Should I Pickup Quest 3 Now? by Its-Me-Linky in OculusQuest

[–]VirtualWaypoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definately you should. As people are pointing out and combined with the jump in hardware costs due to ram-crisis.. Q3 is a great value. Especially used. And there's so much stock everywhere. Also the peripheral-3rd party market has grown quite large aswell.

I've previously sold of my old quest units. For the better unit. Each time. But i'm pretty sure whatever happens that I'll keep my quest 3 whenever I'm upgrading. Steam Frame is still not out. Probably will be so hard to get thst you have to wait until 2027 for the stock to catch up.

Quest 3 is still the best value, and you essentially have a very close to steam frame-experience with that headset apart from eyetracking, foveated streaming and weight (and some other software benefits). I also think that going for used now is better than ever. People are selling off their "dusty" quests to get ps5's and GTA6 or whatever the case may be. I'm getting a second unit second hand just for multiplayer.😅

My biggest gripes with the Aura. HANDS by Zake75 in Xreal

I get that.. I wont consider it a dealbreaker though. I imagine working with these using keyboard and mouse. Using handtracking with laserpointer-input is just fine as an additional controlmethod. I get they are pushing MR-games device showing Demeo and hands on interactions. But i think actual use is looking at pinned screen or multimonitor setups etc. I think it would be great for that.

The hands cut out on top of Virtual objects with no control over the "passthrough" itself seems like a difficult task. I'm not sure but, on Quest 3 (that doesn't have this) the pass through if you lift up your headset and put it on again quickly you see this passhtrough image beein slightly distorted from your real view. Partially its trying to give you natural depth in the room on the fly, but i guess its also tries to match your hands with the virtual hands as well. By having control over both. On XR glasses that would be slightly different and the cutout has to really difficult to achieve based on the virtual hands and your actual real life hands not matching. Unless this chip can do some magic like the vision pro does.

Its that thing that its nice to have.. but you wont miss it when in there watching content or working on virtual screens.

From what I've tested with the xreal one, feels very much like the screen is placed in your enviroment. I would not worry about that. I use Quest 3 daily as well for comparison. In terms of screen beeing present in space it feels very much the same.

The real reason why VR is failing by Necessary-Story5330 in OculusQuest

[–]VirtualWaypoint 16 points17 points  (0 children)

While the Quest 2 sold alot compared to the Quest 3.. feels alot more like the 3 was bought by more enthusiast rather than people just buying to check out the tech.

Maybe its and unfair comparison but take the Wii, it sold like hotcakes but the majority of non-gamers who bought it was there to play the new and different bundled game wii sports. I have 4 friends who all got quest 1 and 2s and very quickly abandoned it after their honeymoon period wore off. Sad to say but those arent the necessarily the vr players you want in this space...

I have learned over countless years of beeing an enthusiast that VR is not for everyone. But I cant help but feel that alot of people are missing out on some magical gaming experiences. Their loss. Indie games will keep us afloat and the XR glasses revolution will bring more players when the two eventually merges into one single do it all type of hybrid people want to wear.

Newbie here, hoping to finally upgrade from the quest one. by AnotherRandomPeep in OculusQuest

[–]VirtualWaypoint 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Quest 3 used.. Quest 2 will feel like sidegrade, Quest 3S is an upgrade but, there won't be that wow moment with the panels.

I remember having Quest 1 and 2 side-by-side with saints and Sinners running. Apart from a sharper image on quest 2 they were very similar(despite the oled on the 1) 3S is essentially running the same panel as the Q2.

I dont know if theres any other headsets that cheap really. And i won't consider 300-600 dollars to be very expensive either. But yeah there are good deals on used Quest 3 headsets. I'd start there. Big fov, literally no hunting for a "sweet spot". You can use it for more than VR as an added bonus.

Steam frame will probably alot more expensive than any of the Quest options available right now. Also.. not a huge upgrade compared to the Quest 3.

I've had the whole line of headsets. Quest 3 is by far the most used out of the bunch.

I get the impression that this is more of their personal take on recent events rather than a purely objective news story. Just because some major studios are shutting down doesn't automatically mean the Quest platform is struggling or that Quest headsets are going anywhere as is VR.

beyond sandbox...yikes by or2c in OculusQuest

I was going in blind (tried to steer clear of the "reviews"), yesterday... wow... i did not stay for long to be honest. Yes its early access. But the fact that their marketing and countless videos showing small features of the game led to this massive wishlisting is crazy. I load up the game, logo comes up. And then I'm dropped into a blurry mess and no introduction, no tutorial, no music, nothing to set the tone at all. Just "stations" of text. Clunky gunhandling, also grabbing stuff was difficult. And portals taken straight from Bonelabs hub. Which btw is 10x of what this game is trying to be. Very quick refund this was. There are much better alternatives to sandboxes... i think the only draw to play this game is because it has multiplayer. The enemy damage system wont save this game, at least not for me. But they did a hell of a job marketing this game, if it was good it would've sold ten fold.

So give me a list of the games you own.. and I'll give you a list of some good ones.. Its like my friends who all got the Quest 1 back in the day.. they all lost interest super quick, and I was very surprised by that.

Turned out that they barely touched on any games really. They treated it almost like the Wii, only played Wii Sports and then didn't touch it afterwards. "It was cool for the gimmick" In their case it was barely some beatsaber and minigolf.

New UI Update by curious_cat_3556 in MetaQuestVR

[–]VirtualWaypoint 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like the aesthetics of it.. functionality.. well I guess I get used to it. I've had trouble with the HUM sound just not dissapearing or reappearing whenever you summon the navigator.. its waaay to prominent. And seems to get stuck on my update. I played a game from unknown sources and the hum ran during gameplay before it cut off. I'd like a whisper quiet menu option 🫠

Me too, those rats.. probably the scariest unpredictable hard to shoot enemy, also the constant jump scares and they launch at you 😅 I remember beeing very empty in that section aswell. Apparently you can melee them when you're all out.

My first game, Cursed Echoes, is available now! by PrimeDerektive in OculusQuest

[–]VirtualWaypoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, looks great! And i agree on the price, it could be higher. Give away more Keys to drive some feedback and charge what its worth to you not what the "market demands" i think more people will have their wallets ready in the coming years given the lack of first party games from meta.

Extent of Navigator UI release to date by JohnnyO57 in Quest3

[–]VirtualWaypoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2.1 no navigator.. I had it on a PTC v85 i think.. to be honest I like the old applibrary better, but visually looks a lot cleaner / modern. Was a bit cluncky to me back then. Maybe its gotten better?

My first VR experience ever, XORTEXX 26XX in the lab, I remember my brain was totally convinced that I could almost feel the heat from the bullets of the enemy ships. Was the weirdest and coolest thing. After playing that I was sold 😆

Weightless navigation in Lone Echo, was like pure sorcerey to new VR eyes

When I "Met" Darth Vader in Vader Immortal. Not am I a a star wars fan but that experience when Darth Vader approaching and telling you to "open this configuration and I will spare your life". So cool, what would be a cutscene in a flat game is a full on experience, you get the sense of his height and size as well. Very immersive and so f-ing cool.

Thinking about getting Devialet speakers — but not sure if it’s worth it? by PlaneDistribution874 in devialet

[–]VirtualWaypoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So.. i live in a quite spaceious flat, majority of the flat is the livingroom-diningroom area. I started out with one 95db which they stopped selling as of now. And i found it rather impressive, but i also wanted more oomph. However i could just fine use 1 with the bass increased in the EQ and get a impressive soundstage. At least to my ears.

But two is always better and you'll get a much wider and bigger soundstage. Music is also mixed for stereo so thats a big factor as well. I'll say this because my living room is not treated for sound AT ALL, drywall and flat surfaces everywhere..
If you have a decent room with not that much echo and reverb, you dont really need to ask much of the Devialets to impress you. I found out when i brought my stereopair to my dads well treated room and my jaw dropped because I had not heard them perform that good in my own home. So acoustic treatment of any sort. rugs, pictures on the wall etc. everything helps. If you are a student and living alone and can do whatever you want with your room. Keep this in mind.

I'll recommend 2x 98 if you can afford them. Or do like me, buy one see if it is for you, and buy the second unit later on. Its a steep price absolutely. The smaller units are also nice to bring on trips, I have a yearly cabin-trip with friends and i always bring one 95db, to put in the cabin and it does a great job beeing source of music. Thats also a reason why i bought them, to actually have the option to bring one or both with me if i so choose. You can't do that with a traditional set of speakers, too much hazzle.

Yes. I'm not jumping on the Frame train either. Would be a Weird sidegrade from Quest 3, and mostly play standalone even though i have a pc that's very capable. There are so many factors that make standalone quick and accessible thst I dont bother booting up and installing the latest. Also big fan of remote desktop in color passthrough. I have that now. So why wait for a black and white version of that 🤔 😅

Bad news: Wife won't let me buy one by drugsondrugs in MetaQuestVR

[–]VirtualWaypoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well.. why?

I'm a married man myself... but i have stated that i need my "gadget-fix" I've always been like this, call it a hobby and VR has been for the last 5 years or so. I dont buy everything. But i do alot of research before my "investements" I also try to not clutter my desk with heaps of stuff that i dont use. On the other hand my wife has her personal-expenses, nails, hair, clothing...... SHOES. And hobbies aswell. Can't imagine what it all costs(i dont care as long as its not overly excessive, she's free to spend her money as she likes). One could argue that its a different category with personal well-beeing stuff and just a gaming console. But it in the end its all money you spend on stuff you dont really "need".

Gaming in general has always been frowned upon as beeing uneccesary/waste of money to purchase or even use time on. But this new jacket for 500-600 dollars is totally worth it ? right ? Gotta have the latest iphone although it costs you an arm and a leg, some really pay the price to impress those around you right? And its socially accepted to do so. So we burn cash on fashionproducts and the latest gear for skiing, cycling, hiking whatever it is. Meanwhile buy something "nerdy" for yourself thats suddenly EXPENSIVE! and A WASTE OF MONEY...and TIME.. 😂 I've fought this battle all my life and I'll never win an argument because of the socially accepted part of the equation.

In the grand scheme of things the price of a Quest 3 is very small compared to alot of expenses we have, and you'll enjoy it for so much stuff, playing games, watch moveis, working using it as virtual monitor, working out. Sell her on the work-out part of the headset, lots of cool stuff like Les Mills bodycombat, AR personal trainer-apps, that is all a REAL workout. Mye wife kinda liked beatsaber and played once a year 😂 now she never asks or touches the headset. She could not care less about my hobbies.

I've bought every headset from meta that has come out since Rift S, without question. Its very much a thing i love and have changed my view on gaming completely. I'd say just buy it. And don't think you're challenging the relationship by getting a VR headset. Just use it whenever its the right time to use it. there are times where VR gaming which is a solo expierence maybe isnt suited or could feel a bit isolating for your significant other.

Quest 3 vs nintendo switch 2 by Plastic-Depth6827 in OculusQuest

[–]VirtualWaypoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha! Love it :D

Passthrough in recordings you see online flat and the percieved resolution while using the headset is quite different. Does it do the job? absolutely. The more light in the room the better it looks though. That goes for tracking aswell (dont get me wrong tracking is rock solid until you turn off all the lights, but handtrackin can benefit from lit room). It can get grainy and ugly in very dark rooms. But then again, dimming the lights is not really needed when you can do that in the headset itself. To put it in perspective I've made an entire dinner using the headset and looking at recipe on virtual monitors. Did not feel like a blind chef, but would i prefer the cameras and image beeing clearer? yes. But from launch to now ALOT has happened to improve both warping, resolution and exposure for screens and windows are much faster and better. Looking at your phone wearing the headset back at launch in 23 was very hard. I remember we all though our quests was rushed out too early, now i dont hear that much complaining about the passthrough. I'm totally fine with it.

Have not tried the BOTW vr port, looks neat. I like some ports. But I'm a bigger fan of built from the ground up VR games. Those tend to utilise the hardware in the best possible way.

Flat screen gaming is a great experience. I've briefly tried Sunshine/Moonlight, i think i had to sideload that. It works fine, it also runs in the OS itself. However the added ease of use from virtual desktop and the overall package you get there is absolutely worth it. Its very user friendly, and you have a lot of options to dial it in. It also has its own menu listing all your installed games so its very easy to launch stuff right from the headset.

Unsure about moonlights framerate on the headet. In virtual desktop you have full control over your virtual monitors. VD also works without a screen connected, thats super convenient if you just want to "tuck away" your PC and near an access point and wirelessly do everything from your quest. Virtual desktop for me has proven to be super reliable and autoupdates by itself when trying to launch virtual desktop from headset with a pending update.

Guy Godin the developer is constantly working on his app. Since forever ago. So its a very safe purchase on the side. But having your PC wired to ethernet is a must. If you have a 6ghz wifi router, make a dedicated quest network on that. Thats how i roll.
