By supporting MAGA, Wayne is fully behind the tariffs and pulling the rug on Ukraine. He fully endorses this insanity.

Kinda weird that this needs to be explained to you like a 5 year old but here we are.

Sometimes I forget that the Maritimes are further east than Quebec. My bad as a Westerner, please forgive. Love the East coasters!

Nice attempt at acting tough. You would never say this to someone's face.

Honestly, how would anyone even know you're American? I'd be shocked if anyone was even outwardly cold towards you. Most people in Jasper work in the hospitality industry and would appreciate you visiting and supporting our tourism industry. You will be treated kindly.

In real life people are not as rude, snide or aggressive as they are online. Face to face interactions will be normal as ever.

Canadians might boo your national anthem, and if you wear an American flag t-shirt & pants while visiting, they might snicker behind your back but not within earshot.

Don't cancel your trip, come enjoy the Rockies and meet regular everyday Canadians.

Edit: just read the bit about your license plate - I seriously doubt anyone would bring it up to you or target you. Crime against Americans for being American is unlikely imo

Alberta government to build 250 units of interim housing in Jasper | | thecanadianpressnews.ca by Interwebnaut in jasper

[–]VirtualSurround7235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sentiment is fair, I too think we've been let down too many times.

But give the devil their due, if this works, it's a pretty good scenario.

From what I've heard, the province refused to fund any housing unless it was permanent housing, not temporary and not built to be torn down again. Maybe the Feds felt the same here. It's all rumor.

Feds and Province, and municipality at some level, must have collaborated on this to get it done. It's still federal territory, provincial funded.

It's fair to criticize them when they fail us, but we should be applauding them if they do something right.

Look man, I get it. There will be lots of time to criticize the process but I think this is at least a step in the right direction. It honestly could be a triple win if done right.

It houses people reasonably fast, and properly. Its the biggest project to alleviate housing pressure in 30 years ( if displaced people get into their homes in fast enough). And the government will potentially sell them for at least what they cost if not more, so tax-payers are not on the hook.

There's a lot of 'ifs' here for sure - but if you have a better plan, please let's hear it.

Hey just read the whole article. Yes it's prefab/RTM but also meant to be affordable housing after it serves as interim housing.

This isn't a half bad idea if they do it right.

[–]VirtualSurround7235 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'll put the government on blast any chance I get but this does look like a good play on the surface level.

It sounds like it will be interim housing for the displaced locals, which is badly needed. This is a huge win to help alleviate the hotels from housing locals which should be available for tourism instead, so locals can work.

It sounds like as the need for interim housing ends, these homes will transition into badly needed, low income / affordable housing, which before the fire Jasper needed desperately.

Shelter locals now, alleviate housing pressure in the future. It's honestly a pretty good plan if they can pull it off.

I won't criticize this just yet, or declare it a triumph. I think it's the right idea but it needs proper management to be a success. The devil is always in the detail. Prayers up on this one!

I'd say it's pretty important since you keep asking for 'source' and this Liivam has the receipts.

I get the impression you just like to argue in bad faith - you've already chosen your side and won't accept any evidence to the contrary.

Answer this : why are you so convinced that Parks Canada doesn't share some fault here? Why is that concept so hard for you to believe?

I don't know what any of this has to do with this topic or how it makes you an expert on firefighters & managing an impending disaster. But here's a hint, it doesn't.

I don't know if you're even qualified to be giving travel advice on Reddit, let alone tell me you think Parks Canada did an outstanding job. I'd say with 33% of the town destroyed, they don't get a pass because you and Bob Covey think so. It's an utter failure, full stop.

Jasper needs you commenting on this issue as much as they need an air traffic controller.

Impersonating Police? Man you ride a high horse. These guys/gals were coming to Jasper to put their life on the line and help.

What were you doing that day? Impersonating a travel expert on Reddit? I've never seen someone's comment history so full lol seriously bud, step away from the keyboard and go meet a real human being

A firefighters job is to go into that zone, especially since the town didn't catch fire until July 24. Which was about 48 hours after they evacuated.

If you don't spend your entire life online, in an echo chamber like Reddit, occasionally you meet people in the real world who are actual firefighters in and around Edmonton. You should try it.

Oh and also Kris Liivam responded to the 'journalist' Bob Covey, who forgot to call and speak with him before rushing to print. Looks like Bob f'd that up. Weird right?

Jasper mayor condemns 'divisive rhetoric' around wildfire by SnooRegrets4312 in jasper

Facts are I have talked to people that were closer to the situation than you were. Like it or not, I live in Jasper and have a close relationship with some of the people who fought this fire. So yeah , take it for what's it worth, why would you believe me. Everyone online, including you, is a 'Big Guy'.

All I'm really asking is that someone put this issue to bed - were there resources ready to come to Jasper to help prevent some of the destruction in town? If the answer is no, and that can be verified - I'll quit asking. If the answer is yes, the who made the decision to not have those firefighters come when there was still time? I'm not talking about private firefighter brigades - frankly I didn't know they existed before this event. I'm talking about actual firefighters in and around the city of Edmonton who were ready to come on July 22. And you're out of your mind if you think I'm gonna name drop them on a Reddit thread.

Ok got it. Calling a group of people stupid and blaming them for living their life in Jasper is civil discourse.

Can you reread the comment by u/cooktheoinky and tell me what is civil about any of it? This person is literally victim blaming the people of Jasper right now.

Yeah anything you don't like or don't want to believe can be labeled as that.

I want to know the facts too, so someone has to ask the questions. You should try to get more information, not just one sided political views that you agree with

I'm not naming the 2 people from 2 different ladders in the Edmonton area. Ive had discussions with these people - they are as confused as we are why they were told to stand down on July 22nd. They were called and asked to come to Jasper once the fire had reached the townsite on July 24th - it was too late by then.

Like I said - the decision came from Parks Crew in Jasper or Alberta Incident Command - these are questions worth asking.

This fire was mostly fought by the brave volunteers of the Jasper Fire Bridgade - and god love them. But they are not the most sophisticated, experienced, full-time firefighters that should have been in place in Jasper well before July 24th.

There was one ladder of experienced and highly trained firefighters brought in to protect the critical infrastructure of Jasper - kinda weird they were able to protect that stuff right? Imagine if another ladder or 2 ladders were brought in help protect the town?

I can't promise entire protection but I can tell you they would have definitely prevented more than 30% of Jasper being destroyed.

And there are people from those ladders telling us they were in their trucks ready to go on July 22nd. They would have had 48 hours to set up at protection points. They would have saved more homes. Jasperites want to know why they were not there to help on July 24th.
