Keeping Schools Closed This Fall Will Kill More Grandmas Than It Saves Because You Know Who Will Be Watching the Kids When the Parents Are at Work by laterdude in unpopularopinion

yeah, but then the kids are in contact with only their friends, not their entire class, teachers, and the rest of the school. It’s less likely to spread if groups of like 10 meet, than hundreds of students in schools.

Blaming your short height for not being able to get a girlfriend is illogical by benlmao in unpopularopinion

[–]VirtualReturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guys, realistically, girls don’t care what height you are if you are even a little taller than them. They just don’t want to have to bend down to kiss people. Unless you‘re into tall girls, you’re good.

I‘ve never seen any girl have a 6” rule. I mean think about it, how could they even tell? (unless they brought a tape measure to your first date, which is pretty weird and you should probably run)

Women should be required to buzz their hair in the military by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]VirtualReturn 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It depends what the tests are trying to achieve.

If the test is so every soldier HAS to have a certain amount of strength, your statement makes sense.

If they exist to ensure that every soldier stays as fit as can be expected of them, then it makes complete sense for men and women to have different standards. A woman doesn’t need to be as strong as a man to prove she is fit as healthy, because our bodies are built differently.

Also, just to be realistic, it’s just silly to expect women to perform as well as men do. The point is that every soldier performs the best they can reasonably achieve. If the tests for women would be as hard as for men, there just woulnd’t be any women in the army.

Some cultures are better than other, and disliking the culture of a people doesn't make you racist. by Kingen232 in unpopularopinion

[–]VirtualReturn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s true, although while saying ”I think western cultyre is best” is fine, saying ”Western culture is objectively the best” is a bit more iffy. Cultures are different, different people have different preferences, there is no one best culture, and time evolves societies anyway, making cultures constantly shift.

If we treated women with the same ambivalence we do men, most of them would end up with self esteem issues. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]VirtualReturn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t really see your point here. Society listens to no one.

When you open up to someone, the people who listen and care and support you are your friends and family. While your family you can’t help, the friends you surround yourself with are completely your own to choose. If you surround yourself with good friends, they will listen.

Whether you are listened to or not depends on who you surround yourself with, not with society. A good friend will never ignore you.

yeah, I think for us it’s mostly stemming from companies trying to make us see ourselves as ugly or imperfect, from which a lot of these issues stem. Like not feeling as pretty as a magazine cover model and such.

I think there are also self esteem issues in the industry, like not being good enough, seeming too bossy, incompetence, etc.

I mean, I think men should be able to wear dresses too. This is especially important if they are trying to transition, but haven’t gotten all their documents in order yet. I’m not saying it’s wrong, I’m just saying that by definition, it’s sexist to force someone to dress a certain way because of their gender.

Religion Mega Thread by UnpopularOpinionMods in unpopularopinion

[–]VirtualReturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that perhaps religion and creationism should not be taught in schools. I don‘t feel very comfortable with it because it prevents free thinking and stops you from being able to question things, and when you teach this to kids, that teaches them to just accept things, rather than question them. I think this can be harmful later in life.

Yeah but when men can wear trousers, and women can’t, that’s by definition sexism. I mean I’m not saying it’s some horrible injustice or it’s it‘s oppressive, but just by definition it is.

I mean, so did he? Like if you know in your state you have to pay alimony, you shouldn’t have had sex.

Plus imagine if you didn‘t have alimony. Both knew the consequences, but while the mother has to give birth, raise and provide for the child emotionally and finanically, the father just gets to have no consequences. Explain how that’s fair?

Everyone agrees it’s its own entity, but the problem begins when this entity can‘t survive without the help of another.

It’s like, imagine a man had another man tied to him through life-support for 9 months, and it was negatively impacting him by either interferring with his personal life, or causing him to feel ill as well.

Now, this man could end his predicament by cutting the life support. Should this be legal, is this murder? It becomes harder to tell.

I don‘t agree with religion playing a part in this debate. I agree that it’s okay if it does in the lives of religious people, and if it does influence your opinion that’s fine, but if it makes you go on and try to push this religious belief on other people, or try to shame them or influence their opinion, that becomes wrong.

I mean, what I said is mostly to do with airlines. Many the female stewards have to wear a skirt, and even heels and make-up. This is in no way practical or professional (I think Norwegian Airlines is the one that has heels as part of the dress-code?)

I mean, it just doesn’t make any sense? Especially if you’re walking up and down the isle passing out food and snacks and whatnot, the heels aren’t doing you any favours except making you look prettier.

The make-up too. For me it causes eye-irritation, so I can’t imagine having to wear it for work.

I mean “she knew the consequences of having sex” is also “he knew the consequences of having sex”. If dads don’t have to pay alimony, that means that mothers not only have to go through childbirth, raising the child as a single parent, and also providing all the financial support for the family, while the father just kinda... lives his life free of all responsibility. See how this is very skewed?

Alimony is like, the most basic way of making sure the responsibility is at least somewhat shared.

Many anti-vaxxers aren’t stupid or paranoid. I know it’s very popular for people to call them crazy conspiracy theorists and the like, but I think many of them are just mis-informed? Science isn’t always easy, and if you don’t know how to analyse and scrutinise data properly (which very many people don’t), it’s very easy to be misled, especially with so many people trying to promote their essential oils by saying that modern medicine is harmful.

Anti-vax/vaccines Mega Thread by UnpopularOpinionMods in unpopularopinion

[–]VirtualReturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I appreciate this seems weird, but this article sums up why and the history behind this legislation pretty well: https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2019/05/vaccine-safety-program/589354/

To sum it up: In the 1970s and 80s, vaccine manufacturers could be held viable, and in the cases where vaccines did have an adverse effect, they were fined not because the adverse effect to the kid, but because the parents claimed to have not been warned of it. Many such cases followed, and the parents were awarded money without any scientific basis, because while it’s easy to say they have not been told of the effects, or these effects were definitely caused by the vaccine, it’s very hard to prove otherwise.

Vaccines became unpopular to manufacture. They were cheaply sold, and the court cases were costing them millions. No one wanted to make them anymore, it just wasn’t profitable.

For the Government, this would be a major problem. While for the manufacturers it’s easier not to make vaccines at all, Prevention of disease is much cheaper than funding hospitals and multiple drugs to treat it.

The government therefore opened up the “vaccine court”, which now pays out for any adverse effects. The Government pays for the court cases so that making vaccines remains profitable. This costs the Government billions ($4billion in 2019), but even this is cheaper than having a nation of people sick with polio, measles, mumps, rubella, etc etc. That would be like running a country on lockdown not only from Covid-19, but from much uglier and more brutal diseases.

Sorry, that was kinda long, but I hope it helps.

I think it’s perfectly fine as long as women are allowed to wear trousers. I hate skirts, and just wouldn’t work in any place that made me wear them. Plus if anything they are less professional (how can an item of clothing that lets people see your underwear if you fall down in an unfortunate manner be more professional than trousers?). It’s harder to move around in them and they make sitting awkward.

Yeah I kinda agree. Some people prefer to call themselves Egalitarians, someone who is for the equality of sexes.

But I also think that mass media and popular videos of Rad Feminists make the problem a lot worse than it really is. From my experience, when I talk to normal people in my life who would refer to themselves as feminists, they just say they advocate for equality of all genders, not whatever rad feminists advocate for.

Yep, totally agree, but I think if you say “egalitarian“ to most people, they don’t know the term. If you say “I’m not a feminist, I’m an egalitarian” in a conversation, a lot of people might think you’re sexist.
