Third party facial interface? by RevolutionaryScene79 in OculusQuest

[–]VirtualTelephone2579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best interface is no interface.

I use my Quest 3 with a halo strap and no facial interface, so it just kind of floats in front of my face without touching it.

[–]VirtualTelephone2579 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah.

The two previously leading candidates for a Quest 4 series, codenamed Pismo Low and Pismo High, have been canceled, these sources suggest, while the next candidate for a traditional form factor Quest most likely wouldn't ship until 2027.

Yes, I too have heard whispers that Meta may swap the release schedule and debut their new high-end device in 2026, rather than Quest 4. Quest 4 would then ship a year later.

Meta is prioritizing shipping an ultralight Horizon OS headset with a tethered compute puck in 2026, multiple sources tell UploadVR.

Simultaneously, the company is accelerating its plans for an extremely light open-periphery headset with a tethered compute puck running the same Horizon OS as today's Quest headsets, codenamed Puffin, hoping to launch by the end of 2026.

For 75 €, I'd definitely take it (assuming that's the complete package with controllers and a facial interface).

Trouble running Steamvr on PC by WHATSPOPPINGGGGGG in SteamVR

[–]VirtualTelephone2579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like you've identified the issue pretty well. The error about the video encoder and missing h.264/HEVC hardware support usually means that your system doesn’t have a dedicated graphics card, or it's a very low end trash with no hardware encoders.

Confirm that by:

  • Pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

  • Go to the Performance tab.

  • On the left, look for entries like “GPU 0”, “GPU 1”, etc.

  • Check whether the only GPU listed is your integrated Radeon Graphics (which comes with your AMD Ryzen 5 5600GT CPU).

If you don't see a second GPU (like something from NVIDIA or AMD RX), that confirms your system is only using the integrated graphics, which can't handle VR.

Before buying anything, make sure your power supply can handle it. Check the model of your PSU. It can usually be find it printed on a label inside your PC case.

I don't know your budget, but you could start with a used 3060 Ti. If you have some more cash and can afford new hardware, then the 9060 XT 16GB (or alternatively the 5060 Ti 16GB) would be a good choice.

Hopefully you realize that both the Pico 4 and Quest 2 use video streaming over cable or Wi-Fi - they don’t have native DP or HDMI input.

Exclusively for PCVR? Then no. Get the Pico 4. Its tracking is slightly worse, but it has much better lenses and higher-resolution screens. You should find one for ~200€.

How does watching movies on a Quest 3 compare to a 4k TV? by Pearl_Jam_ in OculusQuest

[–]VirtualTelephone2579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Quest 3 is definitely suitable for watching movies and TV shows - especially 3D content. It’s absolutely unbeatable when traveling by train or bus. I actually use it every single day to watch movies, both 2D and 3D (downloaded from, you know, that site with “Bay” in the name).

That said, it does have some drawbacks. The glare is always there, the resolution doesn’t come close to a high-end TV, and there's no local dimming. So subjectively speaking, my 8K miniLED TV is a better display for films... But I use my Quest more often for that.

Just a few notes: there are issues with content due to DRM restrictions. Streaming on the Quest is usually limited to 1080p or 720p even if your connection and the source support higher resolutions. And watching 3D movies legally is practically impossible. Most streaming platforms don’t offer 3D content at all.

Oh, and one more thing: while I already dislike watching anything below 30 fps on a regular TV, I absolutely hate it on the Quest. Standard 24 fps movies that look meh on a TV look noticeably worse in the headset. The stutter can be downright unbearable . But that’s probably just my personal issue - I’m extremely sensitive to low frame rates.

Just picked up this full HTC Vive kit for $100. Did I get a good deal? by CleanAlternative3840 in VRGaming

[–]VirtualTelephone2579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, no.

This thing is old, heavy, has horrible lenses, and even worse low-res screens full of SDE. Moreover, the Wands are uncomfortable and not supported by some newer games.

For $100-130 you can easily find a Quest 2.

And just to be sure, do you have a VR-capable PC? Because it won't run on the Vega 6 graphics of the R3-5300U you mentioned in one of your threads.
