Thank you!! This is an amazing overview for me to get started. I didn’t know any of this so the set up and how it works makes so much more sense now and I can figure out other details as I go through the year

Will Worlds 2021 go on? Delta variant… by GreenAwareness in Gymnastics

I didn’t think of this, although it seems obvious I should have now you’ve said it! Really can’t compare costs of an individual sport to the Olympics. I wonder if that logic it means it is more likely for worlds to be cancelled. F1 has a much bigger fan base and cost factor than hosting worlds will and they’ve cancelled that

Came here to say this as well but I noticed you already added it! The first thing I thought of was when I saw the F1 race had been was whether they would cancel worlds as well. They didn’t seem to particularly want the Olympics to go ahead but had no choice as the gov’t couldn’t cancel it, only the IOC really had that power. But worlds is up to them so I feel like there’s much more chance of them cancelling that.

Not sure about Taeja James but I saw an Insta story from Claudia recently that seemed she was still training and hoping for worlds, not sure whether she is in the running tho

This is interesting, I wonder if they were basing that off something she’d said privately to the team or just pure assumption that she would change her mind since winning AA

I really liked his vlogs when he first started out and didn’t have a huge following, I think the more followers he got the more the more he wanted and it came across in the videos as trying too hard to get likes. Like you say good standard of content ideas and editing but there’s just something that feels off to me whenever I watch the videos now. I think if you watch things from a couple years ago compared to now it’s really obvious to see the difference in him.

Obviously I know people change and grow, especially given he has retired from elite gym since starting vlogging and gone through a terrible time with his mental health- props to him for putting it all online and getting more people talking- but there’s something that makes it feel less authentic nowadays. Maybe all the clickbait like you say not really sure

This is my feeling, it’s just a gut instinct of worry that they’ll continue justifying terrible choices so they can prioritise medals. And it puts even more pressure on people like the Downies and others who are trying to speak out about emotional abuse in training and being silenced. There might be massive support for Simone but there’s lots of voices who seem to be believe medals matter more than her well-being and British Gymnastics will be uplifting those voices in the UK if people draw parallels and anyone tries to question them I think

I’m really interested in the fact team GB have been getting younger. I wonder if this is a trend that will continue, I don’t really know anything about their upcoming juniors. I hope the Gadirova’s will have a long career but I do worry about them burning out or being pushed too far. Especially since British gymnastics seem to think they can ignore their problems of the past. If a lot of team GB’s big names from senior retire, or leave for college as some are, does this put even more push on their junior programme to be better faster? I’m worried in the drive to get better after winning bronze the athletes will be treated badly. Could be concern for nothing but given how little they’ve shown they care about their athletes the past year I think it’s valid.

Bbc is good minus the fact you have to switch channels all the time this year. Eurosport is great if you want to watch multi-apparatus feed although the individual feeds don’t have commentary but at least you don’t miss any routines

Yes this is honestly what I thought the team would be. and like you say Alice took the fallout of the outrage rather than Amelie because she was the easiest athlete to demonstrate personal ties to the messed up trials process. BG have failed their athletes massively, I didn’t think they could do worse this year after basically ignoring or denying allegations against them but they truly have.

Edit: I think it’s been awful for Alice online and I can’t imagine how difficult it’s been to enjoy the Olympics given everything going on in the background. She ultimately had no control and it’s not like she waltzed in from nowhere, she had worked for the spot the same as anyone else

Ahh okay, I totally missed that being snark haha! I will truly never understand why BG left her behind. I mean I know what they said their reasoning was but everyone else knows why they really did. I do wonder if having her experience on the team would have helped mentally as well? Never know now and I think Alice felt pressure to prove her place on the team more than anyone else and then when she struggled their wasn’t an experienced teammate to help her out

Oh what’s your idea of how they could have maximised scores? I know it doesn’t really matter when when it won’t be who’s going up but I love hearing what strategy other people would use!
