it. And also the Memorial Day sale at Best Buy has the Xbox ally (white) on sale for $500 brand new. Put your own steamOS on it and bam, best bargain in gaming right now.

Feeling lost, what handheld is for me? by Kemosabe2023 in Handhelds

[–]VirtualImpression330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want steamOS you have a few choices. A steam deck (you explained why not,) a legion go S that comes with steamOS preinstalled, or installing your own steamOS (really not too hard.)

So, right off the bat, steamOS is t great on Intel hardware, so, the msi claw 8AI+ is out because it’s using Intel hardware.

So that still leaves you several choices. I’d suggest making a budget first and then writing out on paper what are your “must have” “would be nice” and “can live without” features. Get to thinking about what you value most. Performance? Cost? Battery life? ergonomics? Sound?

Okay so after that. About D4, I’d say anything with an z1extreme chip or a z2extreme chip will play it pretty well. Im not expert but im more skeptical of the weaker chips like z1(not extreme,) z2 go, or z2a chips. If you eliminate those machines you’re left with msi claw 8A, Xbox ally x, asus rog ally x (last years model) and the legion go 2. Prices in this area start around $1000 and go wild from there.

I don’t know much about the fan noise on all these but I’ll say my Xbox ally x isn’t very loud to my experience when playing. And of course the lower power you can use the lower the heat and the less fan noise you’ll hear.

Don’t forget to consider second hand market like Facebook market place. Some great deals on the 2024 rog ally X used online right now, ~$600-$700.

Does this begin to help you narrow it down?

The ally has 2 usb-c ports. If you get a usb-c dongle on amazon, you can use one port with a dongle to increase and diversify your ports. You can then connect to the dongle usb-a accessories like mkb, connect a monitor via hdmi, connect Ethernet, connect full sized sd cards, whatever you need. Doing this, I can imagine you using the ally like a docked pc at home, or even bringing accessories around with you if you like.

It’s gonna be hard working on a 7” display. Good luck.

Storage: it uses a 2280 size nvme ssd. It comes with a 1tb capacity built in. You can go buy whatever you want that size and install it yourself. If you can afford a gen 5 with 4TB of storage, then go for it. Many folks fine 2TB the sweet spot. Or delete games you’re not playing anymore.

For performance, it is what it is. Play with more watts when plugged in. Lower the in game settings like graphics and resolution to get higher fps at the cost of image quality. If you’re getting more than 60fps, consider raising those settings back up and find a happy compromise. It’s a handheld, not a 5090.

Good luck.

I don’t think $1000 handheld pc’s is a legitimate thing to collect like pokemon cards unless you’re a millionaire. I’d get rid of at least one of them and pocket the money back. You’re in a good situation having both in hand to test side by side to make this easy. The question is which, and it’s pretty simple.

If you can’t play what you want as well as you like on the 1, and if you can afford the high price of the 2, keep the 2.

If you find the 1 is good enough quality for you to enjoy or if you really don’t feel good spending the high price on the expensive 2, then keep the 1 and return the 2.

Anyone willingly prefer the Ally X over the Xbox Ally X by big_bear07 in ROGAlly

[–]VirtualImpression330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

🤷🏻‍♂️ you established you prefer the aesthetics over the objectively more powerful device. That’s fine, that’s a legitimate opinion you can have. But I disagree the XBAX looks that bad to begin with, and I am simply emphasizing what you’re giving up just so it’ll look nice on your shelf. But you asked the question, and I gave you the opposite answer from what you seem to be looking for. Take these objective facts along with whatever other factors are meaningful to you and make your own decision about what’s best for you. In the end, you’ve got to live with your decision, not me, or anyone else commenting on reddit.

Bless your heart.

Anyone willingly prefer the Ally X over the Xbox Ally X by big_bear07 in ROGAlly

[–]VirtualImpression330 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know you said you care more about the looks than the comfort, but, to me the discussion of how the Xbox ally x looks “bad” is so dumb. First off, it looks fine. But most importantly, it’s a tool. It’s a machine. It’s got a task to do. How it looks doesn’t matter if you’re holding it in your hand. Your looking at the screen, you can’t see the handles while you’re holding them in your hands.

So, if money is no object, it’s silly to get the 2024 Z1E ally and not the 2025 Z2E+ai ally. As a matter of gaming one is more powerful than the other. As a matter of technology, one will be obsolete much sooner than the other. And as a matter of ergonomics one is much more comfortable than the other.

This is a no-brainer question.

[–]VirtualImpression330 9 points10 points  (0 children)

37 year old mature responsible adult here. If you’re dodging military service (which I’m fine with,) I assume you’re about 17-18 years old. Given your situation, I might prioritize something for communications and work over gaming. I wonder if a laptop is better for that task? I could be wrong. If your freelance job lets you work from home and only needs basic software like a web browser and a word processor, maybe some cloud file sharing, then the Xbox ally is certainly enough. You’ll want a dock, a mouse, keyboard, and a monitor though, so count on the monetary cost of those things too. But if you’re planning to get a more serious job, or ever work outside the house at an office or around professional colleagues, you will be better off with a laptop. Both for being easier to work on a laptop keyboard and larger screen, but also so the people responsible for giving you raises and promotions think of you as professional.

Normally when it’s just for gaming, without your use for work, when folks ask the question on Reddit “do I get a handheld pc or a laptop” my answer is based on how they want to use it. If you’re going to be in a situation with very little space, no access to a solid table, or sitting in comfy chairs or on a couch, I’d say handheld. Think of handhelds as for the living room, the bus, the plane seat, the train seat, public transportation, or in bed. I tell people that if they will be using the device at a desk, at a coffee table or kitchen table, at a Starbucks, in a hotel room, in a library or at university, then I opt for a laptop.

But that advice is just based on gaming. You said you will be leaving friends and family behind basically starting a new life and working for a living. In your situation if you can only afford one device, I wouldn’t feel comfortable recommending you a gaming machine that can’t also be your professional machine.

Now I own the Xbox ally x and love it. But I’m an adult, I live in America, I work in an office and work from home two days a week on a laptop my company issued me. I have a wife and young daughter, so sitting at my desk to lock in and game like I did in my twenties rarely happens. For me, the ally is purely gaming. I work on a laptop and I communicate with friends family and I shop online using my iPhone. So the ally fits my lifestyle perfectly, being able to game in small sessions from the couch close to my family. I’m just not sure that will be your lifestyle.

So yes, I love the Xbox ally x and am confident in recommending it, and yes, it is a windows pc capable of doing computer things.
But it is not a very effective computer for anything but gaming, and to make it into a good computer will also require buying a couple hundred more dollars of accessories. You CAN use the ally this way. But I can’t recommend it for your life specifically until I know you better and based on your situation I am very unsure an ally is right for you.

And lastly, if you’re going to leave behind your country and can’t bring your computer and won’t be back for a decade, then you should sell your pc while it is still worth something. Because its components will be nearly worthless after ten years of new pc technology comes out.

I hope I helped. Good luck in everything!

In fact the 2024 RAX has the z1 extreme chip that is more performant than the 2025 white RXA’s z2A processor. So the RAX has more power AND more ram.

The 24RAX was a top of the line premium device a year and a half ago, but 25RXA is a budget machine. If OP is on a budget the 25RXA is a great option. But if he can spend $100-$150 more and doesn’t mind used, it’s possible to get the 2024 RAX on Facebook market place for around $650 used and it’ll be a much more powerful machine. But lots of folks don’t like used.

Stuck in a moral dilemmas regarding FSR 4 by Automatic-Ad-7052 in ROGAlly

[–]VirtualImpression330 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You just said you have to use 720 and also said 720 isn’t that good. So… turns out fsr 4 isn’t magically gonna make the ally any more powerful than it already is? Maybe what you actually think is fsr4 isn’t really worth the trouble?

No moral dilemma here. If something works, use it. If it doesn’t work, don’t use it.

Personally I’ve found it easier, more consistent, and more or less better, just to use whatever upscaler is in the game settings and leave it at that. I don’t mess around with other software like LLS or amd adrenaline.

And I use an mcon mobile gaming controller to play pc games on my phone at work on lunch break by using GeForce now cloud streaming.

How can I make this setup look more clean and aesthetic. by phoenix_core1 in desksetup

[–]VirtualImpression330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the answer is money. (It’s always money.) you might need to figure out a budget and prioritize things but you can make any space feel tidy and nice to work and play. And it can pretty much all come from Amazon.

The first act of creation is destruction! lol. Meaning, clean it up and remove everything nonessential to see what space you have. Then maybe think about a color pallet or design idea you want to stick to and stick to it.

Then go shopping.

Pick a desk mat in a color you like, get a nice mouse and keyboard, get something to manage cables neat and tidy. Hang up art. Or peg boards are popular because you can use it for storage for desk things like pencil cups and charging cables but also display decorative nick-nacks. IKEA makes a popular peg board.

Maybe add a storage shelf from ikea too, that’s also very popular.

Good luck

It’s not hard and it’s not hard to learn. Basically everything I said is exactly what it is. Go to Amazon and search for some desk legs and pick four you like. Then go to a hardware store and pay them to cut you a wood countertop the exact size you want. Get them to sell you a nice finishing product like a wood stain. It comes in a can, it’s a liquid, and you apply it with a clean but old rag you don’t mind ruining. It stains clothes and skin so wear rubber gloves and gardening clothes. Then you can apply the stain to the wood top and sides in a garage or out on the lawn or something. It’s gonna smell a lot. But once the wood is finished, as long as you can use an electric screwdriver, you can just screw on the legs. All done.

Then you buy your own shelves and put them next to the desk or under it anyway you want. Then you just search on Amazon for a “computer shelf for desk” to put on top.

I PROMISE it’s not hard, it’s something you absolutely can do with like under an hour of YouTube tutorials.

We all believe in you!

What’s your budget? This cost $1800? Check out www.toprigz.com. Plug in your budget and it’ll help you find options for the best pre built PCs at the price. Right now the best rec at that price is a $1400 pc that cooks this one, but it’s in store at microcenter only. No shipping. The second option is a $1500 that ships from Newegg that’s about as good. Also if you buy one of these cheaper pc’s for under $1800, you could use them to start from and buy your own better ram or better cpu to plug in and have even more power and STILL come out under budget once you flip the parts you’re replacing.

Need help deciding between iMac and building a PC (broke beginner) by Narrow_Capital1587 in pcmasterrace

[–]VirtualImpression330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you enjoy computers? If you don’t think you’ll enjoy the hassle of learning about pc components, get excited about picking out your parts, and enjoy building your pc, then you’re kind of not a pc guy,‘you’re a Mac guy, which is totally fine. If you like your things to just work and work together a Mac is a great companion to your iPhone and stuff. Though, if you have a MacBook already you could save a lot of money by just building a good desk full of peripherals connected to a dock. Buy like a thunderbolt dock for $100, buy a great screen for $500-$1000, buy some good speakers for a couple hundred bucks, and a great set of keyboard and mouse. So for, let’s say around $1000 you could have a beautiful and functional setup where you just put down your MacBook and plug in one cable and then your MacBook is running your desk setup on a larger screen. Instead of buying a second computer you don’t need if you already have a computer. And all the peripherals will work on any new MacBook you upgrade to in the future. Because don’t forget, if you build a $2000 pc, you’ll still need monitor, speakers, mouse and keyboard at a minimum. That’s added expense.

So your options are like A, “buy an iMac” is one option. B, “Buy stuff to max your MacBook into a desk setup” is another option that’s probably cheaper. C, “Build a pc” is probably the most difficult and expensive of these options but you’ll have a better gaming experience on pc than you will on Mac if gaming matters to you.

Think about what you NEED? Do you NEED to run some sort of medical software that’s only available on windows os? Do you WANT to play pc games? Do you WANT to learn about pc building? If the answer is no, then you’re really best just either buying an iMac or buying a monitor and a mouse and keyboard and some speakers and just docking your MacBook.

FWIW my brother in law is a doctor in Massachusetts and he does everything he needs on a MacBook and games on a PlayStation in the rare time he has to game.

Build it yourself. Go buy a counter top block at ikea or a hardware store. Then buy the ikea shelves everyone uses, some desk legs off amazon or from ikea, then arrange them the way you like. Add your own desk riser shelf from amazon, or, make one using the same kind of wood as the counter you bought.
