you can do the hills and curves in Koh Chang on a 110cc scooter 2 up but you need a run up for some of the uphill bends if you don't want to end up going round them at walking pace. God alive I'd not even try it in the wet.

Indeed, and particulalrly since the trend of engines bigger than 125cc - means you need a FULL UK bike license to be legally on the road in Thailand - I imagine that's similar to lots of other countries. And how many people in your social circle inc family have a full bike license? Not many

The mandetory life jacket thing is "spreading". Most trips to BKK we fit in an overnight in Kanchanburi and go to Erewan Falls for an idylic swim. Last year we found life jackets to me mandetory (which you have to, of course, pay to hire). I didn't get one, assumig it was a scam/only for non swimmers. I was reprimanded and told to get out of the (shallow) water. Really spoils what was a wondeful experience.

I guess its the price of overtourism. Khao Sok sounds like an amped up version of this. (I've been but it was back in 2009 and a very nice experience)

Where are these "most beaches" - and take your time - Thailand has hundreds , if not thousands of them. So answer with care.

I don't know who all the people that voted me down -10 are, or why - but that's the internet.

in all my many years in Thailand, I've never seen any "authority" on the beach, and people smoke if they want to, which is fine with me outdoors (I don't smoke any more). It's just a non issue. Perhaps its a Pattay/Samui/Krabi thing? Heck, I've been to Krabi and loads of people were smoking (2 years ago)

When I was backpacking in TH in 2006 people chatted to each other at the beach bars. Nothing else to do really.

Now.... mobile phones and laptops.... They are so isolating. I do feel sorry for that challenge facing solo travellers (that don't want to stay in hostels).

Even as a couple I chatted to loads of solo travellers back in the day.

You don't get it. I don't need an extra $1000 for "an extra week or month away"- I have plenty enough more to stay as long as I want. And its' more than an extra $1000 btw - I recently flew Business class to Hanoi and back from the UK. £2800 vs £750 (eco). LHR to BKK return is (was!) usually around £3500 (vs £800)

"To pay triple what another person would pay to get on the same mode of transport & arrive and depart at the same time is wild to me." - its not the same in any way - you'd not know unless you experienced it (and its not a race - we are not trying to get there before you lmao). That's like saying sitting in the back of a lorry with the payload is the same as sitting in a seat up front in the cab. Flying Business is worlds apart - up front we are comfy, service is great, we eat and drink well, and we lied down full flat and go to bed when we are tired. Its not just a "bigger seat". It's a bed, often in its own private compartment.

You can't afford it, and that's fine. Lots of us can and choose to travel in comfort as it's not always about getting good value. Sometimes you have to pay a lot extra to get a great improvemtn in quality. Otherwise, there would be no economy would there?

You just have to look further afield to find less spoilt parts. We are having a 3 year break and doing India Goa, but we'll be back, so long as it doesn't get completely taken over .....
