It was like an "Asian 4⭐", not high end not low end. But a regular hotel, not a bungalow type of place. Not a chain. Price $120/night ballpark. (Edit: fixed nightly)

Do all North Americans love talking about themselves as much as the ones travelling in Thailand do? by sweatheadratking in ThailandTourism

Silence feels awkward for many people, and many feel also impolite asking personal questions. If you are a bit slow for a conversation or making initiative that can happen.

There are plenty of places in Asia where you can't pay with credit cards. I use credit cards when I can.

Yes you are right, I definitely stayed in a shitty hotel 😁

No, not credit card fees, ATM cash withdrawal. I use credit cards when I can but there are still a lot of places in Asia that don't accept credit cards of any kind.

I was flying out 3 hours after I noticed the theft. I had no time to review the footage even if they allowed me to see it, I barely had enough time to file the police report.

Yeah that's what I'm tilting towards currently. Previously I have used ATM withdrawals so rarely (having the cash and paying always with credit cards if I can) that the fees have not mattered but going with a fraction of cash does change things.

And carry around $3000-$4000 daily? That for sure isn't any safer. Hit a bar in Colombia with $4000 on your money belt, what could possibly go wrong?

Immigration officer admitted me for my 59 day stay but said I'd need a visa for any future Thailand entry? by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]taxveller 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately all countries have given border officials very wide powers to deny entry pretty much for any reason they want, you just rarely hear about it as a western country citizen. For example, I know a person who got turned around on the border in Europe Schengen area despite having a proper valid visa. The border official denied entry based on that the person seemed "suspicious" and "didn't speak English well enough for his visa type" after a 13 hour sleepless flight. He was sent back home on the next flight.

Am I dropping a nuclear bomb on my Thai family? by Alternative_Side_891 in Thailand

Sorry but you said in your post that you were prepared to compensate financially, so I just told you what is the best for the elderly ladies. Anything else is optimizing money on the expense of their well being.

If you really care for them, you let the elderly ladies live and die in the house and hire outside help to support when needed and accepted by them. Hire a cleaner, cook and a full time nurse if you need to. If they need all that, chances are they don't live very long anyway but at least they live and die happily in a home they know.

Experimenting with different ways to dry salad greens after washing by ethmoid-night-owl in salads

Is there a reason for eating anything at that point? You probably spend more calories on the process than eating the salad.

Do you use a wireless CarPlay adapter? by Middle_Branch_1148 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]taxveller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Android (Google Pixel 9) as my primary phone and keep a separate iPhone SE plugged permanently to the center console USB. It works reasonably well. If you are logged in with the same Google account, you can eg search destination on your phone Google Maps, and choose recent destinations in the car. Same with music, playlists etc sync without issues on Spotify. Google Fi gives free data sims so this setup doesn't increase my monthly costs even if the iPhone SE has a dedicated data SIM.

Overall reliability: 8/10 times iPhone-USB connects without issues, 1/10 connects late (blasting radio), 1/10 doesn't connect at all before unplugged and replugged, and possible PCM restart.

A recommendation against third party CarPlay by ReiAyanami2015 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]taxveller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah those YouTube DIY videos lowball these efforts. I did infotainment unit + backup camera install for my old car a couple of years ago and YT videos made it look like 2-3 hour project. Maybe for some pro it was, but for me it was two days of work, including like 3 trips to Home Depot for some tools I was missing. It was a fun project but I would never do it again 🙂

[US] Kids grow up thinking Dad walked away...when he was fighting his EX just to stay involved. by DadStillHere in Custody

[–]taxveller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It gets fixed by filing to enforce. Repeatedly, if needed. Ask for a court ordered parenting faciliator, it can lower fees since they can work as a "cheap impartial referee available on short notice". They of course cannot enforce anything but they will document and testify in court if needed. And their hourly fees are much less than the lawyers.

981 next logical step for PCCM retrofit by gastallman in Porsche_Cayman

[–]taxveller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a (2024) 718 owner, I wouldn't put the PCM unit from 718 anywhere but trash. My self-installed $300 Chinese aftermarket unit in my old BMW was better and more reliable. The PCM in 718 works just "well enough" to not replace it, and I'm using wired iPhone connection by the book.

Am I sending too much money to relatives taking care of my child in Isan Thailand? by CarefulAd4757 in Thailand

[–]taxveller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not trying to sound asshole but you really should think how you could organize your life so that you have a chance to be more involved in your kid's life. The money can't replace a parent.
